I dont think so n64 for games look more solid than a ps1 game, ps1 looks more pixily than a n64

I mostly like the limitations when working with the ps1 inspired graphics. but I'm not obsessed with using all the limitations, just ones that look great on modern lcd monitors. Those would in the end be just dithering and in some cases vertex snapping. I love it in combination with raytraced shadows and global illumination. it triggers my nostalgia without looking too old.

@@Marcis. YES! and these small videos does not require that much quality, retro/ps1 graphics are such a niche in gamedev that i would watch anything about it!

Fog / aggressively short render distances needed to be here IMO. Plenty of people probably don't even remember depth error being a thing considering how wobbly the games were anyway. But compared to games like Ocarina of Time, the PS1's inability to render large environments was very iconic. Compare Tony Hawk PS's maps to its remake, it's downright weird seeing that school in its entirety instead of bits at a time shrouded in a a surreal haze.

i was born in 2007 but being pretty poor had me playing army man omega soldier on my dads hand me down ps1 in 2013 so these styled games may be the most nostalgic early childhood memories i have in gaming.

Even when the N64 was first released, I was never a fan of the filtering on the textures. It just turned everything into a blurry mess and I always preferred the raw, crispness of pixels that the PS1 rendering did. You should never be ashamed of your pixels! Don't blur them out. Show them with pride!

I think the major difference between N64 and PS1 is the general aesthetics of the games. When I think of N64 I think of Banjo Kazooie, Mario 64, etc.; when I think of PS1, I think of Resident Evil and Metal Gear Solid among others. of course, I know there's Spyro but in a general sense PS1 is more serious and N64 more cartoony.

Important to not is that all of these artefacts were barely noticable on a crt TV, also, ps1 used dithering a lot to smooth things out even more, but when playing on high definition lcd today the artefacts are much more pronounced

Before watching the video, i think its the vertex wobble and the affine texture maps, and the vertex lightning and vertex shadows

Now I'm curious about texture filtering... Do we even use nearest if the intended output is not a crt? Because it looks smooth on crt right? Same thing with pixel art... You don't see the pixels on CRTs so the art looks hand-drawn which is an argument against pixel art as presented in modern media

Yes, use the nearest filtering in conjunction with a CRT shader.

I could not mistake N64 for PS1 game because of texture filtering (even with vertex wobbling). PS1 is so nice and crisp compared to N64 which looks muddy.

to be real honest, none of these make the PS1 games iconic. PS1 games themselves have this very iconic look because they were designed with the PS1's specs in mind. they had to utilize vertex colors as shadows or highlights, the draw distance being worked into the game's design (like how Medal of Honor games did or Silent Hill), and come on... just, the games look iconic. they are games made by talented people with the PS1 in mind. if you showed me footage of a PS1 game without the graphical errors, i'd still say it's a PS1 game because of how PS1 has that definitive look and feel

I prefer less wobbling effects now. The CRT TV surely showed less of that effect and I don't want to see that horrible brain damaging effect on a high resolution screens now :D
