We ride to a stunning, historic English Country House, to discuss the attributes that make a gentleman's motorcycle. What sets these bikes apart from the majority of motorbikes, that make them the quintessential gentleman's ride? The BMW R 18 and Triumph Speedmaster make a fine pair, and look just as at home outside a country house as they would anywhere. That cant be said for all motorcycles, and we go into the reasons why.
In this video, there is some lovely cinematic filming of the motorcycles riding, and you can gain an accurate impression of what they sound like.
These motorcycles appeal to the connoisseur, not so much for the masses. Like a connoisseur of fine watches like a Rolex or Patek Phillipe, or a connoisseur of fine wine, tea, gin, gentleman's attire etc. a motorcycle connoisseur understands the finer things that make the difference.
Sit back and enjoy the discussion, between father and son, in a stunning location.

The makers in America --- Harley and Indian, are selling "attitude". The last Indian ad I saw said the word "attitude" like 5 times. The last thing our societies need is more morons with an attitude. But a gentleman's bike? That goes too far the other way. There must be some kind of happy medium

For me it is the best channel, I believe it is good to diversify the times, since we know that it is a channel of who loves the art in the bike (Cruisers or classics). I always divulge the channel a lot, because in addition to the natural conversations about motorcycles, there is relaxation and the truth about the defects and qualities. Keep it up !!! I choose R18, a work of art . A Hug from Brazil

I chose the Speedmaster. Just picked up the black and white three weeks ago. Couldn’t be happier. I still remember being a kid, pushing my lawn mower to mow another house and seeing a metallic brown Bonneville (650 I believe) for sale on a front lawn. I’ve wanted one ever since. Finally did it.

Before I bought my R18, I test rode several cruiser/retro style bikes including Harley’s & Indians. The two finalists for me were the Triumph Bobber & the R18. I found the Triumph was sportier feeling with the steeper rake and lighter weight. It wanted to turn more easily. It had a great exhaust note with the stock pipes. But, the R18 between 3000 and 4000 RPM has such a wonderful rumble that I literally laugh out loud each time I hit that portion of the rev range. I still may add the Triumph to the garage at some point, perhaps to replace my sport bike. But between the two, the R18 was my pick.

I remember watching the Mr Darcy review of the Moto Guzzi V7 Special and how I kept wondering what the intermittent sizzling sound I kept hearing was. Until I realized it was his drool dripping on the hot exhaust. So I put my money on that being his next bike.

I have a Speedmaster, I bought a new Chrome edition one last year, so it's obvious what my choice is! I find it relaxing to ride compared my previous bike, an R9T, which always felt you had to hoon it a bit. Riding that was all about the bike; riding the Speedmaster is all about the ride.

I love these bikes, they're both beautiful, but for me, as a taller rider, I'd prefer the BMW. It's pure class and lovely to behold. For polishing chrome, especially if it's a bit manky or rusty, the trick I learned is to make a decent sized pad of aluminium foil, dip it into some water, and scrub the chrome as hard as you like. The aluminum, being softer than the chrome plate, combined with the water which acts as a lube, breaks down to form aluminum oxide which acts as a polishing paste. It works really well with stubborn spots. Have you guys tested the Kawasaki z900rs yet? It's lovely, and a great tribute to the 70s Z1, a sort of UJM modern classic. My pick for Darcy's new steed: Moto Guzzi V7. I think he's hooked.

My gentleman's motorcycle is my H-D Road King, every time I open the garage door and look at it I smile, it' looks fantastic is lovely to ride and handles really well for its size, on the subject of grounding out the R18 , it may not be a sportsbike however if you watch fellow content creator Tea Pot One's channel there was a gentlemen on one of his tours of Scotland that was riding his R18 as though it was a Supermotard, very impressive. As for Darcy's new toy, I will go left field and say Kawasaki Z900RS

Proud owner of a Boneville T120 Chrome and i don't think it gets more gentlemanly than this. The Bonnie is like a new oldtimer. New old stock but with modern tech. I'd LOVE to see this with cars. Give me a 60s chevy malibu or an old mustang or oldsmobile, baby blue and chrome, designed exactly like back then (but with proper safety features inside) and new tech under the hood! I'd absolutely love this.

