Just want to point out that having cellulite does not mean you're fat (I'm 5'8'' 120 and I had cellulite even when I was the same height and 8 lbs lighter). It's just less dense fat and you get it by gaining weight quickly or losing weight quickly. It also has something to do with thinner skin

I looked like I'd been refrigerated my lips were purple my skin was dull my hair fell out and my period stopped. I did this because I'd always been naturally chubbier than other girls my age, but the amount of damage my body suffered was never worth it. Bodybuilding competitions are not beauty contests…they are bodybuilding contests…which boils down to muscle development and conditioning. Basically, it’s whoever looks most like an anatomy chart. Bodybuilding (all categories) is not about health…it’s about pushing the limits of what you think is possible.
@nightmarewolf1710
@nightmarewolf1710 9 ай бұрын
Coach Greg never said, that they are about health, the only reason he mentions health, is, because his audience isn't 95% professional bodybuilders, and saying "You should look like an anatomy chart" or at the very least not mentioning the consequences of these decisions, would be questionable and a bad influence. Greg supports and helps bodybuilders (Urs Kalecinski for example) but it has to be said: It's not healthy.

The unfortunate part about all of this is that the standards for bodybuilding for women mimic those of men, and that the judges want a V shape. Which is really not fair to women because women’s bodies are not V-shaped. This is why Shanique Grant left after winning 2 Olympia‘s in physique because she wasn’t willing to increase the amount of steroids. They wanted the women to take to get that ultra shredded look. And let’s not kid ourselves about the bikini competitors. They are absolutely on gear because it’s the only way they can gain muscle and starve themselves at the same time. And they also take fat burning substances that literally say “not for human consumption” on the can.

I'm a woman in my early 40s and have always hovered around 23% body fat (5'5" 133lbs 35-28-42), walking a lot but rarely having any motivation to diet or work out. The fitness literature I read in the 90s and early 2000s made it sound like anything over 15% for either sex was unacceptable and 5-10% was ideal, so for two decades I've honestly thought 23% was super unhealthy and quadruple the ideal, that I was basically a walking sack of goo. Not sure how this video ended up in my recommended as I don't watch fitness content, but I've never heard anyone say 20-25% is lean for a woman. What on earth. Apparently my whole life is a lie 😂

@snickerdoodle4067 well, I'm no longer underweight but I'm still often described as "thin" by friends and family, and even strangers. These days, I work out for 2 hours per day and my mind is still consumed by being as lean as possible. At one point, I had amenorrhea. I no longer have that, but my menstrual cycles only last 2 days per month, instead of the average 7. Low body fat looks quite different on a person with very little muscle than it does on a person with significant muscle development. I had to work hard over the years to build my muscle tissue back up. I know that Coach Greg, and many other fitness and nutrition professionals, state that women should carry 20-25 percent body fat for optimal health. But my mind is just psychologically wired to find lower body fat levels more attractive. I also believe that the majority of people, whether they are male or female, think leaner is better. Right now, I would guess that I'm around 22 percent. Whoever assigned the body fat percentage numbers to the visual representations in the chart (at the beginning of the video) underestimated the women's body fatness by a considerable degree. The "12 percent" body fat woman is probably closer to 14-16 percent. The "15 percent" body fat woman is closer to 20-22 percent, perhaps even 23 percent. And the women who supposedly have 20 percent and 25 percent are closer to 25-26 percent and 27-30 percent, respectively.

Thanks for the info Coach! It's definitely true that it's hard to judge bf% just by sight because it does depend on the body shape, skeletal structure and height. I've always been told that I look taller than I really am, and comparing to the bf% example photos, I look slightly leaner than the 25% bf (while in maintenance I usually have a 2 pack and not that much love handles) even though my bf% is around 25-26%. I think that's because of my proportions. On the other side though I have a naturally less curvy body structure with wide obliques (and my body fat likes to accumulate in my belly and it's the last to go), so getting lean enough for a six pack AND at the same time keeping big glutes is very difficult for me. If I want the big glutes look I'll have to sacrifice my abs, and vice versa. And I'm sure it's the same way for many women like me. I still have aesthetic goals of course (getting a bit leaner and building more muscle on the glutes), but it is definitely worth reminding that the hourglass figure a lot of fitness influencers and bikini competitors have may be achieved synthetically through clothes (butt pads), surgery or PEDs, and that helps me be more realistic as to what I should aim for.

