I'm a high school student in Korea who is interested in biological clocks and I got a lot of useful information from watching videos. And I'd like to ask you some questions about the video. 1. How does exposure to artificial light at night specifically disrupt the production of melatonin, and what are the long-term health consequences of this disruption? 2. What specific mechanisms cause the circadian rhythms in adolescents to delay during puberty, and how does this biological change impact their cognitive functions and emotional well-being? 3. Could genetic factors influence the extent of circadian rhythm delay during adolescence, and how might this inform personalized approaches to managing sleep disorders in teens?

Someone should conduct a study on circadian rhythms of people that have lived in the polar circle. Where the sun stays up 24 hours a day on summer and where the sun does not appear for months in the winters.

I am convinced I have DSPS. Left to my own devices, I would go to be between 3 am and 5 am and wake between noon and 2 pm. Ive been this way most of my life but the time is shifting to later as I get older and have more flexible hours with my current job, which allows me to sleep later thus allowing me to more closely follow my unique biologically set circadian rhythm.

Nice video! One question. I'm 24 and when I don't use an alarm clock I tend to sleep for 9 hours. Is that normal?
@OxfordSparks
@OxfordSparks 9 жыл бұрын
+Adnan Mustafa Glad you liked it! Lots of people find they naturally sleep for different amounts of time, some are famous for having slept very little, whilst some of us can sleep for ages! It's mostly what's normal for you, I think ^Michaela

Actually no...if you get out into natural sunlight first thing every morning right when you wake up (not behind sunglasses, glass, or UVA blocking), you are getting the circadian clock for the day. Do that religiously every day, you can throw away your alarm clock assuming there are no circadian disruptions or mismatches occuring, like sleeping in an EMF and especially looking at blue-light emitting screens after dusk or being under artificial lights. Read John Ott for a great deal of info on this. Even his book from 1972 called "Health and Light' talks about Axelrod's Nobel Prize for the pineal-gland responses to circadian rhythms. This isn't new science. It's been around forever, but buried because once you learn about how light functions, you'll understand nearly all disease that manifests today.

+Adnan Mustafa You can get UVA from anywhere in the world in the morning, even under a cloudy sky still gives 70% of the normal amount. You also create dopamine bigtime with UVA at the same time, so you'll notice you feel ultra-awake after 3-5mins in morning sunlight. All it takes is around 5-10 mins to set circadian rhythm for the day based on the cloud conditions. Most people are already aware that Vitamin D is liberated from cholesterol (one hydrogen atom difference) with UVB+IR light too... so mid-day UVB+IR is also ultra beneficial for health as well not even considering the UVA benefits. Artificial lighting spikes high in blue-light and omits UV light, so it's foreign to our cells and tissues. It causes many problems over many years, especially if a person is avoiding the sun each day and/or blocking it with glasses and clothing.

It's interesting how our biology is so closely tied to the natural rhythm of the earth; how all life is orchestrated by the 24hr period that makes up the full rotation of the earth around its own axis. We were, indeed, made FOR this planet, BY this planet, and made OF this planet. I have confidence alien life will not survive here. We've earned our right to exist on this rock. We've learnt to cope with the many microbial life forms that could otherwise threaten our existence. We've evolved (in symbiosis) WITH this rock, to survive & thrive here........Does it then not make all it all the more illogical that we continue to threaten, maim, and destroy this rock -- not for survival, but for greed that does nothing to prolong our transcient individual existences?

It's certainly true that we should be doing our best to protect our precious planet - including conserving endangered species and combating climate change. Think about it. Think about your eyes, the human cameras, that adjust, focus, interpret, evaluate, and discern color automatically, naturally receiving and adjusting to light and distance. Think about the brain: how it thinks, functions, analyzes, retrieves and stores information, as well as distinguishes and categorizes information in a millionth of a second, all of this constantly. Think about the brain for a moment! This is the brain that made the automobile, the rocket ships, the boats, and so on. Think about the brain and who made that! How is it we say the airplane for example was created and yet the brain, something much more complex with many more purposeful functions came about by chance!! Think about it! Think about the heart. Think about how it pumps continuously for sixty or seventy years [taking in and discharging blood throughout the body] maintaining steady precision throughout the life of the person. Think about the kidneys and the liver and the various functions they perform. The purifying instruments of the body that perform hundreds of chemical analyses simultaneously and also control the level of toxicity in the content of the body. All of these are done automatically without us having to regulate that. Then consider all these systems coming together in 1 body working together! Think about it, who created that? Who has mastered their design and function? Who plans and regulates their function? Did Human beings do this? Is it co-incidence? No, of course not. Almighty God says: “Verily in the heavens and the earth are signs for the believers. And in your creation, and what He scattered of moving creatures are signs with people of sure faith,” Quran (45:3-4) Almighty God says: “We(God) will soon show them our signs in the universe and in their own souls, until it becomes quite clear to them that it is the Truth.” (Qur’an 41:53) Almighty God also says: “Allah(God) is He Who raised the heavens without any pillars you can see. Then He rose above the Throne. He subjected the sun and the moon each running for a term appointed. He regulates the affair, explaining the signs in detail that you may believe with certainty in the meeting of your Lord.” (Quran 13:2) Our purpose in this life is to recognize The Creator, to be grateful to Him, to worship Him, to surrender ourselves to Him and to obey the laws that He has determined for us. This all-encompassing worship is our purpose in life. You deserve to know the truth. So find out the truth of your existence today. For indeed, if you seek the Almighty, he will surely guide you to him in sha Allah! Start with Islam, the true religion religion of Almighty God. Peace.

i would like to ask... as normally i always sleep at 2am even though i lay on bed before 12pm and i will wake up at 7am... is it i considered to have insomnia? and is it the melatonin that my body produse is around 1-2 am? as from what i know the highest peak of melatonin secretion is before 12pm. and, i tent to compensate my sleep in the evening around 5pm... is it a normal thing happen to me?
@OxfordSparks

Hi +Nich Awa - we've asked Chris who helped make the animation, and he says, "it’s quite normal for sleep onset to happen later and later as we progress through adolescence and into early adulthood. This continues usually until around 21 years old. If you have a regular pattern, i.e. you fall asleep naturally at the same time most days and wake up naturally at the same time then probably the problem isn’t insomnia but a change in your biological clock. Insomnia patients typically struggle to sleep at any time, whereas those with a change in their biological clock only struggle to sleep when they try at the wrong time- i.e. going to bed before their biological clock is prepared for sleep. This can be perfectly normal. If it’s causing you distress or negatively impacting on your life then you should speak to your G.P." - hope that helps! ^Michaela

You're right - blind people can feel constantly jet lagged as their body is out of sync with external stimuli. A timely question, as it's discussed in our new podcast episode - Can you cure jet lag? - out today! kzbin.info/www/bejne/jGaueqSpa9d7g5Y
