I only got to play MvC2 when it came to PS2, and I only had one friend that liked to play fighting games with me. One day in like 2005 I was at an arcade and they had a MvC2 machine. I was playing, beating up the cpu, then this guy walks over and puts a quarter in. He absolutely wiped the floor with me like I had never played before. He squashed me and then walked away from the machine. 😂 I realized in that moment that I did not know how to play MvC2 lol I picked it up again on 360 and hoped online and got promptly squashed again! I'm still excited for the collection.

Mvc 2 Dr here. Helping out newbies. Air shots by Megacable do way more than grounded ones and you have better recovery. Cover your wolverine movement with mega man beam assist. Have a good strong anti air as a third character. And get good at combos and grabs. Cuz your team needs them. Good luck

I think a lot of people are looking at MVC2 from one lens and no other: strictly competitive. MVC2 is one of the most amazing fighting games I've ever played. I'm not 'good' at it in so far as someone who's going to be entering any tournaments or whatever. But the roster diversity is amazing from the casual perspective. This game is like Warhammer 40k. It's such a great beer and pretzels kind of fighter. Play with friends and shit and just have a good time with it, don't take it too seriously. It's when you try to make it competitive you see a lot of the strings and unrefined edges. Can it be played competitive? Duh, sure. Really, anything can. Doesn't mean it's exactly MEANT to be. If people want to play at that top level and play just the best few things and only face the best few things, more power to you. But if you just enjoy it as a game, I believe many folks will enjoy what MVC2 brings to the table. I love seeing the high level sets and the skill required to play at such a level. But I wont tarnish my enjoyment of the game by trying to be an actual part of that portion of players. Just ain't for me. Me and the homies just fucking around with our favorite shit, laughing and soaking in the crossover madness that is MVC2.

I thankfully learned all of the hard lessons with MvC2 back in day during the Xbox 360/PlayStation 3 re-release era. I started with Cammy/Iceman/Guile and ended with Storm/Sentinel/Cyclops. Playing MvC2 back then taught me an important lesson in playing fighting games: If you want to play to win, you *have* to play within the competitive limits of the game. Find a play style that works for you *within those limits* if you actually want to enjoy yourself. Thankfully, those limits are a lot broader in modern fighting games, but most old school games? Eh, not so much. I'd love to play as King in CvS2, but I'm not gonna put myself through that. I'll play her in KoF15, though!

I got to say... I was around and deeply into the FGC already when marvel 2, CVS 2, and 3rd strike came out. Becoming a dad and getting older means that I can't spend near as much time as I used to in the community but the positive there is these games are intensely nostalgic and bring back some of the happiest memories of my childhood. To see the incredible resurgence of these games because of capcom's re-release actually literally had me crying the first day that I saw how many of my subscribed creators were making multiple videos on these classic games and bringing everything back into the spotlight.

The amount of love the Marvel Collection is getting right now is nuts. Unfortunately, it DOES prove that... the love of DarkStalkers isn't as big as people would make you think, as the previous collection didn't really make as many waves. I hope CvS2 is able to also create a similar resurgence for CvS2. But honestly, the amount of joy the MvC Collection has brought me already has been immeasurable. Feeling that childlike nostalgia for sure as well... except... mine... isn't. Childlike nostalgia. More like... young adult... nostalgia. God I'm old.

One thing ppl should know about. Is this game has been out so long that we known certain teams don’t work as well. Yes there are low tier god players but they earned that title by understanding and playing the game for so long. If you just pick 3 characters you like, unfortunately that’s not always gona get you any results. This game is brutal. You need characters you like but that also work well together. Construction of your team is important so is the order and assist type. Basis to create a team. 1) point character can be any but ideally one that benefits from the other assists. 2) character that can ideally have a good extension assist (something to extend your combos or fill up the screen with like beams) 3) good anti air assist. And you can do well with by themselves. After that you can experiment and come up with diff systems, team compositions. But at least have that for starters.

MvC2 was made so long ago. We were downloading Real Media files to view matches that was like 360 pixels in height. LOL! There is almost no content back then for getting better at MvC2, especially because *I* didn't write an FAQ for it. I mean, for COTA, MSH, and XvSF, really the only documentation for those games these days are the FAQs that *I* wrote. And they are all still really good FAQs. Hahaha! But yeah, there's not a lot out there to help learn MvC2. Which might make a very interesting series of videos. Hmmmmm...

