It is self aware, but also sincere. The characters never turn to the camera to roll their eyes, and even when absurd comments are made, they still fit the situation and person saying them. The drama and danger are never undercut by the comedy. And the comedy is always natural and used as part of the plot.

That's exactly what this series is. It never goes out of it's way to say anything is serious. Tatsu goes OUT of his way to make sure this doesn't ruin the fun the sensation the feelings/vibes that we feel WHILE READING A COMEDY or EMOTIONAL scene, it's done great but never too much into it. It's a balance of everything. (Yes it has flaws SOMEWHERE but nothing is perfect.)

The visuals absolutely matter! I love how they aniimate small details that dont really *need* to be animated, but in doing so it adds so much character to the show. For example, in Episode 7 there was a particular scene where Momo shakes her head, and her ear ring twists, turns, and a gleam of light flashes off it. You can even hear the audible jingle it makes. Tiny details llike this add movement and life to an otherwise stale medium. The lighting also is incredible. Episode 7 has the best lighting so far. Just look at it - you really feel like Momo, Okarun, and Aira are in a dark warehouse with the bright sun shining in, as only small parts of them are illuminated. When Turbo Granny pulls out the phone, the soft glow of the screen details how dark the room is. It's just incredible how detailed and real the show looks given how they chose a flat color palette. The visual story telling really matters, and Dandadan sets a new standard for the animation industry.

For those who are Anime only so far, AFTER episode one I jumped to my shonen jump subscription and read all 168 episodes ( back then ) in a couple of days and is one of the best things I have done in terms of entertainment. DanDaDan is one of the greatest comics I have read, thats how good it is, I think it's still very underrated but once the anime keeps taking off and word of mouth becomes a thing DanDaDan manga sales should skyrocket. NO other and I MEAN it no OTHER Manga has the same balance of Comedy, Action, Romance and with a pinch of heartfelt drama that this manga has, I would argue is a perfect 30% 30% 30% and then 10% of heartfelt sad shit.

That's a great breakdown ngl, tho it has MORE elements too (Not gonna go deep this time, I always make a paragraph) For context, I have followed this manga since vol 1, a long time reader, and the sales have gone up significantly IN JAPAN The manga was being WIPED from the shelves lol, I believe the only reason it didnt become mainstream was because of the nerdy main-genre's (Occult, Paranormal, Alien)

regarding your rant about people complaining about animation in Anime. I'm a manga-reader and prefer the manga most of the time when it comes to adaptations. JJK, Dungeon Meshi and Dandadan, changed my mind a lot on this. Animation is a different medium, you cannot simply use the same panel from a manga as a Animation-Frame, and expect the same result. The animes mentioned earlier realized this, and used the manga-panels more like a story-board and less like a 1-to-1 requirement. Which makes them so much more enjoyable. I still prefer the manga-versions, simply because they are easier to consume and I don't need to invest as much time, but the anime adaptations got so much better that I don't see either version as the lesser option.

That's exactly what i love about these anime adaptations. And Dandadan's director (Yamashiro Fuga) talked about how they animate certain scenes that might feel different if done 1-1 as you said. It honestly opened my mind! A filmmaker making dandadan gives such a great sense of security~ I honestly recommend watching the interview especially where he discusses about Manga and anime. The particular scene was when serpoians were first shown in the hospital alley, In manga, the panels get smaller and smaller as momo advices okarun and prepares to go to the tunnel, and then a single page spread of serpo's is seen as we flip the page. It causes a sense of darkness in room, eerieness, and shock, and size. In anime they used the light from windows to depict it, as the lights go off one by one, and then we see the serpos, in dark. With the same sense of eerieness.

Takakura is a pretty common surname (I say pretty common because it's not THAT common but a normal name). And Ken is pretty popular masculine name. Tho they dont have anything in common looks wise, Okarun acts the same way as ken-san sometimes. He respects others, is awkward, Bold sometimes, doesn't hold back to think about facing a danger (Although it took him a while to jump straight into action). He is basically the same as ken-san minus the face. I wish the anime had shown the Actor's face (even stylized a little) for the anime only-ies, it didnt hit as hard when the punchline was served XD (why does my comments always get soo large when I intend to briefly mention something)

For me personally, it’s because it goes that extra step everytime so well. Turbo granny could have easily have took a bit of his soul, chi etc but nope it’s his testicles. They could have easily had the three protagonists wake up in school in clothes after their battle with the mantis, nope they’re all nearly naked surrounded by their peers, something which most people have nightmares about

Man, I just binged the manga, and like I still have so many of the same questions as you! There is so much action I dont think he's had time to slow down and go into the intial character's back stories. Im not mad about it though, and at this point all theories are fair game. That said, seeing what has been enhanced in episode 8, Im kinda excited to see what is added in or expanded upon in the anime vs the manga. It keeps me on the edge of my seat every week, even if I know where the main beats are already.

Now we have seen Momo can mew to the point of changing her chin structure to look chad too XD One thing I notice a lot of people on social media miss too is that whenever a love rival is introduced, many complain on how it's generic rom com bs drama- but since Dandadan is a way more self-aware & fun comedy the love rivals are ridiculous parodies of their clichés too, not to mention the character development they get like with Aira (Also the English dub for when Momo has a chat with Aira is really good, not to mention Okarun going Pepe Silva. )

The English dub is FANTASTIC AJ Beckles is doing an amazing job as Ken Takakura. First time he transformed in episode 2 I thought it was a different voice actor! The rest of the cast is great too but AJ is the star of the show! The dub is just perfect to me so it's the only way I'm Watching Dandadan. Also the rap song Otonke by creepy nuts in the opening is amazing, there's an English version of it by Tundra on KZbin it's AMAZING. It keeps 99% of the Japanese lyrics meaning and it's on beat so definitely check it out!!!! Also if you have time, pick up the manga it's great and read from the beginning. That way you can see the few and subtle differences of the anime and the Manga!

I really don’t see any reason to watch the dub unless reading is a problem for someone, the jp voice actors all do a perfect performance and which is way more important than just Okarun having a good va.
