Following a humiliating 8-2 defeat to Bayern Munich in the Champions League, Barcelona sacked manager Quique Setien and terminated the contract of their sporting director Eric Abidal.
In Setien's place, Barca have appointed the Netherlands boss Ronald Koeman, who was most recently sacked by Everton within the club game, with the Toffees in a relegation scrap despite significant investment.
As such, some people are wondering why Barcelona's unpopular president Josep Bartomeu has appointed Koeman, what impact it might have on where Lionel Messi plays next season, and what it means for the future of the La Liga giants.
In this video, HITC Sevens examines all of those questions, and attempts to understand what Barcelona's rationale might be.

La masia has become a money spinner where youth are selected based on how much they can bring in as admission fees yes unofficially... the world isnt as straightforward as it seems, it has a lot of behind the scenes and ulterior motives which we good people dont know or has no idea about.. there is a whole dark world there ...

We haven't been the same since guardiola left. We've been playing without the necessary intensity since 2016, Luis Enrique tried but the players just kept complaining. It has led to this. They LOVED Valverde with him giving them 4 days off weekly and pique sleeping only 4 hours. Lockeroom controlling sporting things. When L. Enrique was coach and we lost it was s his fault according to players. With Valverde when we lost it was players fault according to players. They ruin the club. I am Dutch and although not the biggest fan of Koeman as a person, he has been an excellent coach for all the teams he managed in Holland (except for AZ maybe). But at Ajax, PSV, Vitesse and Feyenoord he's been great. Also everyone here thought he was doing an excellent job at the usually heavily criticized job of national coach. Going from Southampton to Everton was seen as a promotion and even at Everton he was pretty good at the start. I don't know where all the Koeman hate in this video comes from and why HITC thinks that an unproven coach like Xavi will do miles better than an experienced former football great that knows the club philosophy through and through.

Koeman manages just fine when he has a good team on his hands. Just look at his first season at Everton in which he came in 5th (mostly with thanks to Lukaku being on fire that season), or otherwise during his time at Southampton in which he had a fine team with which he qualified for Europa League. And Koeman did well at the Dutch national team because he was lucky enough that lads like Frenkie de Jong and De Ligt broke through, Virgil van Dijk and Wijnaldum are at the peak of their games, and even Memphis Depay isn't entirely useless from time to time. Things do tend to get troublesome for Koeman whenever he actually has to build up a team though, that alone I believe makes his move to Barcelona a disaster waiting to happen. Let alone whatever may happen after those presidential elections have happened next year, when Bartomeu's successor will surely have his own preferences of who needs to manage the team. But Koeman has passed on Barcelona once before, and he probably was afraid that if he would pass on Barcelona again, they would never come back. And Barcelona probably knew Koeman was desperate enough to take the job, even though things are currently far from perfect over there. Anyway, I am not particularly well known for my sheer optimism, but I'd be highly surprised if Koeman actually makes it to the end of next season.

I'd say he did some building with the Dutch national team. Yes he had the luck of the breakthrough of De Jong and De Ligt, but he made De Jong important early on which was a risk. Also, the Dutch team still do not have much talent in front which is woefully different from all Dutch national teams since, let's say, mid-'80s. For the Dutch not to have the creativity of Van Basten, Gullit, Bergkamp, Kluivert, Van Persie, Robben and Sneijder requires a more realistic approach to the game which Koeman incorporated very well. That being said, working with a national team is so different from working on club level. Koemans results with Oranje do not guarantee anything about how he will be doing at Barcelona, I agree.

Are we forgetting the fact that Koeman finished 6th with Southampton not too long ago. SIXTH. With SOUTHAMPTON. That was 2 places above Liverpool who bought pretty much all of Southampton's best player only the season before. Koeman definitely deserves the benefit of the doubt here..

the period from now until august 2021 might be the most important period for Barca in recent memory. Barca have to drastically rebuild their team, convince Messi to extend his contract, vote a new president (hopefully either Font or Laporta), give their young players time on the pitch (Puig, Fati, Trincao, Pedri & Araujo + hopefully Jandro). During all of that they also have to remain respectable and win at least the Copa del Rey or La Liga.

