Wow, what a thing. That whole whirlwind of frantic exciting activity and promises followed by urgent decisions needing to be made just sounds super manic, followed by a pretty textbook crash in interest and capability to follow through. I have heard pretty much unanimous accounts so far of all of the american retail knife companies paying absolute peanuts to their employees. As a general rule, any business that goes for the “we are a family” tact with its rank and file employees generally starts on the sunny side of that term but soon converts it to the side more akin to constant favors and unpaid overtime.

Mike being manic depressive is the first thing I thought of when I saw this video. I wouldn't be so quick to generalize that American companies don't pay well. Be of value to a company, be a dependable employee, and you'll be fairly compensated. Yes, there are bad bosses, but that's not the norm.

Did you publicly question him on the Microtech thing? If so, I can understand why he might be upset. When you work with someone, they need to know that you have their back 110%. That’s tricky, given what your channel is about. (And this isn’t a criticism, because I have a similar personality.). Overall it sounds like everyone meant well, but the practical considerations should have been dealt with differently. You should have known upfront what the positions pay. And he should have enlisted a buyer’s agent to find a place… based on his criteria, he probably would have learned within minutes that it would be difficult or impossible to find a place. All of that should have happened before you decided to leave your current property. I know, this is probably all obvious in retrospect… I hope everything works out. There’s some good ideas down here in the comments.

There are definitely lessons to be learned from this. I've been on both sides of this situation, the young person needing help and finding the wrong person to trust because they told me everything I wanted to hear, and also more recently as the business owner with huge ideas for growth who got ahead of himself and when things didn't work out, ended up hurting others. As I've learned from those mistakes I'm sure both you and Mike will as well moving forward. As I said yesterday in the video that was taking down, in today's economy finding work should be easier than finding housing that will accommodate your needs with 6 dogs. It was hell for me finding a place to allow 2 dogs, and even then I had to lie on my lease because of the breed of one of my dogs. My suggestion would be to relocate if housing is completely unavailable in your area. Start looking for places with better housing options, find a house that will work for your needs, then find employment in that area. I own a lawn care service and the entire industry is desperate for labor, and we're paying a lot more than we used to. If you find housing, I would call all the lawn care companies in that area and see if they're hiring and find out what they're paying. I suggest this because you've mentioned experience in that field before, and its usually something you can start ASAP. I'm sure you're looking for other options too, but thought I'd throw that out there because in my area literally everybody I know in this field is desperate to hire people. If you need anything to review, you are welcome to borrow anything in my collection as long as you "use my shit" and if you need to sell anything in your collection I am almost always open to buying knives lol. Let us know when you get the gofundme or patreon set up and I will contribute there as well. Do some research and see which options have the lowest (or no) fees and fastest transfer policies so avoid delays down the road getting the money into your bank. You might also consider something like Cashap or Venmo.

Lots of wisdom in your post. For sure, we business owners have the toughest time getting excited about future plans, using that excitement to motivate employees, but also knowing when to draw the line and temper our expectations. I just turned away a chance to double my business because everything would have to go perfectly and I would have had to make promises I don't know whether I could keep. I always wonder if people think past the step of adding a contract to deals like this and determine how the contract would have actually helped.. or not helped. Usually a contract means, at best, better odds of financial compensation after breech of contract. Most likely it also means more time and stress going through litigation to get it...not good! Actually contracts often end up functioning only to draw out the pain even longer and with more $$ when you get the lawyers and legal system involved which is the last thing people want. Plus he has not yet refused to help them with the financial hit they are taking. If they aren't planning on asking him to help financially then a contract would literally not have helped with anything. He has to say "No" to their request for compensation for this mess before a contract would have served a purpose. The contract exists in case he refuses to follow through.. not to force him to do it. In regard to these ladies time, future plans, losing the home and stress this caused it would have happened pretty much the same way had a contract existed. A contract alone is often not enough in these situations. Here's 2 options to help protect against this happening this way again... 1) Moving bonus paid in advance. I almost always ask for this when the other side backing out exposes me to risk of either time or money loss. 2) If a bonus can't be negotiated then there's still an option. Each party deposits a predetermined amount into an escrow account. If either party backs out then the other gets the whole pot. And if any potential litigation will them be the burden of the one who backed out. I've done this a lot. It eliminates the need to trust and helps you to adjust to the fallout of a bad business deal. Both of these options would have given him more to lose than the time he spent on a few phone calls which is all it sounds like he invested in the deal. It probably would have made him take it more seriously.