There's a lot of things they could have done. HOWEVER, I personally prefer having it as close to arcade as possible FOR THE HISTORY. I wouldn't be opposed to having an extra mode where they try to do some small balance stuff. But you'd have to be careful. A lot of what people love about these older games ARE the broken stuff. Hahaha! So if you wanted to balance this game, you'd have to be very careful. I personally would buff lower tier and leave most of the top tier alone, just so the top tier can keep playing the way that players have been playing them for nearly two decades.

I was hoping they would have a built-in ratio mode or custom lobbies that allow you to ban certain characters. I dont patching the game would be a good idea since the MVC2 loyalist have stuck by this game for over 20 years. So changing that legacy for new players who might not even stick with the game would only harm them in the long run. But have custom low tier lobbies and modes would've been good for people who want to avoid the meta stuff.

Also the bonus of being able to play XvSF finally outside of having Fightcade or Sega Saturn (with the 4 MB RAM card of course) that sold it for me. All the other titles are just the cherry on top

Biggest thing for this game is people to find groups of similar skilled players or those who want to play it without being sweaty so they can enjoy everything MVC2 has to offer. However, the scrub stompers having no chill will absolutely kill a lot of enthusiasm for MVC2 online play.

I remember in arcade back in the day, giving the good players a hard time with Jugg/Colossus/Hulk just because of the fact that they weren't used to not being able to juggle combo and being forced to block. I would do so much damage to them it would throw them off. But if I tried to be like them and juggle combo I would just lose. Without meter and without juggling, Magneto and Storm have to resort to cheese. Magneto will do the broken leg sweep and Storm will fly off screen and try to avoid you and build meter.

Back in the day when this came out I was only 4, so imagine my surprise to finding out my favorite characters didn't work. I was the fighting game player in my family and the only one. Here's some advice: Here are some easy teams that are top tier but can teach you other mechanics and help you understand the game: ScrubClops Sentinel-Y/Cable-B/Cyclops-B Or Cable-B/Sentinel-Y/Cyclops-B Play a brain dead zoner that's it. Use DHC when needed or when it's going to kill. TeamScrub (the team Chen was talking about with Captain Commando): Cable-B/Sentinel-Y/CapCom-B A few others I'd recommend once you get your feet wet: Team MSS Filth Gnasty plays this team and is making how to play MVC2: Magneto-A/Storm-A/Sentinel-A The Goat Himself Jwong team or Team Matrix: Storm-A/Sentinel-Y/Cyclops-B Also play ratio matches, for now play who you want and within your rank see what people are playing. If they're top tiering, you should too if they wait and see who you pick do ratio. There's an etitiqute to this game and if people see you picking not top tier characters and respect it awesome if not, fight fire with fire. Maxillian Dood, Jwong, Filth Gnasty, and most importantly THE MVC2 DISCORD share and offer resources that will help you play. Believe me my friend who usually washes me in every game for once I had the upper hand in this game. Have fun MAHVELING and if you want some beginner matches hmu or come by my stream!

The sad thing about CvS2 Sagat is that his s.HP is just as bad as his c.HP, but has more range. MvC2? No question: Cable with AHVB is going to kill everyone. 95% of players aren't going to get over that hump. Oh, and I know Team Scrub to be Cable/Storm/Cyclops.

I think competitively, the game is kinda fucked. That statement can be said about pretty much every single V.S fighter Capcom has ever made but LORD does this game take it to extremes. I'd honestly advocate against it and just tell folks to play casually and for fun. If they wanna get good, UMVC3 is a better and just as deep option. The pool of characters that you can be competitive with is deeper. X-Factor is the great nutty as fuck equalizer. It's also a more forgiving but just as frustrating (fuck Vergil) game overall. If folks are just curious and want to play friends or casually, then by all means. But on the competitive front, you get viable characters the size of half of Street Fighter II's roster and then a handful of functions. I question how this game still has a competitive scene.

It’s how older games worked. Most of the best games are horribly unbalanced. Super Turbo, 3rd Strike, etc. They didn’t have patches and they certainly didn’t know what they were doing as well as they do these days. However, the level of nuance between the existing competition worthy teams is amazing. Even though the majority of the characters won’t be able to make a good team, this game is far far far from sucking.

I play team devilcat (Felicia, bb hood, t bonne) and i beat god tier teams on the daily. It's definitely possible to play who you like and win at a high level of play. But for sure you are going to lose like 99% of the time unitl you break that barrier and get good.

