Pallet home living: People have been living at the temporary shelters, called pallet homes, in Greensboro for a couple of weeks now.
They give the homeless a place to stay during the cold winter months.
Tuesday, we met one of the residents from Pomona Park. It's a temporary fix, but it's got some people feeling better about their future.
Joseph Quick is one of the first ones to stay in these pallet homes.
"I've been in and out of the homeless situation for about five years now, I've been you know in a couple of shelters like that but they're all filled up," said Quick.
He said it's been a tough few years.
"I am not doing as good as I have done in life or better or whatever, but I'm doing okay, I'm living," he said.
He said these temporary pallet homes feel like home.

@DoStuff1958You must have never been on section 8? The waiting lists are long and homes or apartments are short supply that are up to standard. Those goes apartment or houses that are up to standards first go to emergency case where children kids are involved first and individual medical conditions second. His best chance is to apply senior citizens assistants housing that also through section 8 but with longer waiting lists (deeper discount rates for older renters). That if he can afford it most we tell you it toss up: medication, rent, utilities, necessities, or foods. Yes in that order because if can’t pay utilities you out and if can’t buy necessities to keep it clean you out the program.

Used to work at a big city ER, and when its really cold, half the people coming in are homeless people at death’s door with pneumonia and dehydration. Most of them are mentally ill and just don’t have family that can deal with it anymore. The rest are people who can’t stop the drugs, or genuinely couldn’t catch a break and have no family to fall back on.

They are doing this in Denver now, too. As a society, we can afford to put people in sheds to keep them freezing. Also, mental health gets worse without sleep. Allowing people to lock a door , feel safe & fall sleep will help those with mental health issues. Also, my apt is getting hotter too, I think we will all need to have a/c soon. Look at the extra confidence that guy has knowing he can leave & come back & he will have a place to sleep.🥰

This guy seems appreciative, and the fact that he keeps his belongings neatly makes me think he is deserving of this help. I realize a lot of the homeless situation is associated with drugs, but a lot is not (one quarter of the nation's homeless are veterans) and these people need all the help they can get. Northern BC/Yukon are still horrid for the homeless in every sense, which is sad. -- Hopefully the country gets a bit better representation here soon. Sadly Northern BC suffers because the province is ran like everyone lives in dang Vancouver/Kelowna. When in fact, they do not.

I hope this catches on everywhere ..every city needs them. Shelters are getting so violent and too full, I saw a special once about a woman had to stay in one. If I were homeless I would be too afraid to stay in a shelter. These Pallet homes are a wonderful alternative.

I saw a shelter that a church offered for the homeless, years ago.Horrific! You can only sleep on chairs & not the ground because the church did not want homeless couples having sex.A shower stall flooded the entrance. No beauty in the place!Just one big dingy, ugly place.

If these become widespread, it will be just as violent. Same situation as a shelter, but entire neighborhoods of degenerates instead...

i think its also a saver place for people to use drugs i kinda don't have a problem with people on drugs i have a problem with forcing them on the street to lower the rent and house prices and then all of a sudden. we have rules and push these people away to a difrent spot to lower the rent and get people to move out. thats one of the ways people use the addicts but don't help them remember guys most of the crack that got brought into america was done by america itself.

Having not just a warm, dry, safe place to sleep but a door you can Lock has to be good for the mental health of unhoused people. To have a key to his own wee home is something I feel Mr Quick is proud of. I'm wondering if these tiny homes have a bathroom with a shower or do the residents have shared facilities a la camp grounds?

So glad for this. I've commented recently the government should build thousands of tiny homes. Something to keep the rain off and keep people from being attacked is the way to go. Hopefully an address too. Just hope lots of spare land comes available. Old wrecked destroyed homes need demolishing to make room.
