For the MSF equivalent in AUS they only ever mentioned this with slow speed maneuvers

Constantly told at MSF not to brake during a turn until you stood the bike up, but I've been doing it with no issues ever since. As long as you aren't slamming on the brake instantly and use progressive pressure, it's a piece of cake
@SummitCoyote9 ай бұрын
when I did my MSF course, they had us do both. stand the bike up and then brake, AND brake while standing the bike up.

With MSF - you have a total of 2 days in a parking lot. While I too am annoyed at the advice I strictly followed from that course, I suspect that the reason they teach it this way is that new riders tend to be harsh on the controls. It's only after practicing slow, progressive inputs that trail braking, stopping mid-turn, etc... become safe to do. I'm curious to find some more advanced courses and see what they teach.

When I took the MSF in 2020, there were two exercises about stopping in a turn. One was the old strategy (straighten the bike, then brake hard), but we also practiced the newer strategy (braking while turning). If was brief though, just one or two tries, then we moved on to the next exercise. In most situations, I think the newer strategy (braking while leaned over) is safer than the old strategy. For several reasons: (1) you brake earlier, that's always safer, because you don't have to brake as hard this way, and (2) the old strategy risks going wide.

Braking mid-corner still makes the bike want to straighten up and straighten out, though, so it isn't going to keep you from running wide if you go into a corner too hot and don't realize until you're already committed. The tendency.of the bike to want to straighten up and straighten out is also why you want to give yourself enough space between you and the car in front of you that you don't have to do any emergency maneuvering when they invariably do something stupid.

@@cen7ury This problem is easily solved with a little bit of practice. For the most part, the bike only stands up if the rider brakes abruptly (which isn't a good idea) but even then, it's easy to prevent the bike from standing up, just press the inside handlebar. It goes wrong when the rider has never practiced braking-mid-turn, waits too long to start braking, until it's almost too late, then the rider panics, and the bike stands up. Next, the rider blames this on "braking" instead of the actual cause "panic and not practicing".

@mhoeij What I had meant was hard braking. Sorry, I should have clarified that originally. Also, part of the problem is people's tendency to follow too closely and/or ride at a speed that is too fast for prevailing conditions and line of sight, which doesn't allow sufficient time to react with smooth inputs. That said, I think part of it also depends on the type of bike you ride. My CBR1000RR wants to straighten up and straighten out if I even let off the gas mid-corner, which has a lot to do with weight transfer and the huge difference in contact patch between the front and rear. A bike that wasn't built just to go as fast as possible may be more forgiving.

Thank you for this video. I like how you explain the methods and than show how to do them. Most videos out there just explain how to do it and never show it. I hope you make more teaching how to ride videos.

MSF just tells you that’s not something you need to worry about yet you’re there to learn the basics

This drives me nuts. I actually did a video where I discussed exactly this topic as well. It drives me nuts that the msf gets this so wrong. It also contributes to people going wide through corners because they are too scared to touch the brake and just plow straight off the road.

especially in FL old people are the worst. whenever I see a handicap tag driving dumb I just assume they became handicapped in a car wreck. They really should make them re-test yearly after 55 to keep their license This skill is sooo important. BUT when I took my MSF they had us do this...they did it two ways...stand it up then brake, or apply brakes while standing it up. It is part of the curriculum so I dont know who did yours...but they should have gone over this for sure. However I will say they do preach riding defensively and not going too fast for blind corners or your conditions (including traffic) and using lane position to keep yourself out of trouble in these situations which is infinitely more useful in most cases.

I got lucky in my msf course as they taught this. Both of my instructors were long time riders, which I think made the difference.

The MSF is for beginners. I mean I saw one person really have no feel for the bike and they have to train him/her in just 2 days. So they will tell you not to brake during mid turns because not everyone understands how to even operate each brake properly
@83osborne110 ай бұрын
We practiced that in my MSF course 2 years ago in NJ
@jimh206110 ай бұрын
In my MSF class the instructor had us doing some things similar to this. We would be stopped and take off and go around a sweeping corner and have us stop right in the middle of it. He said it wouldn't be on the test but wanted to show us this.
@cen7ury10 ай бұрын
Of course you can stop mid-corner when you're doing 15 mph and not tailgating. The MSF course I took didn't say that it's impossible to brake mid-corner, they just cautioned that the bike is going to want to straighten up and straighten out, so it may not keep you from running off the road if you go into a corner way too hot, and don't realize until mid-corner....so essentially the same thing you're teaching here. The most critical part of mid-corner braking, along with pretty much every other part of riding, is to maintain both a safe distance between you and the car ahead of you, ride at a reasonable speed for the current road conditions, weather, and line of sight, and just generally expect everyone around you to do the dumbest thing possible at any time. Anyways, keep the rubber side down, bud. Happy trails.
@ultimatederp50699 ай бұрын
It's nice that yours cautioned you that it will straighten mid turn, mine literally said "You should never brake during a turn because you don't have enough grip for both turning and braking at the same time." There was even a video of a guy saying, "straighten up first, then hit the brake."

I dont know if MSF course are diff per location but i remember while taking the course we are doin an Emergency brake while turning. my instructor were very knowledgeable coming from a background of supersport & motocross racer. Silver State motorcycle academy highly recommend them here In Northern Nevada ❤

Im not sure what MFS classes your friends are taking but the ones im familiar with all teach people how to stop in a turn. Maybe your state is mandating what's taught in the classes. Or MSF needs to come audit the classes in your area.

I guess I went to a good MSF course… The instructor spent almost the whole day on emergency breaking. In a straight line, in a turn. Also swerve and stop and swerve and go..
@mannyechaluce381410 ай бұрын
Same here :D for one, you cannot slam the front brakes while a bike is leaned over, physics will teach you a painful lesson if you do :D the only way to stop on a turn without crashing is to slowly stand it up while increasing brake pressure :D

They don't as they don't know and that puts the guys at risk on the road when they come out of the parking lot certification

The reason the MSF doesn’t teach beginners to stop mid is because the typical beginner will slam on the brakes which will cause them to either low side or high side What the MSF course should teach is how to stop mid turn like you’re trying to show here , not just avoid it completely at that level of riding. I’ve ridden with people who have just passed their MSF one and two and can’t hold a bike on an uphill or downhill, and don’t know how to make turns from a dead stop

ANOTHER LOAD OF BULL, SURE THE BIKE WILL TRY TO STAND UP IF YOU TOUCH THE BIKE MID TURN BUT IF YOU EXPLAIN TRAIL BRAKING FIRST, GIVE A PROPER DEMONSTRATION, THEN THEY COULD PRACTICE HOW TO OVERCOME THE GYROSCOPIC FORCES ACTING ON THE FRONT END WHEN EVER THEY ARE ON THE ROAD. AGAIN, A REASON YOU SHOULD NEVER GIVE ADVICE.
