My parents have a African grey. They have had her since I was a a small kid im 30 now. So I think that makes her about 25. Funniest thing she will call the dog and tell it to sit and lay down ask it if it wants treats. So funny.

I used to work at a machine shop and the office manager lady owned an African Gray that she would bring to the shop every day. He would perfectly imitate the phone beeps, her speaking phrases, her coughing. A few times I would have a conversation with the office manager from outside the door only to look inside and find out that I was talking with the bird and she had stepped out...

My Grey had what i call pressure control. It always amazed me. She wld just put mild pressure to tell me NO. She only truly bit me if spooked or territorial. After she strike me w a true bite, she wld immediately apologize to me. She NEVER meant to bite me to hurt me. I loved that about her.

Very informational video! I own an African Grey and have had him for 8 years now. I get many questions about what they should know if they are considering getting a parrot and I can't stress to them enough how important it is that they find the right bird that would fit with their personality and not just because they want to cuddle with them. Running and dripping water... that's a nice sound the CAG makes here. And Hello! What we have learned here is that if a noise gets attention, the African grey learns that noise fast... Soooo, pizza timer? yeah, 20 seconds worth of beeps and human comes running for the pizza. Now we have pizza timer sounds all the time. In the morning we are reminded to turn off the burglar alarm with the disarm sounds. In the evening we are reminded to arm the alarm with the arming sounds. Pull a kleenex, get the nose blowing sound. Bring in a tool box, get the electric drill sound. And, as you notice... ignore the bird, get ALL the sounds :)

OMG....FINALLY ! I am soooo impressed with you and what you said about what it is like living with an African Grey ! You are really smart and nailed it. After all this time and all the other videos I have watched for years and years from African Grey owners, you are the only one who told it EXACTLY like it is ! I won't be specific and name names..... BUT there is a guy on you tube who has lots and lots of videos of his Grey and I believe it is the first and only one he has owned and honestly I can tell you since this is the 5th Grey I have owned over the years, that this guy got VERY LUCKY to have a super bird. So this guy asks like he is some expert since his bird is so wonderful. Well I'm here to tell you he just got very lucky with his! Most are not as perfect as his parrot is. Everything you said was very good and very true about living with an African Grey and I applaud you for telling it like it is. Anyone considering getting one should really watch this video so they know. Now, how about a video showing of all the not so great times so people really get it.! I haven't taken a video and posted it of any of my Greys but I think I finally am about to. I will keep you posted. Thanks again.

When my 26 year old Gray would not eat for 2 days I took him to a my vet who referred me to a Bird vet in Los Angeles 60 miles away saying she was the best bird vet in California. X-rays showed up several pieces of plastic in his digest track and one large one that got stuck in his proventriccules . . Three days of in patient care with antibiotics and a thousand dollars he was OK So I keep ALL plastic away from him because he can crush almost anything made of plastic. I say this because you video shows you giving your gray a cap off a pen. He could very easily chew off the stem of it and eat it real quick.

As a bird family, we do not believe in starter birds. Birds live very long lives and really regress when moving from home to home. Even the smallest lower maintenance breeds deserve forever homes. We've adopted from homes that have accumulated over 12 birds and I really suggest a person take the time and dedication to really study birds, visit with bird communities and prepare for the right breed for you. That being said, CAGs are the best so just get a Grey! 😜

I just had a similar situation yesterday, but it was a green wing macaw. Fully grown, stuck in a cage. Supposedly he was already sold (sign on the cage said it), but he looked so so sad sitting in a cage that was way too small for him (I hope whoever he was sold to has a much bigger enclosure for him). My fiancé knows nothing about birds and he even could tell the poor thing was depressed. Everyone was fawning over the young birds they had. Like he might be sold already but the employees at the very least could’ve given him attention at the very least instead of caging him and shoving him in a corner until he’s picked up.

Excellent commentary on African Greys. I've had one for a few months, also a Congo. Mine doesn't go on my head. He does sometimes cuddle into my cheek. I will add that they are strong willed and have minds of their own. Never force yourself on one. If he doesn't want to step up, he gets his way. I have never been bitten by him and I don't intend to start by breaking the bond we have and are still working on. They will repeat some words or phrases only after hearing them three or four times. Truly amazing and extremely intelligent and captivating birds.

Wish this channel was around when my mother had her parrot years ago...long story short she got a parrot that was black n red (warning sign) this parrot was really quiet. Was listed as a parrot in the African grey family. The store wasn't feeding him correctly which is why he was quiet n calm. It ended up being a parrot that should have never been a pet or sold as a pet. It was a Violet Necked lory. Their diet is almost all sugar and nectar which makes very hyper birds and they are very violent naturally. Also extremely smart. Had him for many years after helping her learn to care for him. Love how you warn ppl on how these birds really are cuz not many ppl know. Love your work with them! Best wishes to you guys!