Look for a team guide like MSP or Santhrax or Team Scrub. The wacky combos are mostly infinites with a setup, or helped by an assist into specific DHCs

At lower levels you can play whomever you want. If your goal is to be competitive, you gotta play meta. But the main thing is: the game is fun, even at the highest levels. There’s a reason this game was often compared to crack because it’s addicting as all hell. There’s a real visceral nature of the game that makes it so appealing.

In hindsight, ALL the old school games are trash because they were poorly balanced and had glitches that were allowed in tournaments. Out of all of them though, MvC2 reigns supreme. Its the only fighting game EVER that was so bad, it ended up being good lol.

@@UltraChenTV You know James, out of the big 3 that everyone played (MvC2, CvS2 & 3s), I can honestly say on MvC2 was "fun". I played tons of CvS2 at the arcade I worked at with my boss and other players in the scene and there was no fun tone had playing against Roll Canceling. And with 3s, Yun & Chun made half the cast (almost) unplayable. I do not miss these games lol.

Hahaha. Weirdly enough, Roll Canceling made CvS2 better. The problem is that you’re now forced into learning this really randomly difficult execution just to compete. But it really opened up the number of viable characters in the game. In the end, RCs actually made CvS2 have better variety. But of course, you’re absolutely welcome to think that that variety is really dumb because RCs are kinda stupid. LOL!

The true way to enjoy mvc2, is to accept, and embrace the brokenness of it all. Find, and steal cool tech from the games long life, use that knowledge to piece together more synergy. The reason the game is never boring, even if only a fraction of the cast can compete with the top tiers, is the amount of ways the same characters can be played. You see santhrax all the time, yet every santhrax player seems to be playing completely different. Look at the difference between sanford, neo, and desmond. All play the same team, all are completely different. The top tiers are top because they give you the freedom to do basically anything, and you're only capped by your own execution and skill.

Yeah it is what it is, everything he's saying is true, it almost echos Sanford's: "Pick a top tier", you simply won't survive in mvc2, if you don't pick the top or at the very least mid tiers. I mean in the collection, most people I ran into already either one and done me or rage quit, and yes I play the top tiers been doing this for over 2 decades blah blah, so you know, they just get frustrated and quit when I run over them with Magneto...that's just where the last 2 VS games are, the ones that count any way, mvc2 and mvc3, you get touched, you die, .....mvc2, it's essentially a 4 character game. I've said it so many times, but I'll say it here again, Capcom created "Marvel vs Capcom 2 New Age of Heroes" ..the community created "Marvel" , better known as "Mahval", the same game you say? .....maybe in it's essence but in terms of playing, those are two different games son!

It would be VERY dangerous to update MvC2. VERY. Although we know the game well enough that there would be a lot of experts out there who could do a good job of balancing the game, I just don't know if that's something people want. We know the game as it is so well. So like I've said in many places, if I balanced the game, I wouldn't touch top tier. Even my philosophy of just changing the results (lower damage, worse Oki, etc.) I don't think I'd do to MvC2. I'd let the top stay the top, and I would just tweak the bottom characters a bit more. That's all. And I wouldn't even be ambitious with them. I'd tweak them SO SLIGHTLY as to not shake up the meta too much. Again, the game is old. And we have to be careful rebalancing old games. It can VERY easily be frowned upon and really you ARE serving the people who still love the game more than trying to attract newcomers with a rebalancing, so changing up everything basically helps no one.

People don't PRETEND to love it. People DO love the game. However, like Smash, it's a game that you should play with people your own skill level or among like minded folks. If you're a competitive, skilled player then you're going to make your friends hate the game. if you're all just chilling out and playing on the weekends and playing whack teams for fun, the game has endless enjoyment and value. Regardless of someone's skill level, people can enjoy the top level play and soak in the absolute insanity the game allows by dedicated and skilled players.

Why would they fake it when it has so much? The issue is competitive is a pain to get into. But, local fun with friends and even arcade are a blast for me.

Funny listening to this and the comment on the characters. I never had the time to get into MvC2 and didn’t want to spend the money trying, but enjoyed watching people play in my local arcade when it came out in 2000. Back then seemed like the people I watched were always playing Strider, Captain Commando, Morrigan, Venom, Spider-Man, Cyclops, Hulk, and War Machine. Sounds like that’s changed a lot, at least for competitive play.