This is a crazy story . I have alot of thoughts on this hole situation but I think I'll just keep them to myself . The one think i wanted to tell you guys is there is a major shortage of labor out there . I work for a large concrete contracting company as a foreman we are paying young people male and female $38 an hour to come to work for us starting out that's $24 per hour on your check every week and 15 $ per hour for a benefit package which includes full health insurance and pension . This is a union job . Also I do not live in a big city more like a rural area with a few Big Towns probably similar to where you live . There are these kind of jobs everywhere in every industry right now. Like one guy commented earlier it's easier to find a really good paying job then it is to find a house .

Here is a wild idea, come to Vermont… if you can work at construction or farming or day care for dogs, not a rat race, regroup. Work, dog friendly we’ll find housing less then 30 minutes to a good job… maybe start a knife community here… we really don’t have one. But what we do have are strong communities that let you be the strong people you want to be

I love knives, have many and like most, enjoy all the knife and gun KZbin channels - been watching them for years and years… you are incredibly talented - above and beyond knives, you are engaging, real, informative, consistent and you have one of the best if not the best channel - I just love your videos. Keep moving forward but try not to forget that not everyone can do this KZbin thing - it takes creativity and talent as well as knowledge and you do it so incredibly well. Don’t worry so much about where you are because your incredible talent will take you places. You have talent way above anything I could ever aspire to - this situation sucks but you will prevail and I will support you as well - you deserve it!

Wow that’s such a crazy story! I feel bad It didn’t work out. Hopefully Ohio isn’t totally out of the picture! I think you 2 would really like the Lakewood or somewhere near Lake Erie area out here. The dog situation is tough too. I had to give up one dog when I was younger to move somewhere. It still bugs me, I could only imagine 4 or more. But i had a friend who ran a dog sitting business and had 10+ dogs all the time and they had a pretty big family on top of that but made it happen. Bedford OH area.

IMHO, you should monetize. Taking money from youtube doesn’t compromise you and your viewers can support you via subscription. It doesn’t stop you from refusing “shady” deals that would compromise your ethics. Of course, this would only generate a small amount of money that won’t solve this issue but it would help to keep the channel going. Pls post the gofundme links when you can.

Having not ever met this "Mike" or even heard of this company until today, this sounds like a top down problem. First, their guy left "suddenly", which is the first red flag. Did he say why the guy left? Cause employees don't leave bad jobs, only bad bosses. And it seems like you dodged a bullet. If this is how he acts to non employees, I can only imagine the struggles you'd have to suffer as employees. Personally, i don't trust people like that with tons promises. And if he was actually serious from the beginning it would have been in writing. I think y'all dodged a bullet. Wishing you the best of luck!

Is there no place to park a camper in either New Hampshire or Ohio? Just get a camper and live in it . I have . I used to pull my camper to the jobs sites I was working on when I had to .

It may not hurt to look into job opportunities with some of the big knife companies, mainly the ones you test and do reviews on. Product loyalty and honesty can go along way. Plus these companies have the money to get you there and settled with relocation packages. Just an idea. All the best to you both.

I’m sorry you learned a hard, crappy lesson and I’m even more sorry that Mike is going to learn absolutely nothing from ruining months of your lives. I’d steer clear of people like that, especially when they offer help they never actually provide. Performative altruism is a glaring red flag, even if you really believe he would have provided help if he had the means… I mean, how much does a phone call cost these days? He could have contacted any time, remember that. I’m just about to get a job after a month being laid off so I can’t help right now but I could in a few weeks when the paychecks come back. At least you did not move to Ohio and then get hit with a company policy disallowing employees from posting opinions on social media about vendors/knives carried by REC. Mike ghosting you during the ProTech fiasco may have been him, or someone close to him, considering opinions as a liability to his company. To be fair though, he surely knew who he was associating with so, it may have very well been someone else in the company or possibly a vendor that encouraged him to part ways with you. I am sorry that this turned out the way it did and I am praying for a new door to open for you and Nicole.

I just would of tried finding someone to take in my dogs until I got settled. Well listening further I guess salary should of been the first thing. The knife business is not pleasant at all but what is.
