Why did the AR15 become so popular in the US? Two reasons in my opinion: 1) Because the federal & many state governments tried to ban it, which resulted in many people buying one before the bans went into effect. 2) You mentioned it in your video: "The AR15 is the Lego of rifles." It's modularity allows an infinite variety of modifications & accessories to suit the individual person's physical stature/needs or intended application, such as hunting, competition, or home defense. Plus, the rifle's low-power cartridge & very low recoil is attractive to many people that don't like the heavier recoil of rifles chambered, for example , in 30-06, .308/ 7.62 × 51 NATO, etc. There are likely additional reasons for its popularity that I didn't mention.

Definitely a user friendly and versatile fire arm. Recommend for anyone. The anti gun individuals and media referring to it as a weapon of war has always been something that annoys me. It is a far cry from it's battle ready cousins. Some people tend to have an irrational and uneducated fear of "tactical" looking firearms. I proved this theory once by sharing photos of my ruger 10-22 both before and after I swapped out it's wooden chassis for a for a black "tactical" style one. And asked why should I be allowed to own the wooden rifle but not the other. And the answers poured in. " That's an assault rifle." "That's a weapon of war" "That is a tool for killing the other is a hunting rifle." "An old wooden rifle isn't anywhere near as dangerous or capable as that assault rifle"... mind you. Same rifle, same specs, same rate of fire, no special optics or larger magazine, no pistol grip... Just a black frame.. absolutely nothing changed about the function or capability...same little tin can target shooter... yet people who know nothing about it judged it solely based on its appearance.

Let me preface that I own over a dozen AR style rifles and I’m against any and all forms of gun control. “It is a far cry from its battle ready cousin”… the difference is an auto sear, a very simple mechanism within the trigger that can be replicated with a piece of folded sheet metal; everything else is functionally identical. In fact, a quality Civilian AR-15 is in many ways better than what the average infantryman gets issued. Also, the auto function is very rarely used aside from suppressive fire, and even then the roll is best suited for a light machine gun to allow your rifleman to conserve ammo and lay down accurate, effective fire without overheating their rifles. An AR-15 is absolutely a “weapon of war” and that isn’t a bad thing, people need to understand the fact that citizens need to have the ability to take on the government with equal or greater force. The fact that you’re trying to downplay the significance and effectiveness of an AR-15 is exactly why we keep losing gun rights. Citizens SHOULD be able to own EVERY weapon that our military uses, that’s the entire point of the 2nd amendment

@CrayT05Ай бұрын
But slightly less reliable than the AK but more accurate because it shoots smaller 5.56x45 compared to bigger and hefty 7.62x39 and about the maintenance ease, I think the AK would win the ease of maintenance due to its gas-piston action which greatly contributes to keep the moving parts clean

They originally did, and there are "AR15" marked full autos out there. You can also still buy transferable machine guns made pre 1986, so full auto AR15's, M16A1's and a few M16A2 are still out there available to buy for civilians. BTW we need to stop using the term "Assault rifle" like it's 1944.
@Josh.c10114 ай бұрын
@@samstewart6232 There is no clear cut designation for assault weapon. This is because it is not a thing. "Assault rifles" are lightweight fully automatic rifles intended to be used to breach an area in an assault. They are full auto to lay down relatively effective suppressing fire while still being light. The AR-15 does not have that capability, as it is semi automatic.

Nice to see you mentioned the AR means Armalite and not assault weapon. I've brought new shooters or people who were interested in trying out firearms and let them start on a pistol. First something like a .22lr and then to a comped 9mm. From there I move onto rifles. They usually think the AR-15 is going to be scary even after seeing the difference between the 9mm and .223. But after shooting it, it quickly becomes one of their favorites to shoot. Had one shoot a bolt action .308 and they hated how much it recoiled and didn't want to try a shotgun.

It's a small arms cartridge and the reason we have so many "pistols" chambered for the same round says a lot. I would like to have a conversation about this and I will check the comments regularly.

I trained and Qualified using the M16A2, then A3, M4 the M9 sidearm, and a large variety of other firearms, so the 'AR' platform is just second nature to me.

It's unpopular because it looks military and it looks military because it was originally developed for the military. What is interesting is that most of the state legislation banning what they call "assault weapons" defined an "assault weapon" mostly on features regarding its appearance and not based on feature regarding how it functions. With a "traditional" stock, the drop at the comb is intended to elevate the barrel up closer to the eyeline of the shooter, good for traditional sights. Unfortunately, this creates a lever arm for recoil forces to push against equal to the distance from the barrel axis to the point of shoulder contact, creating a lot of muzzle rise. The point of the inline stock is to eliminate the lever arm and reduce muzzle rise. The drawback to this is that it places the bore axis lower with respect to the shooter's eye. Incorporating the sights into the carry handle was the solution to this problem. The "direct impingement" system is perhaps Stoner's best innovation, althought it was a source of controversy that contributed to the myth of inherent unreliability. The advantage of DI over piston operated is that it keeps the overall weight down and reduces the mass that’s reciprocating while the gun is operating, reducing "felt" recoil. Up to about ten years ago, if you wanted to start a debate guaranteed to generate butthurt, "DI vs Piston" was a good candidate. That said, there isn't a piston rifle that shoots as smooth as an AR with a rifle length gas system, although rifle length limits barrel length to not less than 18". A lot of the "tweaks" that were done to the AR platform stem from the difference between its original intended design and application (poking holes in Warsaw Pact helmets in the Fulda Gap at 600 yards with a 20 inch barrel) to poking holes in malnourished goat humpers from across the room with a barrel length that didn't make dismounting an APC a PITA.