Now I’m back at my ‘happy weight’, a weight that’s relatively easy for me to maintain and function at which fluctuates been 71-74kg (BMI 24.5 - 25.6, Body fat % = 22.8% - 24.5%). My waist circumference sits between 26 - 28 inches ALWAYS. My hips are 42” wide, i carry most of my fat around my hips glutes and thighs. I’m 170cm tall (5’7) for more context. So when I did gain a lot of weight 2 years ago I understand why my family couldn’t really see it because I don’t gain much fat in my stomach area anyway. My mum did told me I was ‘eating well’ because my ass was getting fatter💀. Still - that’s more of a cultural african thing to be ‘happy/ encourage’ a thicker figure rather than her telling me to loose the weight. If I have had a bigger belly I know her response to my weight gain woulda been more negative😅

There's nothing wrong with you. This guy is running on very narrow, old, outdated, fallacies and opinions. He even uses "cellulite" as a measure of health. It's not, cellulite is caused by a combination of skin _and_ fat condition and skinny or fit people can get it, as well as "fat" people having little or none. Even trying to use body fat %, without really, properly acknowledging there is a difference between visceral and subcutaneous fat, is a poor measure of "health". Then there was absolutely zero acknowledgement that I heard, of the fact that all of the sources he is using have been acknowledged as flawed because the data has historically only ever been sourced almost exclusively from very limited groups of white people and it doesn't represent ethnic or genetic variation. Science and statistics show being an active "overweight" person (within reason, there definitely is a point where too much fat is plain old harmful) is linked to better health outcomes and even longer life expectancy than being under, or "normal" weight, and inactive. Estrogen makes women pudgier and a little extra pudge, can be a sign of health and for thousands of years, that extra pudge was the difference between carrying a baby to or near term, or not. It's really not that bizarre that many (and I mean many, whether they have the guts to admit it or not) men are attracted to softer female bodies.

The best way to recover postpartum is truly to stay active and watch weight gain during pregnancy. Currently pregnant with my fifth, and I’ve snapped right back into shape each time, thanks to weightlifting and keeping the diet in check. And I’m so much happier-there is nothing more taxing on emotional health than feeling defeated, exhausted, and overwhelmed with your poor Haworth postpartum. Too many women aren’t told that the best way to feel good after a baby is to take good care of your health and fitness. You’re already sleeping terribly and dealing with hormonal misery, and probably breastfeeding. Do yourself a favor and try to stay in the best shape you can, it’ll pay off a thousand fold

This is a struggle not only for female bodybuilders but for runners as well. I always was so lean even before running. Five years ago I had to move and a lot of life changes. I had surgery that set me back and I’m about to turn 50 which seriously impacts hormones etc. I never saw it coming. I’m still very fit but shifts in my body have taken place and it’s a major mind game when you see yourself a little “softer and fuller” Now I truthfully was waaaaaay too lean ….. heavy runner carrying about 9-10% bf. So when I went up to 13- even though it’s super lean the eyes can’t keep up …….. this is what Greg is talking about. You can be in great shape and have body dysmorphia and not see what’s happening. It’s not worth it. I am slowly gaining the weight I need to be healthy but as you get older it’s harder because I have been in this for so long. I don’t think body building is really healthy for women and I now see the impact fitness and running has had on my mindset. BDD, eating disorders, and mental health can all be a part of it if you’re not careful.

There is such a huge variety of how women store their bodyfat - much more than men i think. And some have it better than others. Some women are lucky to store almost all of their bodyfat in their lower body. The upper body is mostly lean, and push up jeans or compression leggings can morph that fat into a very attractive shape, and hide the cellulite. Others have a beer belly like men. Yet others need to have breast reduction surgery because they´re so big that it´s painful. I even have an aunt who has tiny little legs, a small butt, but her back, lats and neck are fat, so in clothes she looks like a jacked bodybuilder.

Any woman between 20-25% is fine for the guys who like fitter girls or 25-30% for the guys who like them thiccer. If people say they like bigger than that you gotta think about prioritising health over aesthetics. Considering that women carry usually 6-9% more body fat at the same fitness level, that's like the equivalent of 11-19% body fat on guys (the athletic look) or 16-24% body fat (dad bod look).

It depends on the body fat layout. I tend to store fat in my mid section, so I need to be thinner to prevent underlying conditions. It's all about the belly fat mg doc told me.I am at 21percent body fat, but he wants me to lower the fat and build the muscle as my cholesterol is high and my hear arterirs are stiffening. Plus,menopause is just arou d the corner. Rule of thumb. Mid section should be lean and blood work should be good as well as heart ultrasounds.

