What makes a martini a martini?

There are very few American inventions more American than the martini - a classic cocktail of gin and vermouth, garnished with lemon. But today, a martini's ingredients may be up for debate, with variations and proportions skewed to personal taste. "Sunday Morning" contributor Kelefa Sanneh looks at the history of the martini, with a twist.

Why were they using champagne glasses to serve a martini? They were at a bar, who certainly would have martini glasses... The Kingsman recipe: "I'll have a Martini. Gin, not vodka, obviously, stirred for 10 seconds while glancing at an unopened bottle of vermouth." My preference: Perfect dry Martini: 1- Put ice in glass. 2- Pour vermouth over ice. 3- Swirl ice in glass. 4- Toss ice, leaving light film on inside of glass. 5- Pour chilled gin/vodka in glass as desired. 6- Add olive/onion/twist as/if desired. 7- Enjoy.

@ …….I never went to rehab like my co-workers, saved my money instead of wasting it on alcohol, etc and bought STOCKS in my 20’s, 30’s, and 40’s, and RETIRED at 49!! (oh, and paid CASH for my home, and gently used V-10 convertible sports car). 😎🤷🏼‍♂️
