I like wraps and slings the most for keeping their legs proper and carrying them. I like the sling less during the newborn phase

Just go ahead and buy this. It has been a game changer for our baby who loves being held and looking around at everything. It fits my small, 5'4" skinny frame, and my husband's, 6'1" muscular frame. Of course we have to adjust it differently but both of us can wear it comfortably! Definitely worth the month. Washes easily, too!

I‘m so glad, that I had my child in Germany. Carrying a child facing away from the parent is highly discouraged and frowned upon - front facing carriers are actually only sold, when they are „international products“. And post natal care midwives help choosing and using a baby carrier. So I really didn’t learn anything new, but hearing the possible problems was quite interesting.

@@EmmaHubbard In my opinion good pre- and post-natal care (along with paid parental and even eight weeks of mandatory paid post-partum leave for mothers) are some of the reasons, why Germany has a lower maternal death rate than the USA and is just nicer to and better for pregnancy, parenthood and babies. Not all midwives do it themselves, but they tend to recommend experts if they can’t for whatever reason and even most shops and manufacturers (unless they are based outside of Germany) will tell you to always carry your child with its belly to your body.

I’ve been baby wearing my daughter for the first 7 month for every nap, and today I’m using the carrier for some work at home when she is sick, that’s so great! Back carrying is key after 1 year of age :)))) and I’m glad that she know sleeps in her own bed, my back does not hurt any more

I fell with my baby in a carrier and landed on my hands and knees able to save us both vs carrying a child where we would likely have both been badly injured. I think sometimes carriers are compared to prams which is obviously not a direct comparison when most people end up carrying small ones in their arms frequently.

Congrats on your pregnancy! If I might add another risk of improper baby wearing. I had a carrier which didn't position hips in the M position when facing outward and it cut off circulation in my baby's legs! I guess there was too much pressure on her vessels passing near the underwear line. Her feet would get greyish! I checked online to see if others had experienced the same thing and many have. Some have reported red spots appearing on baby's legs. I have now purchased the much more expensive but more supportive ergobaby omni carrier which supports baby's legs when facing outward (my baby likes looking out more than facing my chest). Haven't had the problem since.

Congratulations on the baby! I think it’s a shame that you’ve focused quite a lot on the negatives of babywearing. I don’t think you have consultants in Australia but we have them in the UK and we have spent lots of time training to do this. Could’ve been mentioned in the video. Can I suggest that you read ‘Why Carrying Matters?’ By Dr Rosie Knowles, she is a babywearing consultant and GP who also trains consultants and runs a sling library in Sheffield 😊

Hi Tracey thanks for sharing your knowledge and recommendation. As I mention in the video babywearing has lots of benefits and it is something I am very familiar with as I did with both of my children and will do again with my bub at the end of this year. As the purpose of this video was to talk about how to babywear safely to minimise risk and promote a baby’s development I needed to cover the potential concerns/issues which can occur when babywearing. This isn’t something all parents are aware of and raising awareness just ensures the baby and parents are safe when babywearing.

Close enough to kiss seems to be a do as we've always done but no explanation as to WHY
@ArtByKarenEHaley
@ArtByKarenEHaley 4 ай бұрын
Here were the reasons I learned for this part of the acronym. When your baby is close enough to kiss, the baby is not down so low as to be smothered by your breasts or chest, or the carrier. You can hear the baby breathing at that proximity. You're able to see the baby's airways and ensure they are not obstructed. And your lips can sense temperature more sensitively than your hands, so if you are concerned the baby is overheating or getting cold, you can kiss the baby's head and get an idea of how warm the baby is. Plus it's just nice to be able to give the baby some affection while your hands are busy.

@tmobz
@tmobz 2 жыл бұрын
There is no official research for time limits when baby is facing the parent in a sling, so long as baby is having all their needs met (such as changing nappy, feeding etc) it is worth noting that when baby is a newborn and in a sling they can be very sleepy and might even sleep through their feeding cues. Keep an eye on the last time you fed (bottle or breast/chest) gently take them out the sling and give them time to wake up before feeding! Happy babywearing! ( I am a babywearing consultant in the uk 😊)
@EmmaHubbard
@EmmaHubbard 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Monica glad you found the video helpful. Also congrats on the safe arrival of your little one! I hope you’re finding the newborn stage enjoyable and not too overwhelming. Currently there is no research which definitively states what the limit is on how long you should wear a baby. What’s important is that you meet their need as Tracey mentioned but also give them free time playing while lying on their back,side or tummy throughout the day. The free movement they get in these positions helps to develop their muscles strength, coordination etc. Basically variety in positions is key!

How old is your little one? (Carrying consultant in UK?)
@EmmaHubbard
@EmmaHubbard 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Ana this is a great question. In regards to optimal hip development the recommendation is to face them in towards you for the first 6 months. But bubs can tolerate facing in the other direction once they have good head control which happens at around 4 + months. I would just be aware that facing away from you is very tiring for bubs as they need to hold their head upright with minimal/no support. So you might find your baby cannot tolerate this position for long or you may notice their head falls forward in their chest or to the side and at this point you should get them out of the sling/wrap/carrier. Hope that helps!

African baby carrying is time tested and more beneficial to help the baby relax as well as interact with the environment safely. And it’s free! The baby attaches better, is naturally protected, safe and allows for multitasking for the guardian. Babies should be carried on the back, not the front. That’s unsafe and always looked unnatural and uncomfortable for the baby AND parent. Baby carriers never made sense to me and this just confirms it

Yes, but as you well mentioned it, it's still referred to as the "African way". Most westernized parents will rather be uncomfortable than carry a baby "the African way". Unless some magazines start recommending it. But that would require industry support first. Let's not miss the opportunity to make tons of money 😂

I lived in North Africa for 10 years and alot of women carry their babies on their back. I personally ( not african) found it easier for me to do certain things with baby on my back. Bit after having a baby I found I got more dizzy that way. I also found baby can breastfeed carried on the front. Personally I feel the front way is easier and more convenient for me and my baby. Doing housework I found baby on my back easier.... which makes sense since African women have long been very active outside the Home and in physical things... Western women have had more relaxed lives at home and with cars more accessible to them

Is back baby carry only for older children rather than newborns and infants? Assuming it's done with the same sling, how is it done safely without assistance?
@Phronesis7
@Phronesis7 Ай бұрын
@@dubmob151 It’s mostly for newborns and infants but you can still carry toddlers if you can do it safely. The beauty of the African method is that once you’ve been trained a few times, you know how to do it alone. You bend over and have the child lie on your back while you secure the cloth firmly around them. I was taught how in middle school and I was terrified the first few times, but it’s the absolute best thing coz to the baby it feels like being swaddled

I once saw someone wearing their baby and one of the baby's legs was completely purple from restricted blood flow. We carefully asked if everything was OK, and indeed it was NOT. That experience made me never want to use one of those-wrap around baby slings... Not only can the baby suffocate in them, but their circulation can EASILY be cut off. And especially if they're wrapped up tightly as Emma recommends... Terrifying.
