As a Black Woman I visited Seoul in 2019' before the pandemic broke out!! And I will say this I've never been treated more Better By Koreans then anything else!! I went over to celebrate my Birthday and I was treated like a Princess there!! Everyone I came in contact with was so kind to me that I never felt such Great Hospitality from any other Race!! Naturally I can't speak for everyone else but the Koreans I meet while I was there to this day we're still in contact with each other!! So I say that to say this I made so pretty cool friends over there!!Much Love Korea 🇰🇷❤🇺🇲❤

I’m fully black and was born in Seoul, South Korea and left when I was 11 months old. My mom tells me stories of how kind and loving Korean people were towards us and my babysitters were in love with me. I’ve worked for two different Korean families in America. They all treated me kindly and like family, especially when they found out Korea is my birthplace. I couldn’t help but notice the wife of my boss oddly treated me like I was beneath her, to the point my boss had to check his own wife. He even made fun of her at one point and called her a robot. It was like he was trying to make up for how she treated me. The other family I worked for were such angels and I still love them til this day. I can see the old school vs. new school dynamic. Korea will always have a place in my heart because I know there are truly some kindhearted people there.

I visited Seoul in the late 1980's with my college music department and had a positive experience. In fact, my tour guide couldn't speak English, and I couldn't speak Korean, but we had so much fun together. He presented me with flowers at the end of our concert. I was the only one who received flowers.

It would be interesting to revisit this question/topic in 2022 as it has been 5+ years and a lot has transpired between Korea and the western world concerning black people. In 2018 I visited Korea for a month and was seeking an English teacher's position and was discriminated against due to my age, so I didn't have the opportunity to learn about the racial climate.

Chinese people stopped bowing since cultural revolution and only do so now to pay respect to the dead. So if you bow to Chinese, you are essentially saying they are dead, and being superstitious, would be offended. Koreans and Japanese still bow as sign of respect or when they apologise.

All family members must kneel to knees and do the kowtow thing 3 times. Oh yes and at weddings too but that's it. Why is this question even being asked??? This isn’t important to us. We don’t need or want anyone’s acceptance or approval. This is isn’t necessary. I don’t know anyone that sits around worrying about what others think of them. Maybe the question should be reversed since they imitate our culture, music, dress, slang, etc. & then call it “pop culture” in an attempt to separate whatever they like of it from the blackness that created it. At 3:49 the woman being interviewed says something that sounds like "네" which means "yes" in Korean but the subtitles translate it as "no". I served a tour in Seoul first of all that was the best experience of my life so far, my fellow Korean soldiers or KATUSA's were vary polite and down to earth. The civilians were extremely respectful helpful and curtious. There was a default level of respect in that country that stretched from the very young to the very old. The people there approached me with curiosity at best and fetishistic at worst. I will say that as a whole they do buy into stereotypes from what they see on TV but I'm pretty sure everyone does on some level. The worse it got was my surrogate family basically thinking I would explode if the chicken I was eating wasn't fried lmao but other then that living in south Korea was the absolute best I've ever been treated in my life as a black man. Five stars would recommend. I may go back there to find a wife.👍🏿

Korean also don't have a colonial history, and their language is unique to their country. It's not widespread and it's difficult to learn. It makes assimilating to them very difficult by nature, hence why people don't go living there in the first place. The japanese have a colonial history, but it was wildly unsuccessful and many countries in Asia despise them. So the ancient colonies feel avenged in a sense. It's not like Britain who has been hated and infiltrated by many nations as a revenge for their horrific treatment in the past, and also the most popular language in the world which is relatively easy and that many people can learn. Not to mention their open mentality. This explains the difference between immigration to the West or the East.

Its a natural thing for humans to want to feel better or above something or someone else, and to feel uncomfortable with something different from you. Its not, however, okay to stay this way. As humans we have the capacity to overcome this normal reactions and check ourselves. But as I said, it will always be a thing in any society.

It’s been 4 years since this comment but after posting this comment I lived in Korea for a bit and I can say I don’t agree with my word choices from 4 years ago and I definitely feel that how black people are treated in Korea is more horrific than “interesting”. I do understand your point, but one of the key characteristics of new media is "active recievers". To get the information on specific area from new media, one should actively search the topic first. As long as the receiver is indifferent of that certain topic, main source of information is still traditional media. In that sense, traditional media still has its influence and can create stereotypes.