What inflation to you adjust by though CPI and RPI are just weighted increases in the price of a designated basket of goods, which doesn't include football players. Should you adjust by CPI/RPI to compare the price of football players relative to all other goods in the economy. Or should you great a specific football player inflation index, by perhaps just looking at the change in the average amount the football players change hands for year on year? Thus comparing footballer to footballer.

Honestly though i think another thing people need to realize is with Real Madrid having a big problem without Ramos too, without him they have collapsed in several games losing 4-1 to Ajax, 4-2 on agg to city, getting destroyed 3-0 against Barcelona, still a fantastic defender but I think they need to find his replacement and soon they look lifeless without him Oh also Barca are a sh*thole but it seems like Barca and Real take turns being terrible every other year

Real Madrid are able to win la liga games without Ramos as seen this season when zidane had to rotate. Seems a bit harsh on Koeman. Sure, he was underwhelming at Everton, Valencia and Benfica, but he performed anywhere between acceptable and great at Vitesse, Ajax, PSV, Feyenoord, AZ, Southampton and the Dutch national team. I do have to say though, if Barcelona are expecting him to get better results than Setien, they might get them, but if they are hoping for adventurous attacking play, they are likely to be sorely disappointed. Despite having worked for many years with Johan Cruyff, and being very close to him off the pitch too, he has a much more 'Mourinho-esque' approach to the game than most other Dutch managers. It could still work out well for all parties, with Koeman getting better results with a more conservative style initially, until that becomes unacceptable, at which point Xavi can step in.

I feel like you are severely underestimating Barcelona's squad. You say Real had great players, and Chelsea too, but they needed a coach to make it work. Well, this is exactly the same situation at Barca: Griezzman, Ter Stegen, Pique, De Jong, Coutinho, Dembele, Fati, Puig, Semedo, Alba, Sergi, Trincao. Sure there are too many aging players, they need to offload a few. Sure there are some young players, but I for one do think they are a good fit for the first team. Imagine telling a 16 year old Messi he is too young for the first team. No, the truth is Barca have a good squad, which they should fill with prospects and youth players, so the transfer policy should be better. And they need a new president. I seriously think you can and should be more optimistic when there is a new influx of young players in this squad with a Barca legend as Koeman as coach.

Watch any game of Luis in Valverdes second season you will be baffled. He's no where close to old Suarez. His last good year was in 2015 and after that everything has gone down hill. He loses soo many balls durimg the game because hes delusional and thinks he can beat a player. Goals are there but he ruins a lot of plays. Whole team is shit. Its not only Luis. Frenkie is played out of position he and Busi should rotate. Busi doesn't have competent midfield around him. Only source of creativity is Messi. We need Iniesta lime player to ease the burden Messi has. Since Ney left we didn't have a proper winger at all. Dembele is more injured then Bale, Fati still needs time to develop and only having 2 wingers is ridiculous. Koeman is not here to stay if Font is elected Xavi will be new manager after next season ends. Board needs to go go go. What Bartomeu has done to our club is a disgrace he should be burned at the stakes. Incompetent clown. Socis are not duing anything to change this. They are soo easily fooled by Bartomeus theatrics. Paulinho scores few goals and everything is fine, buy griezmann and fool them for another year. He promoted a lot of players from the academy into the first team. Both teams had a lot of problems which they had to solve, but Klopp had a worse team and obviously, he didn't have Messi. I still think Pep is a better manager than Klopp, but they both managed to create great teams out of teams that struggled.

