This video cannot have been released at a better time, currently debating wether to get the Triumph or R18... Edit: I agree with most of this video. Especially the gauge cluster on the Rocket 3, the chrome exhaust and feel it gives off... Think I'll buy an R18 tbh. Coming from bonnies and royal enfields, think it's a better choice
@Bradshaw81216 күн бұрын
If you're buying a R18 be sure you want to keep it long-term - it's a beautiful bike to own but depreciation is horrendous. The RRP is well over £20k but there are 2021 model year bikes available for sale at less than £8K which show little sign of holding, trade-in prices are commensurately less. Regarding the R3, unless it's brand new, suggest you investigate the issues which necessitated the recall of several model years (both R3 and R3GT) for the rear brake. I had a similar dilemma as yours and bought the R3GT mainly because of superior performance overall although the Triumph, having half of the depreciation curve of the BMW, was / is a factor.

@notacrazyyeti437015 күн бұрын
@@Bradshaw812 The depreciation curve is hellish on the BMW, seeing 2023 models for sale at around 15k, and even 12.5 if you look hard enough is alarming. I did really want the BMW as I think it is one of the best looking modern retro bikes on the market. That being said, the appeal of the R3 is undeniable, it's a beautiful machine and I do think I won't get tired of it anytime soon.

I own a 2020 r18 and a 2024 rocket storm gt. Love the R18 but it took me a long time to get used to it. Every day riding the r18 is a windy day. Feels like it anyway because of the wind buffeting. Found that wearing an open face helmet reduced the noise. Suspension on the rear can be harsh and reminded me of the twin cam fat boy. I get 55mpg on a long journey, I upgraded the seat for £600 and it was worth every penny. The R3 wow I took to it right away and love it. Best I’ve had was 42mpg. It is so nimble and makes me giggle more than the R18. Expensive service on R18 for 6000 miles. (Valves) I ride my bikes constantly due to not owning a car.

Both are wonderful in many ways. I’d considered both before buying my R18 Classic. No doubt the Rocket 3 has more power, is lighter and handles better. But, the R18 has more character and looks more classic to my eye. I do also have a S1000R, so far more acceleration and handling than either the R18 or Rocket 3. That ended up being why I picked the R18. If you only could have one bike and like more of a sporty feel, the Rocket 3 is a great option.

@justdad5317 күн бұрын
I have not owned either but I have ridden both and found the R18 front end to flop in during low speed turns. The R18 motor is under powered for it engine size and physical size. I generally don't need a ton of horsepower but BMW needs to give the R18 more power or cut the weight of the bike in my opinion. Riding the new Rocket 3 and I found it hands down a better motorcycle and that is probably the reason why R18s are being heavily discounted in every country they are being sold. The R18 is likely to discontinued and yes used prices are terrible if you want to sell yours. If your planning on holding on to an R18 for twenty years and hoping the lack availability will drive up the price seems to be a bad bet. Witness the BMW R1200C, Suzuki RE5, Yamaha TX750, Suzuki Katana, Yamaha GTS1000, BSA 650 Goldstar, Honda DN01, Ducati Paso, Yamaha Niken, etc. Since looks and style is subjective I could see why someone just looking at the bikes might pick the R18. I think 9 out 10 people after riding bith bikes for a day would pick the Triumph Rocket 3.

These bikes left two very different impressions on me, the R18 offering a superbly stylish and visceral cruising experience while the R3 beckoning me to tear past the gets of Valhalla and give Oden the bird from Jesus. And as a pilot I’ll add they both remind me of aircraft engines: The R3 of the Merlin and the R18 of a Lycoming. But for customisation and which bike I think I’ll still be gawking at years down the track, the R18 takes the cake.

I bought an R18 with option 719 Galaxy Dust paint. I would describe the R18 as a piece of dynamic art which was designed with passion and elegance. There are so many small details which show that someone cared about the detail. Not so common in our modern age, and not what you would always expect from Germany! As much as I like the fish tails, I changed the exhaust to a Rogue Motorcycles cat back. I is not Harley offensive, but sounds strong and meaty. The tech in the R18 is unexpected, but awesome.

