I'm in a hot climate. I've been having great luck with shorts in a linen-cotton blend. They're much more breathable than chino-style shorts. Since I'm 5'11" or so, I've been getting 9" inseam shorts. I could probably wear 8" inseams also, but that's a less common length (from what I've seen).

Hi John, this video popped up in my recommended feed. Just want to say that the 6” shorts look great on you. They allow for some of you quad to show through, which makes you legs look more athletic and muscular. As long as you continue to train legs in the gym don’t be afraid to show a little of that hard work off. I’m 26, 6’ and wear 5” & 6” inseam usually and have gotten used to showing a lot of my thighs off. It felt weird at first but now I honestly could care less. And no, I don’t think shorter shorts on older men are age inappropriate. If you have decent calves and thighs and are comfortable showing them then do it. I’m super glad to see an older gentleman discussing fashion for men over 40 because I don’t think it’s discussed enough but should be, so good on you!

Last summer CBS Sunday Morning did a story about how the shorter men’s shorts are coming back. Part of the reason is because a man’s legs are the last thing to go. If you’re reasonably fit your legs are going to look good a lot longer.

@@MichaelNJohnson hey Michael, I have and normally wear a 36” waist in Wrangler 936DEN Slim. But, My Chubbies are Size 35” and fit fine. As a reference the RL Polo shorts in khaki size 36 are too small. I recommend shopping at Poshmark. Its a good way to take a chance on unfamiler brand with less $$. The chubbies look like khaki / cotton but they have some measure of stretch. I love em.

I was just shopping for shorts today. Every tag displayed the inseam length. I'm sad to say I'm over 40 and I still don't know my optimal inseam length for shorts - so I really appreciate this video! After seeing this, I will figure out my optimal inseam length - and remember that number. If I may, for you, my first impressions on the 6" inseam was "youthful / sporty looking". The 7" inseam struck me as "going out for lunch" restaurant appropriate. Agree that the 10" inseam did not flatter you. Thanks for the visual representations! This really helps a lot!!!

Great overview! A great way to build up that 3-4 inch area between knee and bottom of shorts is training with front squats in the gym, or if not comfortable with that, the seated leg extension machine, nice slow tempo - knowing your legs look good in the shorter style of shorts really gives you the confidence to wear them.

Got a kick out of you showing the old jean and cargo shorts guys worn back in the 80's -90's. Still see guys wearing them now! Definitely noticed shopping how men's shorts are getting shorter. I am 5'4', but 62 years old. Regardless of height, short shorts would not look good, unless I had thighs like a "Chubbies" model, (and I don't). The 7 and 8 inch shorts are my best choices. The chicken-leg comparison is spot on for that is the chief reason the man in long baggy shorts looks like a wally. 6'' is not bad but IMHO still that little bit too long. 5'' or even 4'' looks a lot better. Maybe not in the land of the free, home of the brave, however, because of the natural American prudery. (And prudes see the body, as we all know, from an only prurient point of view.) When shorts are 6'' short and shorter, they can also very well be wider at the opening (allowing more air in) because the thighs sticking out (horror of horrors!) does not give the chicken-leg impression at all: a point not discussed. In fact, when the opening is skin-tight, it looks and is uncomfortable. There is, furthermore, no reason whatsoever for a tall man to have to wear longer shorts: he may want to accentuate his long legs. I have personal experience of women swooning over a man's long legs being visible in a pair of shorts that are actually short, and that goes also for men over 40.. Must close by saying that (very sorry) the faded-yellow shirt with prints is definitely not suitable for a man over 40, nor for a man with light skin or light grey hair. The soft collar is that of a woman's blouse, and having that soft womanish triangle of bare skin is well... womanish. (Not at all the same as a triangle of skin on shirt with a hard(ish) collar.) Looks as if it was found in the women's section of a second-hand shop, or borrowed from the wife.

Also the Jean shorts, just for me, I just could never even try it, I prefer Chino shorts or Linen cotton blend shorts or performance patterned shorts trust me I don't wear shorts often but when I do they won't be Jean shorts because also in Texas I'm not wearing jeans at all unless they are my light weight white jeans, other than that chinos and Linen pants.

If I find a pair of shorts that I like but they're too wide my seamstress lady just brings them in at the bottom for a tapered look. Ditto for jeans and wool slacks. Can't say that I'm crazy about the look of those denim shorts but mostly because they look way too tight on you, to my eye. Maybe go up a size and they'll still look like a slim fit but not like you had to hold your breath while squeezing into them

I’m 6 foot and I really think 10 inch or maybe an 11 inch length is better for me. My legs are not skinny they’re muscular. I don’t think the ones you are wearing look right in my opinion. I also have larger waist and when I sit down, the material gets taken up.

I am in shorts now and will be to September showing off my lady legs as my wife calls them. We live in Spain and while now its only 28c it does ramp up to 40c+ I always go a size up for day time shorts to give my back wheels some well deserved air and to lessen sweat. At night I go fitted and being over 6 foot find do find it fun finding the right length, turning them up does help for a crisp look. Only just ventured into the world of denim shorts and find them great now for general faffing about but once summer hits and it gets mid 35c ............. well you can imagine. Great look book and thanks for the fashion tips for us over 40s cool cats by the way I am over 50 and still enjoy fashion, not sure it enjoys me.

I do not feel comfortable exposing that much leg. Needs to be just above the knee, when I sit they always expose too much. IMO, you should treat your denim shorts much like regular jeans. Lose the frayed edges. And yes finding the appropriate fit in the leg opening is a big challenge but a must.

As a 71 year old x skateboard world champ, I’ve seen the long baggy shorts hanging around way too long. Now, you see the younger trick based Olympic top skaters migrate to a shorter tighter inseam. Only the older wannabe bros have maintained the long baggy gangster look of their youth. Makes them look like prisoners who have been locked away from street fashion. It looks so “ridiculous” to me now. At 5’1O” and 190, I’m converting to 8”-9”.

Imo, as a lady, I think dudes have better legs for denim short shorts than most ladies wearing them. Your choice: fluffy thighs and chub rubs or some nice muscular well groomed (never shave) light tanned male legs.... Especially over 20. But I'm in a cyclist country, that helps. Our neighbours like driving oversized cars, cargo pants with chicken legs and they shape their tummies to show their love for unbearable tasteless yellow foam water.