I strongly disagree. I definetely feel like you either underanalysed Ronald Koeman, or you decided to leave out information about Koeman to make your statement seem stronger. Koeman was a great succes at Ajax, Feyenoord, PSV, the Dutch national squad and Southampton where he worked with talents such as VVD and Mané. Koeman does not have a certain way of playing (like Simeone) but tries to analyse what works well and what doesn’t work well. This way he got the Dutch national squad (who all the Dutch people thought became hopeless) running again by debuting both exciting talents (De Jong, Dilrosun etc.) as well as refounding players that seemed to have lost it for the Dutch team (Memphis to striker with overlapping wingers, Babel who was written off, Marten de Roon). Also, when Koeman took charge of Feyenoord, Feyenoord was in a horrible situation. Feyenoord lost the season before 10-0 to PSV and ended with a disappointing 10th place. Feyenoord had no budget to attract new players when Koeman took charge, but Koeman, once again, managed to re-invent players and finished in the top 3 for his 3 years at Feyenoord (I think even 2nd twice). I think this goes to show Koeman is the right man for the job when a team with (relatively) little budget to rebuild (due to corona), needs to re-invent theirselves and rebuild their squad. Furthermore, Koeman is a club legend, (having scored 88 goals as a defender!! Including in the final at Wembley) Koeman was part of the Total Football Dutch Team which went on to win both the hearts of fans, as well the 1988 European Championship and was a student of Johan Cruyff. Koeman speaks fluent Spanish and already owns a house in Barcelona. I think he is the right man for the job and will do very well. But only time will tell. Usually I enjoy your content and facts, but I think this analysis was very short-sightened and you did a poor job informing you viewers about Ronald Koeman!

Probably the best fit. Barca are in shambles though so I wouldn't be surprised if they sack him after a season lol

To know Barça's problems, you need to deep understand their internal political problems, Laporta and Cruyff x Rosell and Bartomeu, football philosofy and identidy.

As a dutch guy I really don’t think helll fit the job but the one of the reason they took him is because of his low value and because in his contract with the Dutch national team he made a clause which lets him leave the National only for Barcelona. That’s a open love letter to Barcelona and they took advantage of this

Barca’s issues really are more simple than its being made to look. Firstly, Bartomeu should leave. Now, and not in March. Next offload some of our old high earners. Not all of them, but surely the Rakitics and Vidals of the squad. Then bring in a manager with a clear plan/vision, style of play, and one that trusts can put trust in the youth, I’d say someone like Ten Hag or Ten Hag himself. And finally, communicate with the fans that we’re in a transition sry period, we all know it but it seems t he board doesn’t. And the sooner they stop chasing big name for quick success, the better. I’d gladly wait 3 trophy-less seasons to see Barcelona play exciting positive football and and show some semblance of the 2011 team. And I’m pretty sure Messi would too, not like I asked him 😅

Yeah but how exactly are you getting rid of your high earners? So many of them are on upwards of 300k or even 400k wages (if not more), players like Alba is on a 5-year deal... Which club in the world in their right minds will be willing to offer these "deadwood" players the wages they're currently earning in Barca to take them off Barca's hands?

Although I agree with the majority of what you're saying - 3 straight seasons without a trophy for a team like Barcelona would be financially devastating.

Chung Ming Zen some will have to go for free🤷🏿‍♂️ Just like with the Ramsey to Juve deal, teams are more willing to pay obscene wagers if they aren’t paying a transfer fee

Steve Haire true, very true. But I’m sure “minor” trophies like the Copa Del Rey and qualifying for the champions league can hold it down for a bit. In all honesty, we are beginning to lose more and more now but we’re paying wages a kin to that of a champions league winning side, and for 3 straight seasons we’ve bought single players for north of 120m. I don’t think things would be that much more financially devastating. + it’ll be smarting sporting-wise, and what’s best for the team is best for the business

To be honest, I think Koeman can do the job. He took over Feyenoord after they finished 10th(!) in the Eredivisie and got battered 10-0 away at PSV. The season he took over, he started a rebuilding process, finishing second in his first year with a squad of youth players and players who, in all honesty, were not good enough for second place. He drilled the players and brought back discipline within the squad. The two seasons after that they finished 3rd and 2nd. I do believe he can rebuild the squad.
