I used to think an 85mm fast prime was a great lens for b cam side angles in interviews, but my opinion changed when I realized the 2.8 70-200 is better for interviews because having half of their heads blurred doesn’t look “professional” in my opinion. Plus it’s much easier to pull focus on cause I don’t use CAF. However if you shoot weddings and events, I think it’s still a great lens for your kit for b roll

btw, the newish sony a6600 ( $1200 used body only) camera has no time limit on videos and 90 percent of the features, & similiar images of the full frame A7r3 camera except the a6600 is cropped APS-C slightly smaller censor and its lenses are way smaller and cheaper than full frame counterparts used by the A7R3 ($1800 used body only). of couse, long term full frame is more useful than APS-C but at dimishing returns for extra dollars spent.

I just bought an a7iii and the first lens I bought for it was the 85mm f/1.8. I shoot wedding films, and I find myself hanging out on 85mm most of the time, so that I don't have to get right up in people's faces while filming them, because then they feel awkward and it shows. I just bought the 85mm on your reccomendation from the old video and then I watch this one. So now I do not trust a word you say haha. I've used it on one shoot and it was definitely tight than I was used to. I was shooting an event though so it was nice to not need to get too up in people's faces to get good close shots of them. Also being further away enabled me to find more opportunities for using fore ground in shots which looked good. I like it a lot, I'm just sad that you don't. I can see for b roll its not ideal because it's so tight and minimum focusing am distance of 80cm. I'm so torn between the 16-35 and the tamron. I know the tamron will look nice but it has no OSS.
@PeterLindgren15 жыл бұрын
Haha sorry, but you develop new habits and change opinions during the year right? I do like the 85mm though but it is a little limited for the content i produce nowadays. Loving your great work Peter. I’m just planning into learning how to make music videos so I’m really struck what lenses to go for and I like your 3 best lenses but I assume they are based on your preference for full frame camera body? I have a canon 90D (crop sensor) and at the moment I’m not planning to upgrade to a full frame so I’m wondering or doubt those 3 of your best lenses may not perform equally well on a crop body so I’m looking forward for a little bit more help in choosing the right focal length I may need. I was also wondering if Tokina 11-20 mm 2.8 on a crop body would be similar to 16-35 in regards to focal length? NB: I do have canon 24-70mm II, canon 50mm 1.8, Tamron 10-24mm 3.5-4.5. Thanks a lot, really appreciate how your work is helping thousands of video makers.

So the lenses I use. For me, being wide. Samyang 18mm F2.8. Small pancake lens. For me, when I'm shooting wide. Many times it is on the gimbal. So it is nice it is small, and pretty fast. 85mm 1.8. Actually i don't have any issues getting stable footage as the a7iii has IBIS. Also, I feel like 85mm is better than 50mm because when you are shooting with that, you really want to get detail shots. A hand shot, face shot. etc etc. For me, 50mm isn't really wide enough for a good establishing shot. But not close enough to get good detail shots. It is all I really need.
@Nvrr04 жыл бұрын
PrimeInChina I disagree, I like the 50mm for close ups, not as good as 85 but close enough. I use the sigma 18-35 on bmpcc4k for video and it gives me around 24mm-48mm or 35mm-70mm with no speed booster and the closeups around 50look good. I use to only shoot photos and use to only use the 85 because of the compression but found it too tight in certain locations. It produces a really nice image but the 50mm can produce similar results. For photos I’ll take the 85overall for its image over the 50 but for video the 50is nice Check out at 33seconds in this video, it’s the sigma at 50mm. It’s pretty nice. I get some good close ups shots especially since the sigmas focus distance is short and allows for some great detail shots. kzbin.info/www/bejne/h4i7haKpeKt7has At 33seconds the closeups is sigma at 50mm
@PrimeInChina4 жыл бұрын
@@Nvrr0 Yeah, and with all due respect, it is the worst shot in that entire video. It is the only one that doesn't fit. Because look at the shot. You are making her face/head look really fat. She is framed on the right, and what is on the open space? A building or something? Because of the focal length x distance you filmed her at, her head/face looks larger than the building. You never want to make a beautiful woman look larger than a building. So to fix this, you could have isolated her more, with more DOF/used a longer focal distance. In the rest of the video, you are shooting her wide. She looks beautiful, small.. petite. You show her features very well. Notice at 1:05, what focal length did you use? This is a much better shoulders up shot. She's framed on the right, but not all the way to the right. Because of the DOF, the open space is MUCH less distracting. Same for 1:08. Again, framed better, because of the DOF, it is MUCH less distracting. That is why you film people a certain way with certain focal lengths. 35, is usually torso and up. 50 is shoulders and up. 85 is of course facial features/body details. The reason I choose 85 over 50, is because sometimes (especially for people) a 50 MM is not very flattering with the area around a subject. With an 85MM it is easy to fill the frame, and show off the subjects features, while 100% blowing out the background. If you shoot wide, you can also make people look thin and small. Great video though. I watched it all and liked it. I also use that same lens on one of my cameras.

Oh man, your videos are always so perfect on time! Could you help me with choosing the lens? I’m just choosing my first camera for travelling/vlogging/documentary type of videos, (I will be travelling South America and filming indigenous tribes), I picked a6500 for that and I can’t choose the lens. My favourite is sigma 16mm 1.4. I’d really like to have low light lens and have a nice bokeh.. But I’m afraid that it won’t cover the whole focal length I need plus it’s not stabilised, and I want to do a lot of handheld footage.. Is ibis enough in this case? .. I can use the internal zoom in camera but that compromises the quality.. What other lens would you recommend? Sony 18-105mm f4 - I’m afraid of bad bokeh effect here. Or is there better camera + lens combo that I’m not aware of? I really appreciate the size of a6500 + ibis, af.. Sorry for such a long message haha.

try using the super 35 mode so you can experience a different focal length without having a diff lens thrs no much quality diffrence talking abt ibis its great even if u dont hav a ISS lens you can use that sigma kens no prb and if you want kn better version of the a6500 its the a6600 a bit expensive but worth the price and 50 mm focal length would be great one to incest in and will help you better ur skills hope yhis hav helped i am a former a6500 user and i just shared my experience thank u for taking time to read this!! ✌🏼✌🏼👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼

MR MAC thanks for the answer! I will look into super 35. A6600 looks very sweet, but it’s way off my budget. I’m buying a6500 new for 880$, A6600 costs 1400$ 😀 So is there any other particular lens you would recommend me to invest in? And do you think 16mm will be good go to lens for everything?
@PeterLindgren15 жыл бұрын
The a6600 is gonna be better than the A6500 but both cameras are still solid buys. As for the APSC lenses, i do think the sigma 16mm 1.4 is insanely good and you'd be good to use that for a lot of things. The only downside is that you won't have any range in it. But i'd say go for that and then try to see if you can find a used APSC zoom lens!

Hey man. Cool video and informative as always! I have the same setup of a7iii + tamron 28-75mm f2.8. Recently I just made a B ROLL for fun at home and I found that I have trouble to get object to stay in focus, ecspecially during fast movement. Do you have any tips for this? (I shot with auto focus)

Hi Peter, thanks for the gorgeous video all the way :) I’m having difficulty of swapping prime lenses for travel video on a gimbal. Do you have any idea how I can do it efficient and effectively? Thank you ☺️
