I think the thing that gets me the most about the Pringle's logo is how the text and tie still have the black stroke, but the face doesn't. The black stroke was a connecting factor of the old design, unifying the face, bow and text. I think this is part of what makes the newer logo so confusing. If they wanted to remove the stroke they could've unified the whole logo by removing it from the text and bow as well. I don't think this would be a "fix" per se, but it might make their design choices look like they had more consistency and thought put into them.

It is now much more blocky, the blue is much more harsh, and is just more basic. The text seems much more, for lack of a better description, economic. The old one was more dramatic, had a discord feel to it. But worst of all, they removed Wumpus. The absolute legend, the lonely pig himself, Wumpus. He was funny, and indirectly explained what everything was for. He was almost as iconic as the logo, if not even more. And they removed him. Discord was a very user based company, and they are turning into a faceless corporation. They seem to be going with the trend, despite their userbase not liking these changes. Minimalist logos work really well for things like banks, airlines and companies that need to look universal and reliable. Companies like Discord, Pringles among others need a distinct personality because THAT'S what attracts people to them. Someone said that it feels like the personality is being taken away when they over simplify logos and as an artist I feel it’s similar to when u have a sketch with so much personality and emotion but then you outline it and all that disappears, because in a way you’ve simplified it, taken away all the little flaws and lines that gave it that personality in the first place :(
@oatmeal30133 жыл бұрын

So that's why sketches look better than lineart in alot of cases
@GreySeashell-j3m3 жыл бұрын
I read somewhere that it's because, in sketches, your eyes can choose which line to focus on and choose the best to make the whole work look the best. While in a clean lineart, there's on one line to choose and see, which isn't as exciting and you don't really know if you chose the best one. I've found a way to close the distance between those two. I watched and learned how to make my lines cleaner and more decisive by stopping the "stroke and stop" motion that a lot of beginners do- also known as the chicken scratch. I do a stroke of line that knows where to end. And I watched professionals like Ethan becker and Reiq who've mastered this. Lol I dunno if I'm just rambling now but I hope this helps someone. I take pride in my lines. I've also noticed that it's a big difference when it comes to painters compared to artists like animators. Both focuses on shapes and forms, but one does it in blocking of colors and the other using lines.

Simplifying a logo so it will be easier to recognize or display isn't necessarily a problem. The problem lies with companies drastically changing their logo, making it unrecognizable such as Microsoft edge and Pinterest. Another problem is a lot of companies have switched to a sharp typeface with consistent lines and angles which feels boring and no longer represents what that company is about. I understand your point and agree, but I also think it's worth considering the possibility _whether_ a company even wants their logo to be recognisable and to reflect their history. Microsoft Edge is a good example. Their new logo is actually more complex in terms of shading and colour than the old Edge logo, but definitely simpler in shape, as it went from being an "e" to a... croissant? But then, the "e" was also used by Internet Explorer. and you know how _that_ was. No one liked Internet Explorer for decades, and it's been the butt of basically every remotely experienced computer user's jokes. The original Windows 10 Edge was often mocked for just being Internet Explorer with a new name. Therefore, I'd say it's reasonable to assume they really just wanted to hammer home the message that the Chromium-based Edge is a new browser entirely and shouldn't even be associated with IE.

The reason why I find the oversimplified logos bad is because they feel so lifeless and uninspired. Due to every logo having a similar design structure favoring simple fonts and basic shapes, they start to feel very similar. Take, for example, the image at 7:51 with the logos of Google, Airbnb, Spotify, and Pinterest on the page. The upper logos felt unique, and had their own recognizable style and energy to them that made them stand out. Compare that to the bottom logos, whom look nearly identical in shape, with the only differences being their colors. People are mad because the logos are just boring and plain, they lack any sort of emotion in them and convey "I am a corporation" more than anything else.

I think what hurts most about the Discord change is that it feels like going corporate, which is what discord has been the antithesis of from its creation. It was the spunky upstar that wanted to take on the big established voice communication platforms. Changing, but especially that it is in a similar way to how you see all the massive brands in silicon valley that feel so detached from the human side of things, is not the feeling people associate with Discord, hanging out with friends.

It depends on the brand. Some brands are meant to be cold and emotionless, like aws services, some need character like pringles. When pringles uses the same design principles as a technical service for storing data, it's simply a bad idea.

