It's not always a bad thing. If the author has established the emotional narrative prior to the fight, the chorographer should be able to construct a technical narrative to match it. I don't think you'll ever get a GREAT fight scene, but you can easily get a good one.

i think my favourite example of this is alphonse vs. kimblee. he's the more pacifistic brother, who had until that point refrained from using a philosphers stone, but now found himself and his mortally wounded friend in a position where they were too injured to continue and the only way to keep themselves alive was for al to not only charge into battle alone against some of the strongest, most deadly opponents in the show with no promise of victory, but also to compromise his morals (using the stone, fighting to kill). the choreography is insane, fluid, tight; and there's a ton of intense back and forth between them. i could go on at this length about the greedling vs bradley fight too. fmab is just wild.

My favorite fights are in HunterxHunter, especially the later ones which get very technical but are almost always emotional whether in their development of the main characters or the sheer disparity of one of the fighters. Some of my favorite ones are fights that don't even involve much fighting, like Kurapika vs Chrollo and the spiders. He does fight Uvogin but when he got Chrollo that was the high emotional aspect of the very technical way he fought Uvogin who many more experienced fighters stood no chance against. Also the dodgeball fight which was just dodgeball to the extreme but it was very good.

You forgot to mention just one more thing: Camerawork The 'boring fight' in K is mostly because of the lack of close up shot, not because the fight is bad; as you said it was choreographed pretty good Now compare to the fight of Hajime no Ippo and other battle manga, they actually include a lot of close shot and middle shot from different angles; camera angles also play an important role in fighting scene especially in fast paced fight Otherwise, it's a great video, keep it up
@notproductiveproductions35046 жыл бұрын
donflamingo795 those are actually medium shots. A close up is fairly closer to the focal point (tl;dr version of a Film Riot video I saw)
@chrisossu20706 жыл бұрын
It also has to do with neither character's emotions really coming through in the storyboarding or attack effects. Misaki at that moment is straight-up pissed and confused at seeing Saruhiko, while Saruhiko is absolutely obsessed with maintaining Misaki's attention. Neither is really conveyed through the way they fight.

I personally find one Berserk moment especially important to mention. It is when Guts was trying to leave The band of Hawk and Griffith himself dared stop him. The quite and still sight of snowy hills on the background, friends keeping their breath in awaitence of the battle and in the end the onle swing of a sword made the difference between Guts's life after and afore. It was not about technical part of the fight, because it was quite one, but it was about an immesurable emotional link among those characters
@Blueline3691 Жыл бұрын
I interpreted it as a challenge of eachother's resolve for their dreams. Guts wanted to search for his own purpose so that he could stand as an equal whereas Griffith was not willing to give up his best tool for achieving his dream of building an empire.

Xion Bagel not counting overall, if you could take the best moments from GT, and the best moments from Super where do you rank Gt and Super on a scale of 1-10??
@KajinDMV7 жыл бұрын
Xion Bagel I feel the exact same way, couldn't agree more. GT had very creative concepts, just sub par execution. Plus the beginning half of the series was.. was.... well, it was boring af. GT still imo had more memorable moments and more timeless events than Super has produced. Just not enough "umph". Super has had its impressive moments and concepts, but overall I feel as if I'm watching a fanfic or a very bold and adventurous video game alternate story line. *GT* : (6.5/10) - (GT just left a very somber and bittersweet tone. So even though I applaud them for killing characters off and having permanent consequences, often times it felt as though much of the universe we did love about DBZ was lost and forgotten.) *SUPER* : (6.5/10) - (Super does well at giving fans exactly what they want, only, it comes at the price of (cliche incoming) the soul of the dragon ball we know and love. The essence and consistency that we grew to love has become expendable, for whatever the newest "wow" moment can be to top the last big "wow" moment.) We can only hope Super goes further into the future, past the end of 'Z' and redeems both, the non canon and canon continuations we've gotten thus far.

Battles arent always deathmatches and sometimes not even anything of true value is on the line, yet there is still tension. When the personal reasons or the circumstamces force the fight it gives it a mix of tension and also hollowness. But the good kind. "A meaningless fight" is sometimes more effective than a standard battle with a clear goal. It all depends on the emotion.

I'm coming back to this video shortly after having watched Chihayafuru, a prime example of a non-battle battle series, and I'm realizing one it's big strengths is how much narrative weight it can put on each fight. There's a technical aspect to that it explains, arguably overly so, but how much emotion is put into it is really part of why the series shines. And it's why there's two fights within about 4 episodes of each other that got me so invested I almost cried at the results.

Of course you amazingly covered the emotional and physical aspect of a fight scene but i think when it comes to the entertaining aspect of a fight its a whole different story.I think most modern films ruin fight sequences by trying to follow every single move a character makes during a fight (punches,kicks...etc) by either shaking the camera every time the somebody hits someone else or by having the camera being really close to a character.But I think every fight scene between two people should have a wider camera angle.Take most of Rock Lee´s fights for example... in every single one you can always see (if lees combatant is a melee fighter) lee and his enemy all the time, this creates a epic sense of....well....epicness to the fight and that is what I think makes a fight scene truly great!

one of my favorite fights in all of anime is one I feel no one would pick, and that's ken oyanagi vs rohan where they play RPS. While it seems average at first, it perfectly conveys how ken try's to live up to rohan and shows his mental fortitude, whilst showing rohan's confusion but also his underlying genius. Also its just really entertaining I love watching it.

All I can think of are mangas unfortunately. Anyway, to get good romance you don't watch romance animes. Anyway here are a few I like in anime: Kara no Kyoukai -my favourite. Steins Gate had good romance. Baccano had some nice couples. My fav. being the burglars from the opening(the opening is awesome). Whispers of the heart -its a romance movie and corny as fck. I like it. That's all I can remember right now, these are the ones where romance was prominent and was good.

Do you know anime? Fight scenes are around 30 to 2 hours and if you have a problem with that then just don't watch anime.
@n0ame1u17 жыл бұрын
It depends on the anime. A long-running shonen anime will have extremely long fight scenes, but outside of that you barely ever see fight scenes lasting for more than one or two episodes. I'd say that most fight scenes are far shorter than 17 minutes, especially considering that many anime are only 4 hours (12 episodes) long. I mean, just look at Mob Psycho 100, or the Fate series, or the Index series, or DanMachi, or Fullmetal Alchemist/Brotherhood, or the Magi series, or Nanatsu no Taizai, or basically any show that's less than 50 episodes long. Most fight scenes are resolved within 20 minutes, almost all are resolved within 40, and none that I can think of last over an hour. EDIT: I realize that FMA Brotherhood is over 50 episodes long, but whatever.

@jeangentry66566 жыл бұрын
To me, a good fight scene is one that tells a story through it's violence, we get to see into the mind of the fighters. Two of my favorites is the fights Roy has against Lust and Envy in FMA, because they tell us so much about him and about the sin he's facing. In the Lust fight, we just just driven Roy is, how fierce he is as fighter, and how straight up BRUTAL he can be. In Lust, we see her sadism, which is also her fatal flaw- had she just made sure Roy and Havoc were dead, she could have finished Riza and Al easily. With Envy, we see Roy truly become the personification of Wrath itself, we see how cruel he can be. We also see Envy actually in FEAR, even as he shouts at Roy not to look down on him. We also see that he is always scheming, and that being understood by Ed struck a more fatal blow than Roy's flames did.
