I took my 12 year old son to a batting cage not long ago. He started out at the 60 mph to warm up. He moved to 70 mph and did fine as that's what he typically sees in travel ball. However, like all boys with maturing testicles, he wanted to move to the 85-90 mph. He couldn't touch it. At first. But the longer he stayed in there the more he adjusted and by the time we were finishing he was hitting maybe 2 out of 10 and fouling off maybe 1. And that happened in a span of 15 minutes. So the speed is relative. Relative to how often you see it.

Ubaldo was filthy in his prime. Like sharp slider at 90/91, and then a 2 seamer in the mid to high 90s that ran in on rightys. He was 3rd in Cy Young voting, Halladay won it in 2010.

Wish I had a coach like you when I was young. The way you approach the game. Breaks it down to give it a chance. You will be a great coach for a very very, long time. So refreshing to see a pro athlete says it as it is, instead of just thank his mom and saying I'm going to Disneyland. You reveal the side of pro sports that we don't see. This should be a reality show. If dancing with the Stars can do it. This would run them over. So many more sports fans than dancing fans. Just my opinion sir

As an umpire I have seen more than enough sick pitches that dart all over the plate in addition to the 100 mph. What is more sick is that wicked curve ball after that 100! Amazing hand eye coordination SUPERHUMANS.

Fasted I ever faced was a guy that could hit upper 90s my first year in college. The thing that got me was that you could actually hear the ball cutting through the air. Needless to say, fastest I had seen before that was probably mid-80's so I didn't get a hit. Was able to foul off three balls that I was way late on, then he threw me about a 80 mph curve and I looked like an idiot.

Coming form a cricketer viewing this. That pitcher you're talking about that looks slow then the ball just tees off it comes from strong fingers and wrist. A cricketer to look at that's similar is Indian bowler bumrah. If you look at his technique he comes in slow then all of a sudden with out realising the balls at you at 80-90mph where people with similar type run ups are usually spinners (i think you would think more of a break pitcher doing curve balls sliders knuckles etc) but obviously way different

In the big leagues, it seems movement on the fastball is more important than pure velocity. Rich hill had one of the best fastballs last year and it sat in the low 90s. Nathan Eovaldi has an avg fastball around 97mph, but opponents have a .290 avg against for his career and a .349 woba

Your talk here reminded me of the excellent documentary "Fastball." In that movie they explained the difference between 92 mph and 100 mph. They said, "If the two pitches were thrown together when the 100 mile-an-hour pitch reaches home plate the 92 mile-an-hour pitch would still have four and a half feet left to travel." They go on to say, "The difference between, say, a 90 mile an hour ball takes about 450 milliseconds to get to the plate and a hundred mile an hour ball takes 396 milliseconds. The 50 some odd milliseconds is crucial brain time. Fifty milliseconds is an eternity in this kind of process. If you, as a rough estimate, assume that every synaptic connection takes about two milliseconds, an extra 50 milliseconds or so gives you 25 times the number of computations so you get about 25 times the information just because you have that extra 50 milliseconds. But at 100 miles an hour you're given almost no time to make a decision. And it's getting close to that range where it's physiologically impossible to actually plan the voluntary action based off the information of the ball." ( By the way - research showed that a blink of an eye ranges from 100 to 400 milliseconds. ) Really enjoy your videos. You're a good teacher and getting better. You should revel in your gift.

Guys who can connect on a 100 mph fastball and jack it out of the park is indicative of just how exceptional they are as athletes. Damn, I can’t even keep up with the 40 mph pitches at the golf-n-stuff batting cages.

Thanks for the memories. I remember lincecum during his prime, mid to high 90s with a nasty change up. With his mechanics and delivery it seemed like guys just couldn't pickup the ball. A lot of swing and misses on his mid 80s change up. Too bad as his velocity on his FB dipped, the change became less and less effective.

I think it's more about eye dominance. I'm right handed and right eye dominant and the difference between my left and right eye is very very small but I know that's a huge difference when it comes to watching a fastball . I can bat with both hands with the right side having better body coordination and the left side having slightly better timing but if if was at your level I'd sacrifice a little bit of body coordination for a few milliseconds of better hand eye coordination.

This past weekend my team played in the Ripken tourney, and oh boy. I'm 14, and in my league, guys are usually pitching 60s to low 70s. But we faced multiple kids throwing gas, like low-to-mid 80s. Like you said, you get somewhat used to it after a couple of pitches, but let's just say that my team didn't fare very well (It actually wasn't awful, but more ABs than usual ended in SOs).

That my friends is why a hard thrower with multiple pitches and great control make millions of dollars. I've played against dudes throwing high 90's in Indie ball who couldn't locate. That's the difference sometimes. Just being able to touch corners or even pump it down the middle. In my experience most really hard throwers who couldn't make it can't find the zone. Those who can throw hard and can place their pitches will be millionaires.

It's the old cerdo I've often heard: If you can't hit a fastball, you will never make it. IN other words, any MLB player can hit a fastball and a great number can time them out no matter how hard they are. Some guys who can't hit a breaking ball, can get by as fastball hitters because most pitches in MLB are fastballs. In this respect, it's not how hard pitchers throw, but how they change speeds and get movement. A guy may throw 98, but if it's coming in straight as an arrow all the time, he's going to get hammered. You look at the speed and see 98/99 and then notice very few K's. This is a sure tip that there's no movement on his fastball. On the other hand, if you have guys like Syndergaard, who are throwing a 98 mph fastball and then a 92/93 mph slider, it can be so bad that you may as well not even go up to bat. That is an extremely hard slider that looks a lot like a fastball before it dives and breaks. Then there are guys who are throwing a 93 mph fastball, but their best off speed pitch is coming in at 85, he's going to kill you. That change up or whatever makes the fastball look like it's going 100. Finally, if you hit a 100 mph fastball, it's going to come off your bat at a much higher velocity. So, if you got a pretty good swing on it, there's a much better chance that it will go out as opposed to getting the same swing on a 91 mph fastball and having it die at the warning track. Obviously, if you hit the ball on the sweet spot with a good launch angle, the speed of the pitch isn't as important.
