Best explanation of how to use the ASA I’ve seen so far. Thanks,

Test road it the other week, it’s brilliant. There are a few tricks to it as well, as you are slowing down just touch the front brake and it will drop a gear for you. You can also get it into neutral by holding the gear leaver down. Was very interactive for me and the harder you road it the more engaging and dynamic it became. Ordered my new 1300 GSA with it 👍🏻

Taking the GAS ASA out tomorrow, this has been invaluable, cheers.

Thanks for the vid. It’s interesting to see how the once delicate clutch control for slow speed turns etc would now be done with the rear/front brake. If the sensitivity is as good then what one has gained is a bike that will tour effortlessly and a bike that will manage tracks effortlessly. The latter means no stalling at the worst moments of trying to find grip. There has to be a really big benefit to pay extra for this ASA.

Its funny how everyone always resists any new technology that comes along. Im sure there were similar complaints when we went from horses to cars and quills to typewriters.

Got it at the moment whilst my RT is in for a couple of minor issues. The GS ASA I’m on, has done nearly 1600miles. It’s not the smoothest change. I’m deffo ordering it on my next bike next year. However, I’ll be getting and adventure or the 1300RT. The GSA with ASA apparently (from YT reviews) is smoother and imperceptible when changing.

Very impressive system, but I can’t help feeling it’s a very technical solution searching for a problem. I think I’ll be keeping my 1250GS with its old fashioned clutch. Perhaps it’s my age! 😜

I think I'll join you on that one 😁, but I think its great that certain riders will now have access to the transportation method that loads of us enjoy.

Good video but I don’t think you really put the system to the test and did it justice. It’s a whole new learning. Engine mode selection is crucial. D+Road is very relaxed. D+Dynamic engine is for riding briskly and the manual mode is as close as you get to a proper quickshifter. Just my view after riding it. I only use the clutch on my 1250 at junctions and on hill starts etc, 95% of the time I don’t use the clutch. I’ve ridden for many years but like to hoof on, I’ve done 35k in 3 years on my 1250. So what have I done. Ordered a new one with ASA as I was so impressed 👍 16:05

Thanks for the input . Certainly not for me even in manual mode . Just didn’t rate it. Glad you got on with it . I can see the benefits as I demonstrated in the video . Spirited riding I just use my 1250’s QS. Enjoy the new bike 👍👍

I rode the ASA version this morning….I really didn’t like it for safety reasons. The bike barrels along in too high a gear approaching corners - in fact to make matters worse, the bike changes up a gear as you come off the throttle pre-corner and then changes down a gear mid corner!. This positively dangerous thing to do when riding in the wet or slippery conditions. The bike is fine in manual mode, but then there is no point having the expensive ASA option if you are just going to ride in manual mode! Sorry BMW , more work required before you will convert me.
@TwoGoTouring25 күн бұрын
There’s a whole new learning with ASA and you’re right in D and road mode it up shifts and keeps the revs low using the engine torque. But if the engine is in dynamic it holds the gears longer, revs out more and downshifts when you slack off coming into corners. Manual is manual and slow manoeuvres is easier. As I said, this is a whole new learning but is definitely a step forward, it’s all about the combination of selections you make depending on how you want to ride the bike. Cheers

I quite like the idea of it, not on a GS perhaps, but I'd have it on my RT (or my next RT) for touring. Basically you have a choice of Scooter mode, or Quickshift mode, I'd be ok with that. But, if its as clunky as you describe, that is a non-starter, that will likely just mean lots of complaints from new owners with ASA.

I guess we will have to see what new owners of these bikes report as the miles increase.

Love the video, sounds odd I know but I always end up watching even when it's a bike that's not really my thing! Glad to see you're doing well after the recent scare 👍 Random question I know, but have you recently traded in a Ford over here on the rock recently for something else?

Nice review Paul. I have read that BMW are at pains not to refer this as 'an automatic' which begs the question... what would it be registered as an auto or a manual? Could have licence implications for those with big scooter licences but have never bothered with a manual licence. Like you, its not for me but I'm all for choice.
@gsd32iАй бұрын
Semi-automatic is what i belive it is ....licence bit?no idea.....as you can manually change gear🙈Any way, off to France next week for a few days on the 1250 and will be using the clutch.😂

Spooky.. my new GS purchase is on pause while i reconsider the ASA. Took the same bike out from Mansell Collection but only had 30 mins which i dont think was enough and based on a lot of the positive reviews I've seen since I might need to try for a longer period.
@gsd32iАй бұрын
It’s a big decision, I’d recommend as much time as you can get.For me locally, it would be a no. It is a very different experience IMHO. Then you have to decide on the colour 😂 Oh when I got back on my non automatic GS1250 I stopped at the lights and then let the clutch out...still in gear, bike shot forward, legs came up ....fortunately didn't drop it, but whacked my shin on the cylinder head in the recovery phase. Looked a right muppet!!!!!!!

I bought a DCT ATAS after an extended test ride. I loved it. Takes a bit of getting used to but it was fabulous. Sold it to get a more friendly off road bike. Now have a 1250GS. I’ll be getting the ASA GS when it’s time to chop mine in. It’s the best of both worlds in my opinion.

I am considering it , as I have a left hand issue . Wondering if the clunking will improve with more running in completed .

Hi Andy, I would hope so! The demo bike only had a 100 miles on it so hopefully other dealers bikes for demo will have more miles and you can hear/feel what the gearbox is doing as it beds in. However, if it is a toss up between a clunky gearbox and being able to actually get back on a bike, then I guess I would put up with it....