I owned a Speedmaster 1200 for about 2 years, and sold it mainly cos for my 6' 1" was a bit small. That said, it is a beautiful bike, and the engine is simply great. The BMW looks a bit roomier for taller riders.

I bought an R18 First Edition on the back of your and Freddie's reviews. I also watched Andy Missenden ride one and as he's my size (as did Kate) I thought if they can so can I. This bike brings me to my garage daily just to stand there and admire as a piece of engineering art. It has the BMW Custom Sunset paint which is a stunner in the metal. I bought mine with 700 (yes hundred) miles for more or less half price. These are a second hand bargain and a beautiful bike.

At 60+ I must be morphing into a motorcycle "gentleman" with my relatively new found appreciation and love of classic style bikes. 35 years ago, in another life, it was top flight sports hack, matching one piece leather racing onesy, helmet, boots and gloves and thrashing round like some demented racetrack refugee. I enjoyed every minute of it at the time but sometimes I look back and cringe!😂😂 I still like the occasional rideout on my ZZR and enjoy the phenomenal performance it has to offer but most of the time it's my 1200 Scrambler that wins me over.😃😃👍

So nice to see the two of you together in the videos. And how great is this to be able to share so many moments with your father/ son, that really is amazing . I lean a bit to the style of the speedmaster when it comes to looks, that having said I'm 6'3 tall and I felt totally cramped when I sat on one (had the feeling the handlebars would touch my knees on every corner) so when it comes to ergonomics I would definitely go lor the R18. A well, not my choice to make since I bought a T100 last year and absolutely loving that one, really think I've found my bike :D Greetings from the Netherlands, Gert

Both are beautiful bikes but I know I would grow weary of their bulk and resultant cumbersomeness over time as I did with my new 2017 Triumph T120. I knew straight away that I made a mistake buying the T120 and should have gone for a Thruxton R. I later bought a Thruxton R and then owned both for a few years. I have other bikes too. In 2022 I traded my T120 in for a new Panigale V2 Bayliss. I like modern classic bikes but when you also have full fat sportbikes and Ducati Monsters etc you realise how limited they are compared to them. The Thruxton is the closest to a proper sports bike and I love it for that. I still have my Thruxton btw.

Interesting concept, the "Gentleman's bike". So many people over here (US) try to make their Road/Street Glides look as "tough" as possible, sharp spikes all over, aggressive decals and such, but then they're blasting pop-country on the speakers lol. But I get a ton of compliments on my Hydra-Glide Revival and my RE Classic 350, I think because it's just a nice looking machine with a nice color. Not trying to impress or scare anyone, just there to enjoy itself. I think the "non-rider" crowd appreciates the look and approachable style moreso than the "watch out I'm scary don't get too close" attitude many of these bikes aim for. Never thought about it but yeah, maybe the "gentleman's motorcycle" is something worth discussing. Maybe it's okay to just be a good, solid dude on a nice looking machine, rather than try to cosplay a stereotypical tough guy biker all the time and spend thousands making yourself look "scary" at red lights lol

Great video, gentlemen! One comment: I own a T100 and a Speedmaster. If the Speedmaster sat as tall as the T100, as the Ol' Man suggested, it would pretty much be a T120. A big part of what makes the Speedmaster the cruiser that it is is its low stance. Take that away and it's just another model in the Bonneville lineup.

That was uncanny. I agree with absolutely everything you said. Barn door yellow number plates are ridiculous. Cruisers are not for hooning around and what ever sounded better than a Velocette with a fishtail silencer? Another good one guys. Thanks.

Great episode. I reckon I've got two Gentleman's rides, a 21plate Speedmaster and a 17 plate CB1100rs. Both great bikes..especially for someone at 5'10. Spoilt for choice. Cheers.

If you had to underline their personalities how would you describe both of these bikes? These are both on my shortlist. I have a Yamaha MT09 and on that bike it seems it’s all about twisting the throttle and enjoying the torque and acceleration. It’s fun but it’s not style. I test rode the R18 and with the sound, riding position, and looks, I got the impression it was all about the ride - which is what I’m looking for. Triumph wouldn’t let me ride the rocket so I have no reference point. I’d love to know what frame of mind your R18 and Rocket put you in when you set off.