Personally, I think the anger people feel about this is rooted in the fact that it just... Keeps happening. One company changes their logo and it looks like shit, and it's whatever. But time and time again companies keep changing their branding in the same predictable way that no one seems to like. No matter how much backlash they get, they go full steam ahead, because everyone else is doing it, I guess? At least to me, it's not that I feel powerless, it's that I'm irritated by how utterly out of touch these people are when everyone is screaming at them at full volume. Its the completely asinine attempts at justification that feel like blatant lies from design teams desperate to justify their pay check. No, your change doesn't make your brand "friendly" or "energetic". It just looks bad. Are they trying to lie to me, or to themselves?
@subtleusername54753 жыл бұрын
no, they're definitely trying to lie to you. whatever they're trying to convey, they're not making any real substantial changes. as the perfect example and with pride month coming up, look at how corporations treat it. the only thing they do is edit their logos to have rainbow colors and they'll change it back immediately on july 1st. it's all bullshit, and it definitely drives me insane too.

Companies changing their logos is fine with me but the problem I have with it now is that it feels like there are following a trend. I also feel like they lose more readability and uniqueness. I thank like logos should be like video game icons on computers. Some have more detail than others and some are really sample. And they communicate some information about what the game is like.

I also think that part of the reason some people are upset with the new logos is because they've become attached to them. If someone's never seen the new Petco or Firefox logos before, they're likely not gonna care when they see them for the first time. I know I've become attached to some logos, and while it does hurt to see some of their personality get taken away, it's not the end of the world.

Industrial design, graphic design and architecture are the art we're surrounded by 24/7 - it should be appealing
@k80_3 жыл бұрын
Exactly. I care not for these brands, but simplified logos seem to have the sole goal of being easily recognizable above all else. Even aesthetic beauty is secondary to this goal. This is probably bad for the brands in the long term. If you don’t know what mastercard is, what does the orange Venn diagram mean to you? By removing all identifying features and relying on brand recognition by the viewer to fill in the gaps, they’re alienating anyone who doesn’t know what they’re looking at. Having a more interesting or complex logo also makes a person look at it for longer, and they are more likely to find some aspect of the brand they have a connection with.
@chickennuggetpaw3 жыл бұрын
Yeah but they aren’t going to be. Not everything is gonna be a piece of fine artwork that can bring you to tears. Most brands are going to chose something that’s easy to recognize over something aesthetically pleasing, most of the time, because it’s most convenient for them.
@kelpy_w_3 жыл бұрын
Being surrounded by "art" and being surrounded by loads of information are two completely different experiences. Artstyles are being simplified because of the latter. Art is important from a visual standpoint but a good Design can solve problems. And in many cases, the problem is that "there's a shit ton of info we need consumers to digest and we need them to have an easier time doing so, so they don't get confused".
@ObsessedwithZelda23 жыл бұрын
@Carlos Adrián Aguirre Interesting tidbit, if what your printing has 3 or less colors, it’s cheaper to print (assuming you use the right equipment and such). Because printing uses CMYK for full color pictures, it’s gonna use 4 diff inks. So then a simple logo with 4 different colors is as expensive as a full color pic (generally) But you save some money each color you remove. Idk, I think it’s cool anyways

They don't realize the logo being easier to reproduce is not a solution, but a problem. If anyone can do it in paint in a few minutes, it means your logo is nothing special. And that your brand is nothing special as well (which is surprisingly honest, though definitely unintended)

I think one reason for the simplification is, that they now can use vectors instead of up-/downscaled images, which makes it easier to put the logo on stuff in different sizes
@SiMeGamer2 жыл бұрын
@Danielle Anderson Not a good argument because you can vectorize and raster. You can easily Vectorize the Pringles logo. Discord was already a Vector art. Most of the examples shown in the video were pretty much all Vectors already so scaling was never the issue. The little cuts in the older Discord logo are harder to print on various types of merch (as they said themselves) so that makes sense. It's a practical thing to fix. But arguing that vectorization is the reason is not applicable to pretty much anything unless it's ultra complex which would almost exclusively be relevant in cases like old, old Firefox. I don't think it's a fantastic point. It is a point to take into account but the cases are so rare that you might as well omit it in a general discussion or put in as a small asterisk. Everyone is making vector marketing for logos. It's already by far the norm.
@SiMeGamer2 жыл бұрын
@Danielle Anderson that's very possible but it's sadly at the cost of their lovely mustache man. Even when I didn't buy their snacks, I always remembered and loved their old logo. Still do. It's so welcoming and comfy. Now it's dead.
