Of all the logo changes displayed in this video. The Pringles change was BY FAR the worst. I was honestly offended when I first saw that in stores lmao. It looks unfinished, like they gave up half way through designing a more simplified logo, and I agree with Solo Sands' point that it now looks dead. Some of these logo changes make sense, and I can get them being better objectively, like the Discord logo... But come on Pringles, that's just embarrassing.

As a graphic designer, I personally like minimalism quite a lot. The problem is that EVERY company is using it now regardless of whether it serves them or not. Minimalist logos work really well for things like banks, airlines and companies that need to look universal and reliable. Companies like Discord, Pringles among others need a distinct personality because THAT'S what attracts people to them. Mind you, I do think Discord did keep part of its personality, with the colors and style. But the Typography doesn't serve them imo. I think the little guy's change isn't that big of a deal lmao

Tbh the main negative experience I have of the simplification is telling app icons apart. When most brands have a saturated icon with no lines, shading or detail, it's kinda the same 6 skittles representing 50+ apps. Even in the limited space of streaming video you might be clicking.. one of the blue ones or one of the red ones?

The problem with Spotify logo is that it's NOT intuitive. I specifically picked people unfamiliar with logo (I took 73, in fact), showed them the picture and asked what do they think this software is doing. 2 went with flashlight. 71 went with wi-fi.

Simplifying a logo so it will be easier to recognize or display isn't necessarily a problem. The problem lies with companies drastically changing their logo, making it unrecognizable such as Microsoft edge and Pinterest. Another problem is a lot of companies have switched to a sharp typeface with consistent lines and angles which feels boring and no longer represents what that company is about. Take the Airbnb logo for example, the large blue and white bubble letters create a feeling of softness and comfort, and the old Pinterest logo, with its cursive, calligraphy like design, presents this feeling of artistic creativity which is what Pinterest is meant to share and both have just switched to colored text.

I understand your point and agree, but I also think it's worth considering the possibility _whether_ a company even wants their logo to be recognisable and to reflect their history. Microsoft Edge is a good example. Their new logo is actually more complex in terms of shading and colour than the old Edge logo, but definitely simpler in shape, as it went from being an "e" to a... croissant? But then, the "e" was also used by Internet Explorer. and you know how _that_ was. No one liked Internet Explorer for decades, and it's been the butt of basically every remotely experienced computer user's jokes. The original Windows 10 Edge was often mocked for just being Internet Explorer with a new name. Therefore, I'd say it's reasonable to assume they really just wanted to hammer home the message that the Chromium-based Edge is a new browser entirely and shouldn't even be associated with IE.

I think the thing that gets me the most about the Pringle's logo is how the text and tie still have the black stroke, but the face doesn't. The black stroke was a connecting factor of the old design, unifying the face, bow and text. I think this is part of what makes the newer logo so confusing. If they wanted to remove the stroke they could've unified the whole logo by removing it from the text and bow as well. I don't think this would be a "fix" per se, but it might make their design choices look like they had more consistency and thought put into them.

I have noticed this with software too, the icons used to look like the item they were representing but now they are all just black thin symbols which look very similar and sometimes impossible to tell what they are until you click on them. life is complicated enough, you should not have to learn what every symbol and icon means in order to know what it does, it should be obvious to anyone just looking at it. They should look like what they are representing. Logos especially should be well designed and distinctive, these basic logos look cheap and give an impression of poor quality and a poor experience.

The worst part about oversimplified logos is that they couldve reduced gradients or shading to 2 or 3 solid colors to keep contrast, one of the most important parts of design, but they dont and just leave it looking like colored text.

You can turn those into multiple solid colors through rotoscoping or take the lazy way out and just make it one solid color like most companies did. I also think that part of the reason some people are upset with the new logos is because they've become attached to them. If someone's never seen the new Petco or Firefox logos before, they're likely not gonna care when they see them for the first time. I know I've become attached to some logos, and while it does hurt to see some of their personality get taken away, it's not the end of the world.

The pinned down icons on the windows taskbar are a usefull idea, that I use daily. Unfortunately nearly all programm icons slowly turn into blue circles. @@danielleanderson6371 Not a good argument because you can vectorize and raster. You can easily Vectorize the Pringles logo. Discord was already a Vector art. Most of the examples shown in the video were pretty much all Vectors already so scaling was never the issue. The little cuts in the older Discord logo are harder to print on various types of merch (as they said themselves) so that makes sense. It's a practical thing to fix. But arguing that vectorization is the reason is not applicable to pretty much anything unless it's ultra complex which would almost exclusively be relevant in cases like old, old Firefox. I don't think it's a fantastic point. It is a point to take into account but the cases are so rare that you might as well omit it in a general discussion or put in as a small asterisk. Everyone is making vector marketing for logos. It's already by far the norm.

