There are about as many ideas about twisting as there are gymnastic coaches. Here George Hery demonstrates what makes us twist using the laws of physics.

Quick, simple. Thank you so much! Can't wait to hit the gym and finally grind twisting with proper technique instead of just turning with my hips.

@BeyondOurLimits after you take off, just drop your left arm and use your hips to help get the twist around, and as you're doing that drop your other arm and wrap it around tight as well. both those should help get the full twist around :)

great, I've been stuck at a 1/2 twist (and a bad one at that) on the trampoline for AGES! :D

Somehow even the ones knowing what moment of inertia is can't relate it twisting unless shown a simple demonstration like this one :-) The change in body mass distribution over geometry initiates the rotation, after that you can amplify the rotation with with torque from swinging arms and tucking hands closer to the axis of symmetry.

I am not sure George understands all of the physics there, even if he uses complicated words ! The goal when we make a twist is not to have an asymetric shape, it's to tilt the body sideways (to transfer a part of the momentum of force to the longitudinal axis - sorry for the complicated words !). That's why you have to drop one arm sideways, it is not to have an asymetric shape, it's to tilt the body. And some people even call that twisting technique "tilt".