This is body positivity, truth and science about how genetics affect body fat distribution. Like a woman having huge hips and thighs yet shredded abs. This is a great way to explain body diversity in women. Especially because female hormones fluctuate so much which can cause high fluctuations in weight. I have a lot of cellulite and fat in my legs and glutes and knees even though I’m really muscular and slimmer in my upper body. And it used to make me really insecure but the way you explain anatomy helps me feel a lot better about my body which helps me keep working towards stronger legs no matter how they appear compared to my upper body. When I suffered from an ED and hated my body, I may have been at a lower body fat percentage but I was at the worst health of my life! Now that I’ve learned to love my body not only do I eat healthier, but I workout more consistently, love cardio again, and my whole life doesn’t revolve around my weight or how my body looks compared to others. Not to mention, I’m 5 ft 4in, that combined with being female, of course my legs are gonna look more short and stout. I’m currently working through body dysmorphia because I don’t want to end up like my brother in law. I hear what you’re talking about all the time from women which is great but hearing it from a man is so refreshing. Anyways, that’s my little ramble. Have a great day. Lift heavy work hard. Also, A-dyslexia was f’ing hilarious.

I love to walk and it helps my mental well being as well as tone my legs. Not trying to win a race, but fast enough to break a sweat. My tummy is not perfectly flat but I do have a well defined waist. No saddle bags but working the inner thighs to get rid of the fat/jiggle. Got a thigh gap except at very top. Working on building back glutes. Hate the new BBL look that is popular now, but do want a nice firm bum. Once I get enough muscle established, I plan to gain a little weight to add some back to my breasts. That is really the only place that age and gravity have hit hard. Though vanity plays a small part in my efforts, the real goal is to be fit, mobile, cognitively aware and avoid a nursing home in my latter years. I eat like a carnivore with occasional cheats with small servings of ice cream. I am not starving myself, but eat to satiety.

I'm at 8 percent to 10 as I get illnesses at higher levels. Im also 33kg. I got 2 cancer scares and osteoporosis i reversed that to osteopenia. Its that now fortunatly never let go off the weights. Have low body fat 15 years. I didn't eat much fat or sugar. I walk 50k. It does affect relationships though. Can confirm. I need to gain a few kilo on the 33kg as its dangerous I'm afraid of the fay lost due to insomnia. My hips are 30 and my waist is 21 and my thighs are 16. I have a six pack and visible veins and delts in shoulders. Ive insomnia. I do have a gaunt appearance. Ive got an extremely small frame ideal would be six stone ten. Im healthy enough hearts fine but i need to gain more muscle as being my current weight is unsafe. I passed out once. My blood pressure gets low if i eat wrong. I have to eat well enough. If i overheat, i faint. Thats walking around. I make sure my room is well ventilated. I sunburn easily. Im a natty. Walk loads. Very strict diet. Never slept much. Always very lean. Heart rate is 38 at night 50s during the day but trucking. Dont recommend though. I have to alter everything and sunburn easily.

Thanks for telling us! I honestly didn’t know all of this. I thought they did this naturally and didn’t realize it was so extreme.

It’s not just about fat percentage, it’s where you put it on. Now I’m older I have to aim for lower body fat than when I was younger, mine just sticks to my torso. If you’re lucky enough to have it on your boobs and bum only you look better with higher body fat. It’s a balancing act!

That 30 percent photo is accurate if you are an athlete and have lots of muscle mass. I get regular DEXA scans for sport. Normally around 20 percent fat at 170 lbs, 177 cm on DEXA. Eat around 5000 calories a day (tracked). Had a really bad ski accident and was bedridden for a few years. I ate a lot to get nutrients for healing and got fat fast (for me). I looked like the 30 percent photo maybe closer to the 40 percent photo. I was at 31 percent body fat on DEXA.

I heard that bodybuilders are using Ozempic, after a competition, to not over eat because refeeding can kill them. Many would sleep in a chair cause they are filled to the gills with food... don't want to choke on food when laying down to sleep.

"After you win the competion strive for a healthier bodyfat% and don't think you're fat". Very good advice although in reality not simple to switch that mindset but if you achieve that sometimes another problem can occur, the environment. Because some people can make rude comments and react openly shocked: Wow, really don't recognize you because of all the weight gain. @Greg; Maybe you could (or already have made?) a video about how to deal with uninvited comments about your weight gain in general because people with ED also struggle really hard with all these comments.

I'm naturally at about 15% body fat. I'm 5 ft tall at 90 lb. And I still have a bunch of fat on my bum and thighs 😢. All of this makes cuts challenging, have to go low in my calorie intake

I was 30% body fat and hour glass shape at 5ft7 i didnt have a muffin top but did have a belly not big, but still my waist size was far smaller than most women 27 inches and 44 inch hips, not everyone looks fat or obese at 30% body fat. I certainly didn't, Women can definitely look very sexy at 30% and dont agree with him at all saying 30% is fat. At 20% body fat i have some ab definition still got a little belly like a bump i dont feel like i look lean because i am still curvy with thick thigh a butt and small waist. I train 6 days a week
