props to you making authentic fifth gen era characters , some people who try to make retro inspired games on unity and unreal engine don't know who to make low poly characters and make them just hideous and ugly and think they made them look exactly like that era old games developed by companies tend to make characters look as best as possible with limitations in mind , not just making an ugly low poly character and call it a day

A cardboard box, huh? It sounds like you talk down to those ppl, but they did the very best they could back then. With the now better knowledge and interpretations of the systems, it sure could have looked better.. now. You are on to something there, keep it up!

Even when the N64 was first released, I was never a fan of the filtering on the textures. It just turned everything into a blurry mess and I always preferred the raw, crispness of pixels that the PS1 rendering did. You should never be ashamed of your pixels! Don't blur them out. Show them with pride!

Unreal can already convert meshes into HISM or Intstanced static meshes. Select all the meshes and then go to merge actors. Then go to batch.

Это видео больше похож на Driver 2, чем сам Driver 2. Я год уже собираю приквел Driver на UE5, но думал уйти в современную графику. А тут прям ностальгия проперла. Супер, так держать!

As someone who has never worked with a version of UE below UE5, why do so many people stay on old versions of UE4? Thus far the only thing I've ever seen in a video is someone saying they get smaller build sizes. Is there some super great plugin that's never been updated or?

Some companies lock engine versions for a project as a policy, features may be broken/removed in later versions which a project relies on, performance regressions show up, and some plugins or engine forks (Nvidia, AMD, etc.) never get updated past a certain engine version.

I'm very glad to hear that the driving won out. Personally, if it's going to be linear, I hope it being open and multi-faceted is a big focus. Something about linear pursuit games that make them difficult is that they become more like races than pursuits. If you still plan on being able to do things like switching cars and stuff like that, having linear maps would make that very difficult. How exactly would you be able to get away from the cops in a meaningful way for long enough for you to be able to actually STOP your car and switch vehicles? Imagine playing Hot Pursuit or something and just *stopping* your car. There's almost no points where that is a thing. If you were to ask me, I feel like the best option would be to not make a big open world map, but, instead, have "arena" maps that are open, but not big (think arena maps from Mario Kart, or Carmaggedon). That's kinda what you would *need* to do if you were to still have things like switching vehicles mid-pursuit, cause if maps are linear, there's not really any opportunities for you to get down time in a chase, which would make being able to leave your car a bit useless

I vote for level based, seems like you can create a way more curated and therefore exciting and cinematic experience that I don't think would be possible in an open world. In my mind I'm almost seeing it like a Hitman type game where there would be several ways to complete the objective or end the level - maybe 3 exists/ending of different skill levels or creativity to achieve. This would also reward multiple playthroughs. You could have an objectives type system (again kinda similar to hitman) where plays would want to go after certain things like "make the cop vehicle crash into a house" or something again rewarding multiple playthroughs of the same level.

One thing i struggle with is staying strict with my poly count on low poly models, one or two loopcuts too much and you go from ps1 to ps2 without even realizing.

You could do a sort of hybrid: a Mario-esque design where each level has multiple missions in it. So you can have the linear getaway, the sneaky laying-low, and the exploration while lowering scope and increasing developer control.

I never owned any PlayStation, I am a Nintendo kid and was totally into the N64. But I gotta say, over all those years and looking at many PS1 games, I think the graphics of that system have more "personality", they are more distinguishable from other 3D graphics. And being a 3D artist today myself, I really like the look of PS1 graphics, especially the unfiltered blocky textures. One day I will create my own PS1 environment. Sadly, being a 3D artist, it kills off all the mysteries about those old 3D consoles. How they could achieve their stuff. Today I understand it all.

Thank you for mentioning this. I'm always offput by all those modern games with "retro style" that just make shitty graphics because "old game look bad" both in 3d and pixelart. It's lazy and just a bad excuse in my eyes.

What if you make a mature version of Mariokart, with the damage system taking a larger role. You can have cars shoot rifles, deploy nails, oil and other abilities to sabotage other players. A con is you need to add multiplayer which might be a hustle.
