Say what you want about Paula's Choice, but like you said, their products work, and they recycle packaging. Also, their customer service is impeccable. I sent them an email to ask for suggestions for one of my loved ones who has been battling cancer and they sent over $150 worth of free product directly to her. I've never seen another brand do something like that.

Here’s the thing with the packaging & rebranding aspect , they are involved with Teracycle , you can send your bottles back for free and they recycle ♻️ and repurpose them . The packaging is more costly because it’s now 100% recyclable and that costs more , hence the price increase . 😉😷

I have been using Paula’s Choice products since they debuted in 1994. I am 61. Generally people think I am 50. I attribute this to using PC skin care and religious use of sunscreen. Worth the money to me. Customer service is wonderful. Recently they discontinued a lip balm wth spf. When I asked about this, they explained that they could not source a critical ingredient any longer so that led to the product being discontinued. They then recommended a competitor’s product to replace it. I will continue to use these products as long as they are available. I hope the pandemic doesn’t put an end to them.

Paula Begoun is the pioneer in getting women help in making smart choices. I’m 59. So I, like her Product line, am, as you said, “really really old.” So I have a different take. She helped me and a lot of women before internet and google and young youtube influencers. Her books and her passion were very radical for their time. And she called herself a cop. But how different is that from drop that brand/use-this-dupe, ingredient call-outs, “this isn’t vegan,” “this isn’t clean,” and the shading of entire lines, as well as lots of ageist dismissal of women trying to get the info they used to get from Paula’s books from KZbin videos produced by people who think 30 is old. Or (gasp) 40. (They’re not old. You just don’t know that yet. So prepare to be pleasantly surprised.). I saved a ton of money right away, when I read her books, and I learned about the dangers of sun damage and the advantages of simple, drugstore-priced products with very few ingredients. Sound familiar? I hope I look as good as her at 66. I hope I have her poise and her confidence and her authority. And when your young viewers get as old as me, Botox might not seem outrageous. It’s a personal choice. And finally, we should all be so lucky to feel free enough to write books about kissing. At any age. Or do I, given my ancientness, need to fear young kissing cops?
@michmash7888

LOL. I’m 52, guess I’m really old too. I had the Blue Eyeshadow and Cosmetics Counter books, and I agree, they were a game changer. Younger people don’t realize that when we were kids, it was hard to learn about makeup...if you were lucky enough to have the money and access, you could make an appointment with the makeup counter lady at Estée Lauder. Or the Mary Kay lessons. Either way, you were going to walk away purchasing 4 or 5 products. And you still didn’t know anything useful about ingredients or formulations outside of their brand. I am glad I found Paula (and her preaching about SPF) when I was young!

You bet!! I’ve been interested in skincare since I was 21 (yes decades) and Paula was one of the pioneers to talk about the ingredients ! Also a woman named Zia Wesley Hosford who founded Zia Cosmetics that sold at health food stores but I think it has since folded. I actually interviewed her as a young journalist:-!) she was a hairstylist who started investigating skincare products and she helped get labeling of ingredients on skincare products. Labels weren’t always there girls!! Women had to take the companies claims at face value and didn’t have a clue what the products contained!! Cracks me up when these influencers criticize people who’ve worked hard and gained knowledge for years when all they do is make cute videos and reel in loads of money!!!

To be entirely honest, having bought several “high end” skin care brands (such as drunk elephant) and having horrible experiences with them, I did not find PC’s products to be overly expensive. ESPECIALLY considering they have sales ALL THE TIME (regularly they offer 20% off) and provide such detailed information about their products. I have tried several things from them and their 2% BHA exfoliant is the only thing besides very powerful Benzoyl Peroxide creams that has had a noticeable effect on my black heads. In the end, you should do your own research and buy what makes you comfortable, but I have had very positive experiences with this brand.

That's definitely true, however I always think that if a brand is able to do discounts that often it means that their production costs are a lot lower as they still need to be able to cover all costs even with the discounted prices. That's why I'm also super annoyed by brands who offer tons of discount codes to influencers, because they must have incredibly high profit margins if they can basically have all of their products sold on a discounted price.

