I built myself a over-10,000$ PC (Canadian $) a few years ago; Rampage V Edition 10, 6900K (OC'd 4Ghz), 128GB Corsair 3200Mhz, 1080 GTX, custom water loop (quad radiator), 960 Pro 1TB, Intel 750 1.2 TB, Barracuda 8GB, WD Black 1TB, 850 Pro, 1200W Corsair PSU (overkill but in the sweet spot for optimal consumption), a PSU, 32" 4K G-sync monitor, Core P5 built (modded), LEDs everywhere, etc... with that said, I can speak from experience -- it's a lot of money, and this kind of build sure is NOT for everyone -- however I have to say, some 3 years later, this thing still absolutely rips anything I throw at it. It's more of a workstation for me than a gaming machine, I should say -- and this is important. I think it's ridiculous to spend this much money just for games, but if you work with your computer, it makes sense. It's in no way an investment, but I think I'll still find this thing super fast for another 2-3 years before I feel like changing it. Which brings me to a simple conclusion; buying a PC is never an investment... so it comes down to, do you want to spend 10K every 5 years, or 3K every 3? Think about it, and the difference won't be that big.
@anubis18005 жыл бұрын
I've built quite a few Ryzen systems and found that the tighter the rated timings of the memory, the easier it is to OC as well as just speeding up tasks in general. In gaming I noticed about a 5% gain ( averaged across 5 games) between a 3200 CL 14 and 3200 CL 17. Unfortunately I only measured games, but the 14 CL OC took as soon as I set the XMP.

If you're not expecting more than 60hz twin 2080TIs will be more than enough. You can run 4k 60 on a similar build twin monitor with a single 2080. It won't be as good as a 2080TI and twin 2080TI with a single screen per would be even more stable, but if you're running 3 there isn't much need to run three cards unless you really just like to spend money. $10,000 PC is a moving target. I swapped jobs when I was much younger, got a large check when the first job cashed out my retirement fund. This was in 1979, A friend's dad had a first gen Apple ][ that he'd let us load up games on (using a cassette tape player), and now having money to burn decided to buy my own. Got a 2nd gen Apple ][+, starting with 32k of ram, 16k of rom, which was mostly basic (Applesoft, by B Gates), a 100k floppy drive, a 1Mhz 6502 CPU, a Suprmod to let me hook it up to a NTSC TV, and a card with the 1st gen roms on it (Woz's integer basic). Part of the manual (the Redbook, it's been recreated online if you want to see how we used to do things) was handwritten instead of typeset. Pretty sure I spent about $2200 on it, running through a cpi calculator today I get $7,300. I have no idea how much I ended up spending on upgrades, 80 column card & amber monitor (NTSC was 40 columns) which also added lower case to the keyboard, 300 baud modem replaced many times with faster version, a second disk controller card for a total of 4 floppy drives (for learning Pascal) Mockingboard sound synthesizer, another 16k ram on the motherboard and 16k more on a board, a printer card with an Espon dot matrix printer, a Z80 card with it's own 64k of memory so I could try CPM, a handbuilt, non-centering joystick for Flight Simulator (before Microsoft bought it out)(yes there was actually a version that ran on a 8 bit 1Mhz 64k computer), and probably some other things I no longer remember. You have no idea how neat it was. Nobody, I mean nobody, had a home computer at this time (except my friend's dad, who was an engineer and was writing a program for calculating different fluid flow speeds in pipes with his). Here was something that did exactly what I told it to do, and if it didn't, I could figure out why! And think of all the quarters I saved on arcade machines.

@Bamfhammer5 жыл бұрын
Overclocking a threadripper is actually relatively straightforward. The benefits, however, are not as great as overclocking an Intel chip with fewer cores. I used to run my 1950x at 4.1 GHz all cores, but unless I was running an application that used ALL of the 16 cores, the performance was worse than if I just let it auto. In auto mode, the ASUS board gets my single and dual core clocks upwards of 4.5 GHz with regularity, something I could never attain on ALL 16 cores without drinking electricity. There is some speed to be gained in applications like Premier that use all of the cores, but you can save that as a profile and switch to it if you are about to do some heavy rendering workloads. Gaming and regular workloads are better on the auto setting. The most speed can be gained overclocking the ram, as the ram speed is also the speed that the Infinity Fabric runs which speeds up access to the other cores on the chip as well as the other cache presuming you leave the cache configuration to distributed mode.

@@Ethan-rz6cx No, that why I said "How can you have built systems for so long..." Although RAID is literally self-explanatory hence the acronym. If you're saying this is drastically new, please explain how is materially different from any other basic RAID set up?

How did you put optane memory in a ryzen system? I thought it only works on a Intel build.
@noobulon43345 жыл бұрын
optane drives are really just nvme drives with intel's 3d crosspoint flash memory. The drive caching stuff is really just your run of the mill software defined read/write cache, but implimented in the uefi so its transparent to the os. You can use optane drives without the software part but the drives themselves are only 16 or 32gb for the m.2 ones so its not like you're going to be installing windows on one. For server oses however (freenas, pfsense, your choice of hypervisor, etc) 16gb is plenty and the durability and responsiveness makes it really useful.

Not to judge in any way, shape or form, but I bought my wife a brand new 2018 Skoda Fabia for as much as riptide 😅. An amazing build and I bet it’s a real experience using such a beast. I noticed one other comment saying this, but I think it would look even better in a Lian Li desk (like the one from CES). Keep up the great content. I hope you brag and tell us when the baby comes.

I know it would be an additional configuration step, but if you had Atom Editor on hand you have each document in its own "Pane" to have everything on-screen, in a single window rather than clicking through multiple windows, and create blank documents for placing CDM in. A bit tedious but also something which would make it suck less for the viewer. (Plus you can theme it.)

Paul, AMD only supports CAS latency of even numbers, so when you set it to 17 it is actually running at 18. Also your SOC voltage is a bit too high for 24/7 use. You should be able to run that kit of ram at around 1.05v. Unless it is double sided ram then 1.075 should be enough.

Jonathan Bruce the 2080ti wasn’t our yet when he made the build and since it’s a custom loop, it would be a massive pain to swap them out

I hated when it would reset configs when the PC went to sleep, but glad they fixed it and works great now. Only issue as of a few mos ago (haven't checked recently) is that my new mouse won't work in UEFI. And I also loved that mouse, the M65. It was the most comfortable mouse I had, until the middle button broke and left click button started to wear out (it would double/triple click each press of my finger). But I still have it plugged in cause it does work in the UFEI.

typically RAID 0 for high-end NVME is no good, since it actually hurts random performance, and the sequentials are so bloody high anyways. better to do RAID 1, 4 or 5 depending on needs.

I really do enjoy these chronological update style of video series, much like the solar panels and DIY bathroom videos. OMG, 9 mins though, damn :D I edit on a 6700K - Z170 system, 32GB RAM and a 1080ti, Windows is on a 256GB Samsung SM951 nVME, and working edits on a 1TB Samsung PM981 nVME (so glad I upgraded my work flow to nVME too). I really can't wait to upgrade the CPU, the 6700K gets the job done, but 4 cores are so outdated now, think I'm gonna hang on for Ryzen Zen 3 though, and get either a Ryzen 7 or 9.
