The muscle memory thing is absolutely insane. I got my bench up to 130kg for 4 sets of 8 reps. A personal best for me. When covid hit, since my dad was immuno-compromised i stopped going to the gym cold turkey. That was february. In october i went back, found a 24hr gym. Went like 2a.m. Taking ever precaution. I was benching 70kg 3 sets of 5. I was crazy upset. In less than 2 weeks, i was back to 130kg 4 sets of 8. Now, nearly a year later I’m benching 180kg 3 sets of 5. I of course train everything not just bench. But it’s a good motivator for me when i can see my progress there. So if you’ve been out of the gym for a while, get back in there and take back the work you put in. Trust me, it ain’t gone just yet.

I don’t get the hate on “calorie surplus here. You DEFINITELY need a calorie surplus to build muscle long-term. You will get effective recomposition during newbie gains at maintenance and maybe for a few months after that. But if you eat at maintenance forever… you will gain aaaa-ZERO weight by definition and then you’ll eventually reach 8-9% body fat and feel like shit and you’ll build 1/4 as much muscle as someone who trained in a small surplus over the same amount of time. I feel like Greg is just debating semantics because he’s saying that if you don’t feel good, eat more and raise your body fat percentage. Ehhh hem… that’s called a lean bulk. Coach has been promoting extra small surplus 30-150 Under 200 calories . Doesn’t like the word bulk calls it maingain instead when u reach your healthy body fat goal . A Lean bulk 200 surplus then creeps into 500 surplusu can get fat . He prefers u stay closer to maintenance cuz no one counts calories 💯%, but he says if u skinny eat more and if u fat slowly cut depends were u are on the spectrum when to Maingain .

@samuelbrown47643 жыл бұрын
Bulking can REALLY help skinny NATURAL lifters because it helps us build strength way more than if we’re at maintenance the whole time on 10-12% body fat. Strength building and progressive overload is EXTREMELY important when it comes to building muscle natural and reaching our genetic plateau. Greg doesn’t seem to understand the difference between a SLIGHT caloric surplus, and an EXTREME bulk and bear mode fat gain lmao. A small caloric deficit, especially with all the calories you’re burning from the physical exercise, and the heightened metabolism from muscle gain is not gonna make u fat. You’ll SLOWLY gain maybe 2 to 3% of extra body fat over 2 years. And you’re gonna get WAY better gains than trying to stay right at maintenance.

So let say your in a 300 calorie bulk, the body seeing that there is abundance of food, will probably use 150 calories for muscle building and the rest for body fat,

When will you stop demonizing reasonable caloric surpluses? 10% caloric surplus is perfect, and will definitely not make anyone fat in the long run. Anything below that is insanely difficult to measure accurately and you end up being in a deficit half the time.

Facts. I maybe gained a bit of muscle when I was in a cut but that were noobie gains. When I started bulking was when I started noticing reasonable gains. I did jump on a dirty bulk a bit later so I fcked it up but I am doing a normal lean bulk now.
@arthurmorgandegen3 жыл бұрын
10% calorie surplus is far better for building muscle than maingaining. Mike Israetel and MPMD both champion surplus eating for muscle gain then when you hit 15% - 17% BF (or when you start getting fluffy) then go on a small cut for a few weeks then repeat. Greg makes out like small cuts are so difficult when they aren't!

This is a great video. Good to know I’ve been following the right advice. Especially the one with working out no more than 5-6 days a week, which is usually my regular schedule. I admit I’ve always wanted to do the “no days off” 7 days a week routine but it’s just too taxing on the body especially if you’re putting in great effort each day. The “no days” off routine can be overrated at times

The 4-5 meals a day always confused me as in our culture (finland) it has always been the norm to me. Breakfast, Lunch, afternoon snack, Dinner and Before bed snack. Sure there are times we skip some but the ideal rythm has been taught to me since I was a little kid.

Greg. For the longest time the myth of bulking has made many overweight gym goers, like myself, who then suffered with the extra weight. One thing that you mentioned that I agree 100% is that a lot of people are overeating because they see their favorite bodybuilder eat 10 times a day, but never mention the amount of gear they are taking, or the fact they are in the 1% genetically.

@@JohnnyHellraiser I understand, but maingaining doesn’t require you to have shredded abs. He has bulked in the past and maintained and gained muscle.

@P1pis19903 жыл бұрын
I believe Greg is exaggerating a bit about the 10% thing. A man that need 2000 calories for maintenance, with 10% more he will just eat 2200 calories per day. Just how low above your maintenance do you have to be to gain as much lean muscle as possible;
@brienelwoodwashburn28393 жыл бұрын
Agreed. The other thing is that he acknowledged you’ll put on muscle much more rapidly in the beginning phase as a new lifter, but increased muscle synthesis will require increased calories, so for a new lifter it seems you’d want a surplus of at least 10%, if not 20%. Once your unable to synthesize muscle as rapidly then 5-10% would seem to make sense.

One year ago I was 170 pounds and about 18% body fat or so (laser eyes). Now still 170 and probably 13-15%BF. last year 7 days of cardio this year 4x/wk lift, 3x/wk cardio. ~2200 calories in both instances. Last year IF, this year 3 meals plus 2 snack one fruit one protein bar. Don't need extra calories to build muscle. Need patience as it builds slowly.

Hey Greg! I was wandering, when you want to gain muscle but you are obese, do you have to lose the weight and then gain the muscle or should you try gain the muscle during your weight loss?
@tom0097283 жыл бұрын
You will most likely build muscle while being in a deficit and losing body fat if you are currently obese. Once you are thin, it becomes much harder if not impossible to gain muscle in a deficit. Greg would suggest a 300-500 calorie deficit and start training, slowly progress to train harder than last time. If you try and drop the weight too fast, you will lose a lot of the muscle you currently have and prevent yourself from being able to build more while you lose weight.
@tatefandom26472 жыл бұрын
You gain during your weight loss. Continue eating 1 gram of protein per lb of the target body weight you are aiming for. And make sure you are in a calorific deficit. This is pulled from his videos ^^ good stuff ! Best of luck !

I’ve got a question. I’m a 14 yr old and I’ve been working out since I was 12. 90 lbs and 5 ft 2. I take a rest day on Sunday. should I gain weight because I know I need to hit puberty soon and I can’t be 90lbs for the rest of my life. How many calories should I add if any? I’m lean enough to see about 5/6 abs when I flex. I track my calories and I’m at maintenance. Looking for helpful info, thanks. Also he says about 20 sets/ body part per week. I do 24 and I feel like if I did less it wouldn’t be a lot. Ex: for chest I do 4 exercises for 3 sets each. 1-2 sets per exercise are to failure. I do that twice a week. I get sore but I’m usually fully recovered by the next time I train that body part.

Hi first of all you are 14 years old eat surplus of 200-500 and make sure you don't get too fat..your growth hormone can differ by how much fat you are which might impact your height in long-run but not significant enough.. eat quality food you don't need to train 24 sets per week trust me....focus on proper form and train them around 12-18 hard sets .. intensity over volume..super high volumes will fatigue your cns which will impede performance if you don't take deload frequently..and also you are young decrease some volume and play some sport or do some kind of atheltic activity.. you are too lean may be gain some weight til around 15bf%