I literally got a pringles can last week and i had not had one in ages, so it's the first time i saw the new logo. I just find that simplified logos are really hard to look at. It makes me take way longer to process what I'm looking at The og firefox logo make me thing "fox around globe... firefox browser!", the new one is just "orange and purple blob... fox shape... ball... firefox browser?" The original was really easy to process. You immediately know that it's a browser because of the earth and the fox makes you understand it's the "firefox" browser. The one before the current one was also a bit too simple for me. My favourite is the second one: good use of contrast, pleasing looking colours, better tail shape than 3, still clearly a globe instead of just a ball like in 4 and 5. It's very easy on the eyes and much easier to figure out The old ebay logo was easy to look at because you didn't even need to read to text to recognise the shape. An especially important feature for stuff like Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, Disney Channel, and many other things aimed at kids who might not know how to read. The Discord logo doesn't bother me at all though because it's basically just the same thing. The font and colour choices do though. Bright colours hurt my eyes way more and the font once again requires you to read the word while with the old font you could just see the D and think "yes, that's Discord." Not to mention the fact that a clean font doesn't really scream "disorder and chaos" (i.e. discord) to me. Also the lower case d looks out of place, the line balance is really off and different from the other letters.

I think what people don't realise is alot of logos, atleast for tech stuff, are going to be tiny things shoved in the corner of the screen. I didn't even realise the discord logo had changed, because I only ever see it as tiny 20 pixel icon on my toolbar. Sure when you have a huge blown up image comparing the before an after, you can complain about the lost detail. But at such a tiny scale, things like multiple colors, thin lines, 3D effects, they just aren't noticable, and often make it difficult to read. I often create my own icons for programs I use alot, and had this problem with the original notepad++ icon.

I read somewhere that it's because, in sketches, your eyes can choose which line to focus on and choose the best to make the whole work look the best. While in a clean lineart, there's on one line to choose and see, which isn't as exciting and you don't really know if you chose the best one. I've found a way to close the distance between those two. I watched and learned how to make my lines cleaner and more decisive by stopping the "stroke and stop" motion that a lot of beginners do- also known as the chicken scratch. I do a stroke of line that knows where to end. And I watched professionals like Ethan becker and Reiq who've mastered this. Lol I dunno if I'm just rambling now but I hope this helps someone. I take pride in my lines. I've also noticed that it's a big difference when it comes to painters compared to artists like animators. Both focuses on shapes and forms, but one does it in blocking of colors and the other using lines.

I, along with other people, found the old discord logo quite charming. It was nice and sleek, had character, and had a soothing backing. It is now much more blocky, the blue is much more harsh, and is just more basic. The text seems much more, for lack of a better description, economic. The old one was more dramatic, had a discord feel to it. But worst of all, they removed Wumpus. The absolute legend, the lonely pig himself, Wumpus. He was funny, and indirectly explained what everything was for. He was almost as iconic as the logo, if not even more. And they removed him. Discord was a very user based company, and they are turning into a faceless corporation. They seem to be going with the trend, despite their userbase not liking these changes. Once they saw that users disliked the changes, they could have just gone back.

Im study communication design in a university and what I can say is most of the logo changes are realy good. The goal of a logo is not communication, its recognission. A logo never stands for itself. Personally, I think the anger people feel about this is rooted in the fact that it just... Keeps happening. One company changes their logo and it looks like shit, and it's whatever. But time and time again companies keep changing their branding in the same predictable way that no one seems to like. Out of the one screen of around 12 text logos he shows, I could understand ebay changing ( a bit too scattered and hard to read), and _partially_ Spotify and Airbnb. The reason I only say _partially_ is because while the old logos are not easy to read, the new logos are far too terribly plain, and completely lacking any character or identity. Also Airbnb specifically changes colors entirely, which is very bizarre. And regarding some other text logos shown, Nickelodeon change seemed fine (I think most complaining is just nostalgia), and Dunkin' also seemed fine, even though the business decision of changing the name was certainly risky.

I actually like the discord redesign. It's not as bad as some other redesigns (Pringles), the new color is bright, but it doesn't hurt my eyes
