Maximus needed you in the arena with him. Fun reaction to watch with your emotions. Russell Crowe was sensational...helped the movie having a proper leading role actor that has male gravitas. Great casting. Luvved that first opening scene with the little bird...no words were required coz brilliant subtle facial expressions. Joachim Pheonix probably deserved a best supporting actor oscar to go with Crowe's, and the music score also. Epic movie best seen on a big screen, but always good. You made it fun...cheers.

I've read that Proximo was supposed to be arrested and forced to watch the fight between Maximus and Commodus then set free after Maximus killed Commodus, but Oliver Reed died of a heart attack before that could be filmed, so they created a scene of him being stabbed to death with another actor (seen (only from behind) standing in for Oliver Reed as Proximo.

The shot of Proximos saying "Shadows and dust" before he's killed is an outtake from previously in the film right before the Tigris of Gaul fight, where he tells Maximus, "We mortals are but shadows and dust, Maximus! Shadows and dust!"

Hace 20 años que veo esta película, y siempre termino llorando... Igual que vos. Esta vez, lloramos juntos. Sin duda, una gran película, UN PELICULÓN, que NO PUEDE TENER SECUELA HOY!!!!! Reconozco que sólo te sigo cuando reaccionas a estos clásicos, a mis pelis favoritas, y las disfruto DOBLEMENTE con tus reacciones, al ver tu mirada cándida "descubriendo" estos clásicos, y el interés que pones y como te sumergís en la trama. Vuelvo a recomendarte una peli de los 80 (1987, si mal no recuerdo) del gran Arnold Schwarsenegger: "Red heat" (aqui en Argentina se la conoció como "Infierno rojo" o "Al rojo vivo", coprotagonizada por Joe Bellucci. Me encantaría verte reaccionar a ella, y aunque es una típica peli de acción de los 80, el final tambien es bastante emotivo (no como "Gladiator", claro), al menos para mí. The charging chariot was wild " come Together ___ lock your 🛡️ stay as One" Maximus previous experience as a General proved useful. I wish I could have been a extra roaring along with the crowd seeing how it was all filmed. Whoop!!! I share your excitement Vane , bring on one of the most iconic scenes in Cinematic history - " I will have my Vengeance , in this Life or the Next" Commodus expression was priceless , it's satisfying to see him so powerless. You wouldn't dare go against the mob "mitte" let him go or "iugula" kill him , it's a popular misconception about 👍 👎 it's made up , in reality it was the Host who was paying for the spectacle that ultimately decided a Gladiator's ( raised index finger ) Fate. Lucille a courageous woman to defy the emperor especially knowing what happened to Maximus family & having a son herself. a touching moment between them & you ha had to ask about his teeth , they did use frayed stick , powders & yes urine along with goats milk to whiten there teeth , good thing they didn't. Maximus saying I'm only a slave what can I do , hasn't he heard about Spartacus. The Battle with the huge Tigres the Gaul was Epic & Savage. The 🐯 Pounced out of nowhere , they had a intricate series of pulley's & trapdoors under the Arena , they usually use lion's in other films because there easily to control. Five Tigers were on set & they were doped not that it made any difference. They weren't supposed to get within 15 feet of Crowe but the biggest tiger did , that's the shot in the film. At one point they did get loose & everybody had to run for there lives. Tigres was formidable , smart move for Maximus to change hands 'The bigger they are , the harder they Fall ' it only takes one strike to a vital spot to Triumph Maximus the Merciful!! Whenever Crowe & Phoenix were on Screen Sparks Flew , so many great lines "I have one Life left to take & then it's Done" - " Then take it Now". Planning to escape , Senator Gracchus (Derek Jacobi) was always Superb when it came to these Roles. That's right he is one of the few that can be trusted. Maximus made a valid point about a man's loyalties , you naturally follow a strong leader who has your best interests at heart & The Wishes of a Dying Man referring to Marcus Aurelius. If only they had Succeeded in escaping , you can't blame Lucius , he's only a child , it could have had a very different ending. Proximo was a good honourable man after all. Maximus V Commodus was Amazing ( Slow - Mo) Duel The Real Emperor did have his opponents wounded to gain advantage along with other cruel acts I won't mention. It was kinda surprising that Commodus Sword Skills matched up. You could feel how personal it was & what was at stake. I don't blame you for being bloodthirsty he deserved it. If you were around then , no one would be foolish enough to cross you. The Ending was Bittersweet , they were waiting for him to come home with Tears of Joy , a unforgettable moment with the Song. Juba ( it was going to be Proximo originally) burying the figures was the perfect way to finish the Film. "Now We Are Free" I'm pleased to see how much you enjoyed it , always been one of my favorites , the best of the genre. Gladiator 2 not gonna come close but it probably looks even better , I dunno how much is actual sets or CGI , Denzel Washington a great Actor but will that be enough , the reviews say it's okay but it's not gonna blow you away. We can talk more about it on the next live stream if no more weirdos show up. I also recommend checking out the TV series Spartacus: Blood & Sand from 2010. Great movie. This movie has one of my favorite quotes "I don't pretend to be a man of the people but I do try to be a man for the people" by Gracchus. You know the actor who play Gracchus played Claudius the emperor that is mention in the movie in a great mini series I, Claudius. Other great Russell Crowe movies you should see is A Beautiful Mind, L.A. Confidential ,The Next Three Days. Other great period movies are Rob Roi 1995 with Liam Nissan and The Count of Monte Cristo 2002

Weather you watch the theatrical or director's cut, it's still an incredible piece of work. So many good quotes related to who we are as people. About strength and honor as an force for what matters in life. What we indeed do in life will echo in eternity. Alone or with those we call allies or even family. Tragedy or triumph in history, we can learn from either and become what we need. What i think about Gladiator II (2024). Even if people weren't expecting nor wanted a sequel, a follow-up was actually being developed since the original. Originally it would've been about Dijimon Hounsou's character Juba. But if Ridley Scott is still involved with it and directing, then i guess that's not bad neither.

I find the reactions of younger people to this film amazing. This is one of the greatest films ever made yet so many people from your generation have never seen it. If you hate Commodus in the film, you will be interested to know that the real Commodus was even more evil. He in fact had Lucilla and her daughter Ummidia exiled to the island of Capri then later murdered after an assassination attempt on him by her husband's nephew. He also renamed Rome and all of its legions after himself. In the end, his mistress paid his wrestling partner to strangle him. By this time Rome was in absolute chaos.

Was I entertained? I was entertained! Love Maximus showing his contempt for the audience in his second fight by throwing one sword at the rich people's seats, throwing the other on the ground in disgust, and spitting on the arena floor. When the crowd still chants for him, we can see on Maximus' face the look of disbelief, as if he's thinking how mentally sick these people must be.