@PatrickJWenzel The R18 satisfies your soul its like riding a living creature and it turns heads where ever it goes. The Rocket 3 is very refined, less characterful and it handles more like a sportier bike 👍🏼👍🏼

@@PatrickJWenzel I had the Yamaha XSR900 put 38k on it in 3yrs, fun yes but, The R18 is me. The Rocket shares the same fit and finish and a very pleasant ride. R18 and Rocket I am very happy with. I also have my 2008 Roadliner I bought in 2008 and its fit and finish is just as good. The Roadliner goes with the R18 thump thump which to me is a old style engine. I did change the pipes on the R18 and removed the baffles, its not loud but has more of a chug sound to it.

I used to own a Speedmaster for 2 years and 12.000 miles. It really is the best country lane motorbike, i can imagine. Unfortunately, it has quite a few limitations when it comes to everyday use, so i traded mine for a T 120, which is the better deal when it comes to having a "universal" motorbike.

@JH-ox7hn
@JH-ox7hn 20 күн бұрын
@@stevebolton8471 Insufficient ground clearance. Sub par cornering abilities. Stubburn suspension, where the rear can be fixed with an Öhlins shock, Fork is hopeless though - bottoms out too easily. Last not least, exhausting at Autobahn speed, due to the seating position, but that might be a local issue.

I believe Mr Darcy will take delivery of a certain Italian Transverse V-twin with a Stone livery. When it comes to the choice of Speedmaster vs. R18... I'm 6'8" and I think the triumph is too small. But I've ridden the lovely R18 and it's also too cramped. I'm in to cruisers mainly and I've gone from a Suzuki VL1500 to a Yamaha XVS1100 to another VL1500 and now I've ended up on an truly amazing bike. The 2011 Victory Cross Roads. the 106cui engine produces about the same power as the R18, and weighs about the same. But the experience of riding is so much better. It's got air suspension in the back that gives it superior handling and lean angle. The only Cruiser I can think of that matches it is the Honda XVS1800. That thing is next level. Well, maybe the Triumph Rocket 3 GT is even better. (My dream bike, yeah)

R18 for me, as I have done as well. Got a deal on an unused Classic from the dealer. Fantastic and characterful bike, I think of it as a muscle car (bike) with what it offers. Btw the Classic’s simple exhaust is a fair bit louder and deeper than the Pure model, but you lose the fishtail. Thanks for your videos and insight.

If we're talking about looks alone, then the R18 is my choice, hands down. The Speedmaster is beautiful, but I really love the R18's stretched-out frame and the tasteful pinstripe around the tank, then the swell of the exhaust out back. It looks like concept art of a classic motorcycle. Darcy, are you going for that Kawi W800 from the other day? I said MG V7 before, but now I don't know.

The BMW'S reverse electric motor sells the bike to me, i've owned the speedmaster 2021 model. And the Triumph Thunderbird is a gentlemens motorcycle, ive owned one. the speedmaster is a beautiful bike styling is stunning, Triumph manufacturers traditional styles. Harley-davidson and Triumph are the only companies that manufacture beauty. Indian manufacturers beautiful cruiser engines. To each their own Moto Guzzi cruisers the recent models are true beauty I'd buy one tomorrow if i could. Ride safe

Good vid. I own T120s which might be what you are getting, although the new moto guzzis re getting a lot of attention. I tried a speedmaster. . .it was my original intent to get one, but the T120 just seemed a bit more subtle and did everything better in my estimation. Coming from a K1600, I am also surprised by the speed of the T120. . .more than enough for anyone or should be. On most curvy roads I have to double or even triple the speed limit to challenge the bike, and that is not going to end well long term. I posit that poorly handling bikes are more fun in turns because you simply can’t or would want to go that fast. . .yet still fun.

It would be a sad world without Harleys and big cruisers. It's good to live in a time when there's plenty of choice. I could ride a Harley one day and a Honda Monkey the next, not a problem. I'm liking the smaller cc bikes that are coming to the market - cheaper, less polluting, less congestion, anything that gets people out of cars better for everyone if more people rode bikes.