Got to be one of each for my garage. The R18 is an instant classic and a thing of beauty which will almost certainly be very collectible in years to come and the R3 is an absolute must for those special days when you need to run around the city pretending to be Judge Dredd.

I always love warching your videoes in those beautiful places you live in. For sure these bikes compete according to me, due to the biggest cruisers from each brands in the lineup with biggest engines each. For me the R3 is a step down from a BossHoss. So why not get the V8 with better sound and loads of weight extra and automatic 2 speed 😄 For me, cruising isn’t about big HP figures, I prefer the BMW state of art R18 design and feel, compared to a 180HP bike. I’m only a bit sad about the leg position, and BMW don’t provide optional seats that i could try, to see if it helps. In the end i will leave both of them for a V2, i just love their pulse and good leg position.

Great vid! The BMW is a clear winner for me! I can acknowledge how impressive the Rocket is but (and I say this as a Triumph owner!) the R3 is the only bike in the entire Triumph stable that I don’t like the look of. I really appreciate my own motorcycle - which probably doesn't come as a shock to anyone. It's a Rocket 3 Touring from about a decade back. It's a much more classic American bagger layout that gives that old school feel the BMW also has in spades. But it still performs like any Rocket. The new Rocket is just an entirely different class of bike to the old Rocket - in either of its guises. It's much sportier, much more of huge Speed Triple, and it's not something I generally go for in bikes. It's a great bike, but not really to my taste, nor do I feel it would be comfortable for what I like to do. The BMW is just ludicrously wide and just entirely impractical but I do enjoy its looks.
@motorcyclemeditationsКүн бұрын
They are really both really beautiful. I would have gone for an R18, only things I don't like about it is the jutting out boxer engine and its ground clearance. On Indian roads with speed bumps, I would scrape the middle real quick because of the ground clearance. I also don't know what the turning radius is, so there's that. The Rocket 3 is a dream motorcycle too. Absolutely beautiful in every way. I have the BMW 1250 GSA at the moment and I am looking at something more vintage looking like the R18 But the lower ground clearance and the freakin' engine jutting out, its just a bit too much.

I'm 80 years old and still riding. I've owned at least 30 large displacement bikes, including a 480 hp Boss hoss and Harleys. My 2021 R3 GT is, by far, the best of them all! All it needed was a BT-Moto ECU upgrade to increase the HP by 35 HP which I did and it's a killer! The R18 is excellent but is a wannabe takeoff of the earlier models whereas Triumph has produced a radically changed ultra high performance machine; 95 HP be damned. I also see the fit and finish of my GT as excellent and the comparison is not even close IMHO!

This reminded me of the comparison video, where you put Davidson Breakout 117, BMW R 18, Triumph Speedmaster in a line up. You gave good marks to the Speedmaster, but at the end of the day there just isn't a comparison in size from the Speedmaster to the R18 or the Breakout. This time the R18 is made out to be the little guy! Or maybe less big, as the R18 isn't small. Like the Rocket is the next level up guy at the gym, if I recall your analogy correctly. I still don't care for the boxer engine or frankly not a fan of the look of the fishtail exhaust of the R18 (can't speak to the sound as I have not heard it in person, videos only translate so much), but I must agree on this point that the R18 is a much classier look overall, for sure. I agree on your point that the exhaust of the Rocket is lacking (in appearance) a bit, and a bike that big really should have a reverse. For me, I would still lean on preferring the Rocket out of these two bikes, but as the Rocket is in its own class, or dare I say orbit, not too many bikes you could compare it too I suppose!

threw my leg over the R18 awhile back. As a over 6 ft tall gent the R18 was a let down and the only thing, and i mean only thing I hated about it was the jugs and the foot placement. there is obviously zero opportunity to place forward pegs on that beautiful bike and while that would seem to be a mute point given what it is unfortunately it was a deal breaker.

Well done for explaining the massive wallet busting depreciation with both bikes if bought new #thepeoplemustbetold #donthidethereality

I think in this case we have oranges and apples! Triumph should be compared to Ducati, BMW should be compared to an Indian or Harley.

Not much point in comparing apples to apples; it’s the differences that are the point 👍🏼