That’s so interesting that you mention about convincing the bird you mean no harm and they can maybe warm up to you. My dads friend had a African Grey, she has sense been rehomed to someone who is more experienced. But when he had her I always felt bad for her because she seemed like she wanted to deeply connect with someone but just didn’t have the ability to do so. I would walk up to her cage, my dad’s friend would warn, “ careful, she bites,” but she would tip her down and allow me to scratch the top of her head. She would eventually have enough and do a mock bite. But then would again put her head down and ask for more pets. We would go over often, I would repeat this with her, and the look in her eyes was of curiosity ; and trying to understand. The wanting to connect was there, and she wasn’t mean. She just needed someone who didn’t treat her like a lamp that poops. She’s a living thing and they need time to gain their trust it just doesn’t happen over night. I’m happy she is in a WAY better home and free roaming 😊👏🏼. I hope Cindy ( that was her name🐦) is doing well, last I heard she is still alive and well, I always had a soft spot for that gorgeous bird 🐦💜.

*Did you know?.. There are over 30 million birds in shelters & rescues, just in the U.S. alone.* Africa Grey make up a good percentage of birds needing homes. Please do your research for 6-12 months prior to you making the life changing commitment of getting a bird. If you still want a bird, Google a rescue or avian shelter. Go volunteer for a few weeks & see how you feel. A bird would surely choose you. Experience the work they take, the proper diet, the ear piercing screams that will make you run into the wall & your ears will ring for hours, until you eventually go deaf. Ear plugs recommended. If you can do all of it, the research, volunteer for atleast 3 weeks, completely bird proof your home, manage the loud screams, let your bird out of cage 10-14 hours a day, spending time with them all day, the process of taming & bonding with your bird. The lost goes on & on. I just want people to know what it really takes & to have people *(ADOPT, DON'T SHOP!)* LET'S PUT BREEDERS OUT OF BUSINESS & EMPTY OUR SHELTERS & AVIAN RESCUES! We need to turn this around, before it is too late! Be the voice for birds!

you are so right ! 100% true. We changed the battery in a fire alarm cause it was beeping . That whole night I was freaking out ... that beep kept up every 10 minutes ...after fixing it. Max was so exact to the sound and intensity and duration ! Even about being one person Birds , or feelings hurt. My son was always Max's favorit . When he came back from basic training and said Hi Max..Head scratch ? Max just got up on his perch and turned his back to my son ! I think it would be fun to teach him some French Phrases ( yes , French , not curse words)! He only cursed once , after I played music too loudly ....he said every cuss word I've ever heard ! But 14 years later ...not once again.

super intuitive. I used to watch funny shows all the time and my Gray would laugh before the punchline.

Our grey did the crunching of tortilla/potato chips uncannily. Cracked us up EVERY time. And even made hybrid sounds of multiple things happening at the same time. Amazing birds. Very loud though.

My bird does the sound of me swallowing...it was one of the first things he did. I lifted a drink to my lips and heard ME swallow before I did. Hahhahaha

My African Grey cld talk and did talk occasionally, but was mostly silent. She was not a screamer either. If she made a paniced. sound i needed to invertigate. She wld bark before the dog if someone approached the door, she always rang out a phone call before the phone wld even ring. That was always trippie for me. I loved her water sounds and as i hv watched videos of other greys, they all make the same sounds for water. That is also amazing and tells me a bit about the Grey species and their mentality as a species.

i decided recently that i want to buy an african grey when i move out and im really glad you touched on winning the bird over, that's really important. honestly the more research i do and the more videos i watch, the more in love i am with them. we used to have birds a long time ago, but once my brother was born and we found out the dander was making his asthma act up, we had to send them away. it was heartbreaking. but i'm really ready to have another screaming, flying child in my life.

My dad got an African grey and ended up giving it to my grandmother. It took almost 10 years to get her to warm up to our big family. When my day finally came, she came up to me and put her head down and my grandmother told me to say "head scratch" after she found out nobody was ever going to hurt her she opened up. Pretty sure the pet store my dad got her from was very bad to her. Dont blame her at all I'm just happy she finally warmed up to us. We have our own whistle when I arrive and leave my grandmother's house. It's like a hello and goodbye.

I've always wanted an African Grey. I have grown up with Parakeets and Cockatiels, and I have often been called the Bird Whisperer by friends lol. I am confident in my intuition and love of these animals but I know Parrots are a bit more complex. Of course my main concern is the bird's happiness, and I want to make sure that the bird and I are a good fit for each other. I am gone most of the day though. Is that something that will put a lot of stress on a Grey?? Will they be happy with the time I spend with them in the morning, after work and on the weekends? If that is something that is detrimental to the happiness of a Grey...what kind of parrot would you suggest?

My amazon is exactly like that haha. He follows me around the house every second of the day.

What bird would you recommend to me that is medium size e.g. African grey, conures etc around that range of size. It will have to be a bird that is playful and isn’t that loud.

Considering the routine. How strict is this before they pluck? I mean as in exeptions. Eg: I go out and stay out about once a month. Would the bird be fine? If I go on a holiday and my bird visits my parents for 2 weeks and then comes back. Would those stressors be enough to begin plucking?
