This reminds me of when Dave Chapelle came to Toronto 15 years ago and my friend and I wanted a photo with him. He looked at us and said "What's up I'm Dave, how are you guys doing?" This began a 30-40 minute conversation about life and all kinds of stuff. At the end I didn't even want a photo cause it felt weird so we just shook hands and said see ya Dave. It made me realize he was just a funny guy who did comedy for a living and happen to be famous.

That's what I love about these videos. Unlike talk show interviews, the actors aren't trying to play to the camera, or trying to sell anything. They are talking about real experiences and thoughts, and more importantly trying to be themselves instead of a portrayal of themselves.

Maron and Howard Stern have a way of making people comfortable enough to relax. Sometimes the person interviewed will say "nobody's asked me that before" or " I've never told anyone that before". That's gold.

That line - "nobody wants you to be real, they just want a photo" hit me so hard. Everyone talks about how fake celebrities can be but deep down that's what most people seem to actually want. They don't want a real human person, they just want a larger than life artifice. Something they can take a selfie with and post on instagram to boost their own self esteem. As bleak as that must be for the celebrity, it says something even bleaker about the influence of celebrity on society as a whole.

I think a bigger theme of his story was the self centered approach of the students. They want to be able to post a picture with a celebrity and tell people they met him. He is entirely an object in those interactions. It's why the culture around selfies is so creepy.

And I'm not surprised at all these college kids asked him few questions, they were probably afraid to appear stupid before Ethan and/or their classmates.

It started when i was in college just after the movie Reality Bites. He acted in that movie, directed a music video for it, then a few years later wrote a book. He continued to act but then started to direct movies and write screenplays. This guy does it all & i remember reading a Rolling Stone article about him back in '95 about his heroes. They were actors, writers and directors of the 60's & 70's. I have to say now over 20 years later I think he is like some of them.

me too and its funny because you think can a film really do that but it did those films stuck in my head for so many reasons. maybe its that its the most real relationship has felt in film in the sense that your experiencing it in real time and thier expressing all the questions and dreams and beliefs that you have but maybe you havent got there yet or maybe you just havent had a conversation with someone you care about like that or maybe a conversation you care about to care about a person like that. theres that idea that this paralel universe did occur cause here they are 9 years later. Also the reality that there is no other jesse and celene no other people to be these people especially considering they wrote it, or maybe its that i just relate so much to both of them. Ethan feels to me like family now like i love him hes a genius and yet i can see hes human i can see his flaws and they are just as good as the rest. He feels so familiar to me but he is a stranger i dont know shit about him and yet i might know more about him than people i actually do know just from his work and from his interviews. I dont know everyone goes off about the godfather, coppolas a household name because of it , linklater is surely one in the same. people have a hard time with overly romantic films but i think these films are us trying to figure it out love believing it knowing it having no fucking idea except that this connection these moments are real you know every second is savoured.

thelonious monk All the yes! I saw Before Sunset first and thought it was a standalone with a really good flashback at the beginning. At the time, when I first watched it, when Celine is talking about how none of her relationships have any real meaning to them, because she gave all of her soul and romanticism in that night. And that her boyfriends get married after her, I felt that intensely. Like no one would love me. (in a very loving relationship now though) but it's just such a compelling, real, visceral journey the two of them go on and they do grow and change and ilovethemsomuch. Shame on those students who didn't want to ask him anything. I would have at least asked about the process of becoming/writing Jesse and Celine and told him that they made me believe in love. I also would have wanted a picture/ told him where I think Celine and Jesse are 9 years on.

Haahaa i also watched before sunset first and got really giddy upon realising how much i liked it that there was one before it, though you know i had to check i wasnt sure either. i think id only had that connection at the time with friends so to see two people have that romantic connection and have that it felt like the best insight into relationships for a teenager. those square ass film students what nobs, i think if any of them really cared about what they are doing that they would have spoken up maybe their shy or just as ethan says detached, unable to see beyond the fame and the desire to show someone off to your buddies. i dont know i think id want to remember the moment rather than get a pic because at least then you have a few more seconds that arent posing for a shot, then again proximity is always good. im glad your in a loving relationship, that bit rung so true for me too though i am still very single not that i could be in a relationship right now which is probably why i was watching that film yesterday and came to watch an ethan hawke interview and now im back where i started fantasising about Ethan Hawke. i dont know maybe its that actors lifes are so weird and different from ours and you think their brains work differently you can not possibly put yourself in their shoes but i get those two more than the rest, they make sense to me, they remind me of people i know and love. there is a great interview on shakespeare with liev shrieber and ethan thats worth checking out.

thelonious monk We're completely on the same page. I think what they've taught us is that love is real but it's also a lot of work. The beginning can be surreal and encompassing that you feel like your in a dream state and you may never find it again, not in the same way. But you can have a deep, soul-connecting relationship when it's right. I don't believe it has to always be a sexual relationship. But it still takes work. One of my favorite scenes is in the 3rd movie when they are eating lunch with the other couples and they are all talking about their experiences of love. Each one as real as the next but so different. The young couple- together through technology (a nod to 1995 Celine and Jesse who didn't have technology to find each other, but were fated to meet anyways), the middle-aged couple who were interested in how people interact with each other and completely in love and happy as they were, the old woman who tries to remember the face of her passed lover, the old man who loves his wife dearly but lives separate life from her because their love doesn't mean they own each other. Then Jesse and Celine who at 41 are still working out what it means to be parents/step-parents, working/passions and still coming to terms with the portrayal of their love in Jesse's books. Are they still those lovers? How are they growing (apart)? Is a relationship worth it? IT'S SUCH A BRILLIANT SERIES! I would love to spend hours talking to Ethan Hawke (Julie Delpy, and Richard Linklater) about those movies, and Boyhood.