I owe her for giving me the knowledge to decipher ingredient lists and make the right choices. I had never heard of AHA or BHA before reading her book in the 1990s and she taught me how to build a skincare routine. Although I don't use PC products exclusively all of my choices are based on the knowledge she passed on so I'm very grateful. Exactly. I found Paula’s Blue Eyeshadow & Cosmetic Counter books waaaaay back. So glad I did...it was a game changer. It was empowering to know about the ingredients and what types of products to look for. And 30 years later, after wearing daily SPF and using gentle cleansers, I think my skin looks pretty darn good! (Do you remember when it was almost impossible to find her favorite cleanser Cetaphil? I remember when you had to ask the pharmacist to get it off their back shelf for you!) I used to use some PC products, but there’s so many good (and cheaper) things in the drugstore now.

I’ve learned so much about ingredients and skincare from Paula’s Choice. Yes they’re on the middle-upper end price wise. BUT they offer great sales to their loyal customers. Also, they’re definitely not luxury prices. I love how transparent they are with the ingredients lists. PC’s products have changed and transformed the health of my skin.

I've been a lover of PC for 7 years now and their prices did go up slightly BUUUUUUTTTTT 1. They literally have crazy sales (I'm talking 20% off each month and they add in extra products sometimes) 2. Free shipping all year long and is still far cheaper than most popular brands. 3. It works! In regards to the acquisition and kissing books, who cares? 4. Eye cream. They've done social posts and literally talk about how eye cream isn't necessary but if you want to use it they have compact versions so they actually haven't strayed from Paula's original thoughts at all. 5. They have incredible customer service. I have never seen brand care so much about getting me the right products for my skin type. They give you free consultations with an expert even!! I'm clearly a fan but this video has no real tea as you can see from the comments

That's great Nat. But I really really wanted to try this brand so badly and have many times tried to order this from Canada and to be honest I am so upset at them for not ever letting me try to order just one or two products on their own without forcing me to subscribe to their forced only monthly or every couple of months payment plan option. That really turned me off. I don't like being forced to subscribe and be forced to pay for only monthly or every 2 or 3rd monthly delivery options when it's already expensive for me and worse for Canadians ordering with converted money and shipping by only choosing to be stuck with monthly orders. I've tried other routes but I refuse to order from Amazon cause I've also had bad experiences with them at times and they treat their employees so cruel. So I've given up on them. I'm sure it is easy in the U.S. to get but not in Canada. I'd rather stick to my Inkey List or Ordinary instead.

I just want to say I really appreciate how you can still speak so positively about brands even when they don't think PR is being done well. It seems like so many KZbinrs nowadays feel like they're entitled to unlimited free product because of their influencer status, and I find those people hard to trust. Are they actually recommending the products that work best or are they recommending the companies who send them the most free stuff? Knowing you had a negative experience with the PR team but also recognize that that has little impact on what ordinary consumers are looking for in their skincare is refreshing.

My mother and I have been loyalists to the PC skincare company for decades and decades. All of her products are evidence-based and formulated in alignment with the most recent published research findings. Plus, I never have to worry about trying to consciously circumvent fragrance, denatured alcohol, essential oils, or other skin irritants because her entire product line is formulated without these ingredients. It can be exhausting trying to find skincare products that consistently avoid all of these skin irritants, but with PC, I never have to worry. Her company is truly brilliant.

Then either the resist 10% AHa toner or clear exfoliating solution with 2% salicylic acid. Sometimes I use the 8% AHA gel exfoliant instead. Next the clear clearing treatment with benzoyl peroxide followed by a 10% benzoyl peroxide from BIBA Los Angeles. Start at the 2.5% and work your way up. I’m slamming my face with a crap ton of benzoyl peroxide. After all that I then use the products from Chemist confessions on Instagram. I do two pumps of Aquafix hydrating water gel mixed with a few drops of the better oil. After schmearing that in I top it all off with Paula’s choice omega + complex moisturizer. It’s takes dedication and they always have sales. I have the boosters and the C from Paula’s which I mix up sometimes. Other products do too, so they get the best rating as well.

