If anyone's interested, there's a channel called Tasting History where he makes and tries all these types of ancient foods. He gave up a job offer at Disney for us, so i felt like I owed him a shoutout for his sacrifice.

I’ve heard Disney is horrific to work for anyway. They pay way too low of wages, employees work long hours, and if they aren’t perfect at all times they can be fired on the spot. He dodged a bullet, I’d say.

@@demarcusfaulkner7411 Systems and things that seemed forever can change. Feudalism, monarchy, and eventually, capitalism. At minimum, the current form of capitalism. Just like after WW2 and rise of communism there was massive shifts to a more social democratic order, which eventually shifted into a neoliberal order and the current ills of today (albeit there’s always been flaws) Social democracy can satiate most workers (think of how FDR in the US led to many socialists feeling that was an alternative) but the capitalists of today are too aggressive and unwilling in most nations, and so they’ll push workers until they go the extra mile. And even FDR was almost coup d'etat by a group of wealthy fascists, who made the mistake of reaching out to a general that was an anti-capitalist anti-imperialist, despite being the most decorated of his time, he knew first hand the evils of and being a gangster for capitalism (Smedley Butler is his name) “We live in capitalism. Its power seems inescapable. So did the divine right of kings. Any human power can be resisted and changed by human beings. Resistance and change often begin in art, and very often in our art, the art of words.” -Ursula K. Le Guin

@@hunterq4202 good point yet any system that is put in place by humans is going to be corrupt because human beings are corrupt. Truth is on some level human beings go for the bad guy. Not that we want him to win because ultimately if you look at it we push for the good guy to win. Yet at the same time this wouldn't be happening if human being didn't on some level want evil to happen. The greed of humans will always cause there to be rich people exceedingly rich and poor people.

it seems strange that it took the crusaders to introduce europe to cream..wouldn't that be a natural product known to any dairy farmer? they must have noticed it floating at the top of their milk? and it seems like cream itself wouldn't be able to make a journey back home from the crusades on ships i wonder if future humans would gag thinking of what we happily eat today... i'm glad i'm used used to our current foods.

Thing is when speaking about the people hunting for their own food, most monarchies of the middle ages outlawed hunting for anyone who wasn't part of the nobility and maybe of the clergy (but they had their own land for that if they wanted). People still did it but if they got caught they could very well be executed for it, which is pretty dissuasive

I hate sugar in meat dishes except one (it's rabbit with a sweet and sour sauce, very little sweetener, very much sour cream and mustard, lovely) - but meat and sugar is in zillion recipes, sugar is in marinades, there is glazed ham etc. So yes, many people love this combo. Fruit and meat happens even in my country, I only find it acceptable with apples or quinces but I know many who loves beef with canned sour cherries... And most sour cherries are quite sweet and typically more sugar is added when canned.

Fun fact: pasteies were so popular because they were easy to prepare for three meals. There was a variation with 'three pockets' that more or less were folded and sectioned off into breakfast, lunch, and dinner portions which could easily be broken off for each meals on the go. They were also handy because they were easy to carry in just cloth as the bread protected the contents inside and they were also good for using 'leftovers' as not to waste food. They were essentially ye olde Hot Pockets.

Not medieval times, but I read in an article a while ago, that like a century later in Prussia under Frederick I , who was famous and well known for his extravagant parties and festivities, there was a dish that was truly peculiar. It consisted of various kinds of poultry that were stuffed with various spices and then roasted directly over a fire, but the interesting part is that their intestines were intentionally not cleansed out. Instead the heat of the fire would cause the ... remains inside the intestines to liquify and dribble out, which would then be caught in a frying pan, and either fried itself or used as a sauce, because it tastes so 'spicy'.

The “Cockatris” is a demon from the ancient days. It was a creature with a rooster head, a snake body and wings. It spit fire. It was the ancient dragon.

Aside from undercooked and spoiled meat, meat pies don't sound that bad for you. Sure these people had tons of carbs and salts in their bodies but with all their physical labor, they probably worked off most of the carbs and calories.

Yes. Cookshops. These were prevalent up to the 19th century.

I was taught that Trenchers were commonly not eaten so that they could be given as alms to the poor, and that eating them was thus uncouth?

If we lived in those times most people would have no choice but to eat junk food.

Pottage did not always contain meat! The poor only put a small piece in for flavor if they could get a hold of one, otherwise it was just grains, herbs and vegetables as available seasonally. Accompanied by cheap bread with more chaff in it.

Makes you wonder if these people saw junk food in today's age. I'm pretty sure they wouldn't be able to handle it xD