I wasn't going to watch this video because I'm moving to Korea in a few weeks to teach and didn't want to see anything negative, but this was a well done interview. I do wish you would've asked them more about getting their perceptions about a whole race of people from media (similar to your Korean drama vs real korea interview). I also don't understand the Big Black Bro/Sis thing. Would it be ok if I called them "my little yellow bro/sis" no matter their age and status? It seems like I would be calling them inferior to me/talking down to them...EDIT: what I'm trying to say is if flipping the language seems inappropriate, then it probably isn't the best language to use for everyone involved . Black people don't want to be put on pedestals or be given titles for no reason. We just want to be treated like individual human beings that have different experiences, that you would learn about if you talk to us. Again great job, and thanks for the interview.

sugarwaters Well the situation we use the term "Heuk Hyeong (Big(=older) black bro)" or "Heuk Nuna(big(=older) black sis)" is when we admire or envy black people's superiority especially on music and sports. As we use "Hyeong" for close older male friends and "Nuna" for close older female friends, "Heuk Hyeong(Big black bro)" and "Heuk Nuna(Big black sis)" are, in a way, the way of showing their familiarity and closeness towards black people. But I do understand those can be discriminatory, by categorizing certain groups of people with their skin color(because "Heuk" means black). This insensibility on racial discrimination in Korea comes from ingnorance because Korea is extremely homogeneous society. BUT, believe me. As the interviewees in this video, Koreans are getting sensible on racial discrimination issue and willing to embrace foreigners to their society. Okyere Samuel, the guy who shared his discriminated experience at the beginning, was an international student from Ghana, and now he is one of the beloved celebrities in Korea.

When I lived in China (vastly different country, I know, but bear with me) people called each other "brother" or "sister" regardless of how related they were; especially in regards to children; I suspect that other asian countries may have a similar culture of familiarity in name-calling (if I'm wrong do tell me, I'm curious to know). But, based on what I know, calling someone a familial name is rather widely accepted; though shouting it at a random stranger would be considered odd if it were between two Chinese strangers. Again, not sure how that translates to Korean culture, but when I heard it in the interview, I was not surprised at all.

As an Asian myself, It's pretty scary how black people don't understand asian culture at all yet they accuse us for not accepting blacks into their community. There is nothing wrong about wanting to be within your own community of color where you speak the same language and share the same culture bc it is everyone's right to choose who they want to be around. I have had a experience where my father was shot and killed by a black male at his store even after he gave him all the money in the cash register. I understand that there are bad people in every race, but I don't understand why my dad, along with many other asian businesses in my community have always been targeted mostly by black americans. I also have a dear friend who is asian, and she has been raped by a black male one night while walking back to her apartment in Atlanta many years ago. I cry at night sometimes bc I know she is not okay and she will never be the same, and there is nothing I can do to help her to undo what happened that horrible night. These personal experiences of mine with black americans since childhood are not stereotypes but actual events that happened and is still happening in asian communities all around the US but I don't understand why nobody talks about this. It's culture that shapes people's behaviors, and when it comes to black culture they praise this ideology that being a gangster is somehow cool. I've lived in black neighbor hoods and a lot of the people I've tried to interact with seemed as if they had no conscience at all, which shocked me. You can't judge an entire race but you can judge a majority of a race by their culture and values. For example, Asian culture encourages people to get a higher education to live a better life and it's not a stereotype that many of us have achieved a higher income status through hard work. It's irresponsible and dangerous for society to always succumb and allow blacks to have such a powerful platform whenever they claim to be the victim whether on social media, movies, and television shows bc the misguided ideology of the black spokesperson will prey and brainwash on the naive young minds of asian women or any women who have absolutely no idea how dangerous and violent black communities really are.

