Ironically this one actually is about drugs. Its a reference to a line in Hunter S Thompson's semi auto-biographical novel "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas". Wherein the protagonist and his attorney are driving though the desert high on psychedelics and he sees giant bats flying around and he says "we can't stop here, this is bat country" It also shows up in the movie version of the novel (which is kinda meh ... read the novel instead of watching the movie).

For some Context: This is the song that brought Avenged Sevenfold into the mainstream. It is the second single off the album. The song’s theme functions as a reference to Hunter S. Thompson’s novel Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1971, 1972), and the film adaptation released in 1998 with Johnny Depp. The function is carried out on multiple levels: its lyrics make obvious references to the novel (e.g. “He who makes a beast of himself gets rid of the pain of being a man” is a quote from Samuel Johnson that is used as the preface to the book); the music video for this song recreates some scenes from the film; the ups and downs of the verses and post-choruses (i.e. “So sorry you’re not here…”), respectively, are meant to represent the highs and lows of a drug trip.

Slow it down to Metallica speed for Lex and listen to “Hail To The King”. Also, I think you lean on songs having to be “remastered” to hear them better. Sometimes you just have to take them as an original production and as so unique compared to studio remasters.

Glad you guys are finally reacting to A7X ! Genuinely one of the best bands, Matt's voice is insane, The Rev's lyrics makes you think even after a decade plus, Syn's playing is legitimately on a different level ! Definitely check out Afterlife (Full Studio version, not the radio cut), Nightmare, Seize the Day, Gunslinger, Beast and the Harlot and if you enjoy them, A Little Piece of Heaven (with this its a lot of metaphors and symbolism, as opposed to it being black and white in just lyrics).

These are Matt’s lyrics, Rev was a good lyricist tho but STST/WTF/COE we’re solely Matt lyrically, the only 2 A7X album Jimmy wrote lyrics for were self titled and nightmare. I’d say Matt was the better lyricist and stuff like the stage is incredible lyrically but Jimmy was still a very good lyricist himself. Matt’s lyrics definitely make me think more tho especially stuff like the stage or even city of evil

The following quote, also included at the beginning of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, is referred to twice throughout the song (at the beginning and the bridge before the last chorus) and is shown at the beginning of the music video. "He who makes a beast of himself gets rid of the pain of being a man." - Samuel Johnson Also referenced in the song is a lyric derived from the final words spoken about Dr. Gonzo at the end of the film adaptation. The lyric is used at the end of the second breakdown of the song, as the final lyric of the song. "There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die." - Raoul Duke

I think "He who makes a beast of himself gets rid of the pain of being a man." is a way of saying one sometimes must become a beast to avoid the pains of being a man because a beast wouldn't have empathy, compassion, love, or any kind of emotional connections and those are the causes of most pain in life.

If you haven't seen the movie you absolutely have to! This song is based on a book by Hunter S Thompson called "Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas" which also had a movie made out of it with Johnny Depp. "Bat Country" is a reference to the opening scene where Johnny Depps character is flying through the Desert on the way to Las Vegas with his attorney and the both of them are tripping on an entire suitcase full of different drugs/substances and Johnny is swatting at bats he claims to see flying all around them in the air as they drive down the interstate in their convertible. "We can't stop here! This is Bat Country!" He says as they pull over to make another visit to their brief case in the trunk

Awesome that ya'll are reacting to Avenged Sevenfold! You HAVE to react to more! Afterlife, Nightmare, Buried Alive, Hail to the King, Shepherd of Fire, and of course So Far Away which is such an emotional experience. Obviously there are so many more from A7X. Would be great to see what you guys think!

Buried Alive, God Hates us All, Nightmare, The Beast and the Harlot, Chapter IV are all songs that you would need to hear to get a good idea of what they are capable of as a band.
