I'd like to believe the Panthers don't have a 2024 Cup in the bag but given how badly the Oilers have played their past 2 games, that series almost feels that way to me. Sure the Leafs started their 1993 opening-round playoff series (Norris Division semifinal against the Wings) on the road and went down 2-0 but came back to win that series in 7 games. The Raptors weren't so lucky after having, during a 2022 1st-round NBA playoff series, gone down similarly to the 76ers over at Philly's Wells Fargo Center, losing that series in 6 games. I see the Oilers as at best more likely to see a similar fate to how the Sixers beat the Raptors in 2022 over how the Leafs beat the Wings in 1993.

You're actually wrong. They have not only relied totally on their PP, they have also relied on their PK and their 5 on 5 play. Their issue is the defensive pairing of Nurse and Ceci, inconsistent goaltending and team play, and trying to score highlight goals.

They are actually a good team, lacking experience in the finals. That and Florida is a very good defensive team with a hot goalie. I'm going to publicly state I was semi wrong about Stuart Skinner. The two goals he gave up weren't the best but he's not the issue here. It may be the NHL Player Safety Department (NHLPSD) suspends both Draisaitl AND winger Warren Foegele for at least a game. Yet unlike Draisaitl, Foegele was tossed, so if the NHLPSD suspends only 1 of them, I see Foegele, who was tossed, more likely than Draisaitl to be suspended. That's although I didn't like the elbow Drai put on Barkov or the knee Foegele used to try to injure Luostarinen. Skinner has helped propel the Oilers to their 1st post-decade-of-darkness Cup appearance but this Oiler defence has so many holes that in the 2nd game of that Cup final they allowed, BEFORE factoring in the Ekblad empty-netter, 3 goals. In game 1 the Oilers allowed 2 non-empty-net goals. The Habs during their 2021 stint in an all-Canadian division (better known as the North Division) made it, like this postseason the Oilers did, to a Cup final but scored TWO, not ONE, goals over their 1st 2 games. That said, the Habs fell behind 2-0 in that series to Andrei Vasilevskiy and the Bolts, with 5-1 and 3-1 respective losses of games 1 and 2 at Amalie Arena. Games 3 and 4 would take place at Montreal's Bell Centre but even there the Habs struggled, losing the 3rd game 6-3 but winning the 4th (3-2) in OT. Game 5 was, unlike the 1st 3 but like the 4th, close, with the Bolts' having come away with a 1-0 regulation win. It's quite possible this Cup final will feature the Panthers as the 1st post-1990s team to sweep such a series, with the last such sweep of a Cup final having come from the Wings in 1998 at the Capitals' expense.

From what I saw, every time the Oil got the puck deep there was 2 panthers and 1 oiler digging for it. There was also 2 panthers hanging around the oiler most likely to get the pass out. Also there was generally no defense joining the rush, they were going for the long breakout pass and not hoining the rush.. If there was a fight for the puck in the panther's zone near the blue line, both defense were backing off to the red line. All to defend shaky Skinner and reduce shots. To fix this the defense needs to go into offense mode at every opportunity and go back to what worked all season. Try to win 5-4 instead of 2-1. Desperate times call for a change.

Lots of reasons. Florida outplayed them,. penalties are suspect. Oilers get 5 minute kneeing penalty, Bennett does same thing to Bouchard and gets 2. Oilers on power play and Florida puts puck over glass. No penalty. McDavid gets breakaway, gets hooked, stick between legs, no call. Then bad penalties by Edmonton last 4 minutes.