Being sold to a cosmetic conglomerate who then just hike up the prices and screw with the formulations and quantities/packaging. So many "honest" skincare companies go this way because the original owners want one thing at the end of the day and that's MONEY!!! Why else would founders of companies like Paula's Choice and The Ordinary just one day think "f*ck it, I'll sell off my brand to some dirty big cosmetics conglomerate for a sh*t load of money???? I have since ditched it and gone back to the ordinary and my skin is slowly getting better. I know I’m probably an outlier here but thought it was worth noting (I have sensitive, acne prone Caucasian skin, used paulas choice for 3 months)

I agree with everything you said and as a long time customer of PC I have the same comments. However, I will always have respect for the brand and for Paula. I feel like she was there for me personally in the 90s with great SPF, BHA and cleansers and a ton of information about skin that I could not get anywhere else. I know it's hard to appreciate it today with all the reviews and great products in all price ranges. Thanks to Paula I have pretty much perfect skin in my upper forties.

My journey with skincare started when I was 18 and now I’m 25. Throughout seven years, I’ve tried countless brands, from drugstore to very high end, from US, EU, to Asian beauty brands. I have always struggled with acne and post-inflammatory pigmentation, and honestly, my skin loves PC actives the best. Every time I come back to PC actives, my acne stops and I get a healthy glow, smooth texture, and less visible pores. The prices are not exorbitant, which I like. Currently I’m in love with their trio 2% BHA + 10% Niacinamide + 10% Azelaic. I mostly like their active stuff though, so other things like sunscreen, moisturizer, essence, etc., I look somewhere else. I am still mad that they discontinued the vitamin C spot treatment that came in a small aluminum tube though haha. I loveee that product and it faded my spot like no other. Maybe they repackaged it but I don’t know 🤷‍♂️

To my knowledge, Paula still helps with formulating some products as well as new ideas for products. Regarding Beautypedia, the Paula's Choice products on that site are reviewed by a third party. That's what I was told the last time I asked. The reviews on the site as a whole, however, are incredibly inconsistent when it comes to other brands.

If you believe her products are reviewed by a 3rd party I have some ocean front property in Arizona I'd like to sell you. The conflict of interest between Beautypedia and her skincare line is so transparent as to be ridiculous. All her products are great and everybody else's is trash, until you start reading the actual consumer's reviews. Because of this, I will never buy any of her products. When the skincare line launched, Beautypedia should have been forced to close due to the conflict of interest.

@@sarasommers3588 so as I stated in my comment, that's what they - the company - said the last time I asked and then subsequently went on to point out the reviews are inconsistent. How does that warrant your snarky comment? 😆

I love Paulas Choice and been using it since late 90s! The price did def go up and I notice the fake review so I read them with a grain of salt and do my own ingredients research. There's always promo and code you use to do bulk buying. 🤪 or I alternate with cheaper ordinary options.

Cassandra -- thank you sooooo much for this video. I've been using Paula's Choice since the 90's and have been wondering WTH is going on, especially about the addition of eye cream to the line. Paula ALWAYS said it wasn't necessary. Also noticed the increase in price -- up to $10 more on some products!! 😡 I still use the 8% AHA gel, but hardly anything else. Thanks for solving the mystery!! LUV your channel!! ❤️

According to inflation calculator $25 in 1994 had the same value as $44.37 in 2021. You made an excellent point about skincare prices going up same as the cost of living going up since 1994.