Our first meeting I brought her flowers, we spoke about my family history, which includes having a Chinese grandmother who ran a women's college, everyone in my family went to university and had a good career in the fields of math and science. Good family background, educated, a good job. I make a point to get her gifts whenever I see something nice and I'm out with my boyfriend. And still she'll like call my boyfriend is she knows he's out with me and make up a crisis. I love my skin colour, it's the same as my mother's and I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world. Race is a concept that has gotten too out of hand, culture is more my interest. I mentioned it because this video is about one cultures perspective on another's, so I thought to share my own experiences. Sheeba true. I was in Korea for 2 years back in 03-05 and I experienced little to no racism. The US is far more racist. I’d say what I experienced was more curiosity and unfamiliarity as I traveled to many places not used to foreigners; ie the real Korea and no much Seoul which is foreigner heavy. I think a lot of people are misinterpreting this video. They were asked to list stereotypes, so they stated what the stereotypes were. They didn't say they believed those stereotypes. It seems like quite a few of them acknowledge the discrimination black people face within their own country. They never said that they believed that the discrimination was justified. It's kind of weird how many people misunderstood the video.

There was a pretty good blog by a black guy and his experiences teaching in Korea. That was a few years back, though. He definitely recounted some instances of discrimination. I live in Zhengzhou, China, and there's not a lot of foreigners here (esp. with Covid), so I stand out. And when I lived in Korea I stood out (I'm a white guy). If you don't live in Seoul they might not see a lot of foreigners. I remember coming out of Lotteria in Ochan (small town) and a little girl pointed at me and shouted "wayguk saram!", as if I was a unicorn. I say "Yep, wayguk saram here. Have a nice evening."

I'm Hispanic, and not from the USA,(immigrant, at age 5) and I know it's not abt black ppl, but just in the racist concept, there's this Chinese girl in my class, and While I was walking to my class, she said "Hey! Hey! Hey Mexican girl! " and she was calling for me like that, and It's very rude that literally every classmate of mine(except the ones that are close to me) think I'm Mexican, ppl should be more aware that not everyone that is Hispanic is Mexican, and I literally say it a ton, I'm proud of that, I'm Salvadorian and ppl should ask before u even try to insult me and speak bad abt Mexico, bc Honestly that insult isn't toward me bc I'm not Mexican, but ppl should be more aware👁👁, and it was rude cuz I never called her a Korean, or Japanese, kr Taiwanese, I asked her where she was from before making assumptions that every Asian person is just Korean, and I call her Chinese while she calls me Mexican, if u don't see the problem, wtf🧍🏼‍♂️

I think the problem is the Korean system. People are too busy focusing on the maths/english/sciences than educating the Korean people with their Geography and Politics and history. Black people are more than just sport players and musicians, you need to study the history of them to understand why black people (specially in America) are predominantly in the music/sport industry. You have to learn and understand the effects of slavery & Jim Crow & post-slavery America. Black people were limited (are still limited today) with the things they were able to do. So its really ignorant to base a whole race off of what you see in the media. What kind of person would i be if i judged Koreans based on kpop-idols & the fact that Korea is most known for it's high rates of plastic surgery? What if i thought South Korea and North Korea were the same & treated their people the same. You see i too was never taught in school about Asia in general, let alone Korea, but for people to base things off of media is really horrible. Another thing to understand is you can't just say "Africa", there are 54 countries, be more specific when talking about African people. Another thing is, African-Americans don't represent all of Africans.. again there are 54 countries. People need to understand Africa isn't a unprivileged continent because the people are dumb or poor, you need to learn its history to understand why it is the way it is. Every country in Africa was colonised (except Ethiopia & Liberia) by predominantly white Europeans, so in order to judge a whole continent and its people you need to understand the effects of post-colonisation. Learn about the drug war, because black people didn't just "get into drug dealing", drugs were put in black neighbourhood by white Americans to segregate and deteriorate black people in America. Another thing that really bothers me is the fact black are known, and this is a historically proven fact, the most discriminated against & most killed race in all of history, so for people to assume that black people are the "dangerous" ones is gross. I highly recommend that Koreans and everyone as a matter of fact to educate themselves instead of judging a whole race based on American media. Nevertheless i think social interviews like this are important because it makes us realise that theres a problem in our societies & the education systems really needs to step up, to make these kind of opinions about the black race change. Also more and more people need to step in when they see racism taken place.