The only reason any of us would want a picture is to increase some perceived value of our lives, specifically through social media and our social standing. We want to be liked, admired, cherished, loved - by everyone, which is not necessarily a bad thing, but we just go about it in the wrong way. In the perfect world, we would all be our true selves and everyone would accept and like us the way we are, thus eliminating the need to raise our social value. We can all start today by accepting who we are and thriving in that, regardless of what others think, and in turn we can start to accept those around us in the same way.

"What No One Told Ethan Hawke About Being Famous" - Reading this title, I was pretty confident the "thing noone told him" would be something I have heard several times already in other interviews with other people. I was not ready for the depth of the idea of "never making first impression ever again". I am not overstating one bit when I say there isn't a single interviewer in the world (that I know of) that would come even close to this depth in these interviews. It's a whole other level. People compliment the guys that does the interviews with Hot Chicken Wings for being well prepared and having great question, but I have never heard an actual personal thought in any of those interviews. And now I'm here at Ethan Hawke, I just finished watching Bo Burnham, and I'm like ... THIS is what the word "interview" mean. I want to hear the ideas and thoughts of these people that I find interesting, and I have never heard them anywhere else like I've heard them on this channel.

The isolation of celebrity is an interesting phenomenon. I attended a book launch by Ethan Hawke in Cambridge, MA (Harvard Bookstore/Brattle Theatre) when he had just written "Rules for a Knight" as an offering for his own young kids. He spoke beautifully and affectionately of his wife and family and was generous with his time in answering questions from the Cambridge crowd (the event was "booked" out with those who had bought "signed" copies, as I did). I have always really liked Ethan Hawke as an actor, from Explorers, especially in Dead Poets Society right through to the present precisely because of who he really seems to be beyond his celebrity: real, funny, modest, balanced. I wonder if his first real acting experience as a young adult (with Peter Weir directing in "Dead Poets Society", Robin Williams as an older inspiration and Robert Sean Leonard as a colleague and then life-long buddy might have had an effect - he says that it did). Once (I am a reasonably well-known classical musician/recording artist and owner of a CD label) I had an unexpected encounter with mainstream celebrity that illustrates what Ethan Hawke is saying here. I was in our recording studio in Roslindale, MA, arranging copies of our latest release (one of my own in a complete set of Bach keyboard works - a big project) onto shelves when in walked an unusual looking group of folks, the leader a shortish guy in leather jacket, sunglasses: I thought he looked a bit like Mick Jagger's shorter twin, but I didn't recognize him. We got to talking; he was warm, funny, knowledgeable, unpretentious: he and his band wanted to try this studio and he asked if I had known anyone who recorded there. I replied: "I have, myself, quite recently". "So, you're a recording artist?". "Yes", I replied, but in "classical" music. He then offered that his dad was a huge fan of Bach & Debussy (it spurred his own early interest in music) and he wanted to know if he could buy a copy of my latest CD (it was Bach: this was in 2001). I gave him a copy and he was grateful; he then asked if I could sign it for him. I laughed at this and replied "Sure, but it won't increase its value at all". He then asked if I would sign it to him "personally". I thought: "this is a bit weird", but acquiesced, and dedicated the CD "to Steven". All this time the young twenty-somethings who shared our office space were staring fixedly on the visitor (certainly not at me)! After the group had left I said to them: "What were you staring at?" And they replied: "You have no idea who that was, do you,?" And, indeed, I didn't. It was Steven Tyler and the band members were Aerosmith, just come in to check out our space. I think he was totally thrilled that there was one person on the planet who had no idea who he was; it seemed to extend our conversation that he enjoyed anonymity, at least for a little while. Ah, the isolation of celebrity. I think Ethan Hawke is a fine and thoughtful actor/artist; a person of substance and a wonderful human being, from all the interviews I've seen with him. I'd love to know him!

I used to work PT as a security guard at the airport. One summer afternoon, Mr. Hawke arrived on an international flight with his family, in order to spend time at their cottage. He wanted to know where the car rental agencies were and approached me for assistance. Of course, l realized who he was (as I'm a fan), but didn't let on and let him enjoy not being pestered while in public with his wife and kids. I gave him his directions, smiled and welcomed him to Nova Scotia, just like a regular guy. Just like he says in the video, they're people too and l wouldn't want his fame for anything. I hope they all had a good vacation.

That’s so true: about isolation and fame. One thing that he didn’t mention is how you have to be able to discern subtext. How when you’re famous everyone wants something from you and you have to be able to interpret things differently, like it’s a different language.

This guy is a such a good interviewer. Lays back a bit but when he interjects, it's not self-promoting but a valid point that moves the interview along to a better place. Reminds of Johnny Carson in the way he would tweak the interview but not place himself at center.

When I was in high school I was always super quiet and then I was doing these spot on voice impressions and there were so many people surrounding me loving it so much , felt good for a moment... then it kinda started becoming a daily request for them and after a while I kinda stopped doing them cuz the attention was eating away my privacy and made me reflect on the whole reason why all the attention was so easy and it didn't really make me fulfilled. That's when I said to myself " Being famous?? I don't know if I could do this everyday..." Fulfillment comes from within... and not from External things 💯 so happy I learned this early

He was sensational in Reality Bites...so sarcastic, intense in it. He has been in a lot of amazing movies. He has such talent in front and behind the camera. This is a must see interview!