I absolutely love Paula's Choice. Their products actually do have better ingredients than a lot of products in the same genre. They are mid-range pricing to be honest and always have sales with huge discounts when signed up for their promotional email. From what I've seen and when I've purchased items, I was able to get up to 30% off + free gift. Also, they have the best customer service! One purchase recently the code for free gift with purchase applied when purchased but didn't apply when I got the confirmation email. I emailed them and they gave me $29 store credit! Store credit for not getting free gift with purchase! I was shocked! No way did I expect that, I would have been chill with a tiny sample! I've bought 4 separate orders now and have a line of products. They have so many choices and tailored by skin type and skin issues. They have experts that can help guide you as well as a plethora of videos explaining products and how to use them! I'm in love. My skin is thanking me. This is now Naomi's Choice too LOL (Sorry, had to say that Dad joke)

Paula’s choice products are literally the best products for skin that are out there and quite affordable compared to many brands that do nothing but irritate the skin. ALSO, not true about beautypedia, there are TONS of 5 star reviews for products that are not PC. PC products, her philosophy, her books saved my skin. I only wish I found her sooner 💔

This video really bummed me out. I've been using PC products since the beginning and they really worked for me. The past year or so I've gotten sucked into trying other brands and medical grade skincare but PC will always be my HG. I had no idea the company sold or that they raised the prices. After years of paying affordable prices I don't think I could bring myself to pay $75. I wish I would have stocked up.

I had her 1994 edition book. I remember she recommended baking soda scrub and hydrogen peroxide for acne , I wonder if she still does? And benzoyl peroxide could oxidize skin and age it. And I think I remember her saying mineral oil wasn't bad but just sat on the skin and now I see some of her reviews saying it's ok and holds moisture to the skin. I think Paula's Choice should of been what The Ordinary is. skin care with good ingredients and reasonably priced. I didn't know she sold the company... I emailed her about 15 years ago and I believe it was her that wrote back the next day so she got my thumbs up for being someone that answered their own email.

Congrats on 1 MILLION!! I do love the 2% AHA/BHA from paulas choice and I always thought they were highly regarded and under rated. I just started using the liquid exfoliant and I really really like it. I also bought the eye cream lol. I like the texture and it seems to be keeping fine lines at bay. I also got the Weightless body treatment 2% BHA. So far I’m happy with my purchases. I get most of my other skin care from The Ordinary.

We can't blame PC brand for following the money. They had damn good products for a long time, but only recently did the products get recognition, and, joined with Paula's point in her life where people normally retire, it makes sense why the brand is going in a different direction taking advantage of the recognition, raising prices, etc. I'm grateful they haven't changed the formula of old products or discontinue too many of them with the change.

I never knew any of this either…I did always wonder why looking up ingredients and products, PC would always come up, always be recommended and you’d think that they wrote the dictionary for modern skincare. Their site gives some knowledge but some of it not current and for the purpose of allowing them to say, this ingredient is bad, here are some of our products that don’t have this while at the same time FUD for competitors who do have it (so many brands, many with great products overall, use perfume or essential oils…some days or moods I’m fine with it, I have no reaction, but PC makes you really fear it…). The brand products are always on “sale” (which seems sale is just regular price) and seem more like deluxe trial sizes. I’ve tried PC when the BHA was the older white bottle and tried it when it rebranded. Everyone says it’s their HG and for me it just isn’t because as a toner it doesn’t play well with other actives (can’t mix BHA with A LOT of things). I actually prefer Anua heartleaf toner to PC BHA (there’s other heartleaf toners/serums but I like the simple ones; the others have added actives that may conflict with other skincare). My microbiome does better with just once weekly BHA mask, PTR blackhead mask, biore pore strip and 10% glycolic toner, each only once weekly, so I can just focus on barrier reinforcing actives mostly. Their SPF is ok but like the rest of their products, it’s just not my fav, but didn’t make me worse. I really also feel like a lot of skincare vloggers basically just regurgitate research cited from PC (like Hyram, the person behind great barrier relief that Hyram is always promoting). His skincare line packaging even looks like the new PC rebrand. The make out books are hilarious. People seem upset about these videos you make but honestly I appreciate them because…who knew? Not me. I try to research brands to know enough to be informed & I appreciate when people still can tell me stuff I missed/didn’t know. I try buying PC every 3 years to try because it’s so hyped, I think…am I missing out on something? But last year was my last year of doing that, just disappointment really. Skincare is different for all.
