Wow, what a thing. That whole whirlwind of frantic exciting activity and promises followed by urgent decisions needing to be made just sounds super manic, followed by a pretty textbook crash in interest and capability to follow through. I have heard pretty much unanimous accounts so far of all of the american retail knife companies paying absolute peanuts to their employees. As a general rule, any business that goes for the “we are a family” tact with its rank and file employees generally starts on the sunny side of that term but soon converts it to the side more akin to constant favors and unpaid overtime.

Well said Pete. This is very accurate of my experiences with "family culture" in American business. Employees are your most valuable asset and companies need to remember that.

Mike being manic depressive is the first thing I thought of when I saw this video. I wouldn't be so quick to generalize that American companies don't pay well. Be of value to a company, be a dependable employee, and you'll be fairly compensated. Yes, there are bad bosses, but that's not the norm.

@@ZPositive I think Mike had a plan that depended on everything going right to work out, and when everything didn't go right he didn't know how to handle it. He only said American knife dealers don't pay well, not all American companies. I have heard this as well, specifically Blade HQ as it relates to all the turnover with their KZbin personalities

Big fan of the channel and very appreciative of all the genuine and thoughtful opinions you have been sharing on the knives that have been discussed in all your episodes. This by itself is a service to those who are not well equipped to make purchasing decisions and want to make sure the purchase they are making is coming from an informed place. You provided so much good information to us beginners that I see you as a consultant and I am willing to pay for this information. So do not see it as a handout! The only area that I hope you are willing to be open to is to seek input from this community as to what is best to do with the money you will be getting to make sure that you have diversity of inputs from smart folks here who are willing to strategize with you to put this money to “best” work for you and Nicole to give you stability and minimize risk of finding yourself in this predicament ever in the future. Both of you are young and smart and have the potential to do good things in life but you need mentorship. Seek it out and be open to get feedback from your audience. You have to have a plan and be intentional about it. We are here to help.

Did you publicly question him on the Microtech thing? If so, I can understand why he might be upset. When you work with someone, they need to know that you have their back 110%. That’s tricky, given what your channel is about. (And this isn’t a criticism, because I have a similar personality.). Overall it sounds like everyone meant well, but the practical considerations should have been dealt with differently. You should have known upfront what the positions pay. And he should have enlisted a buyer’s agent to find a place… based on his criteria, he probably would have learned within minutes that it would be difficult or impossible to find a place. All of that should have happened before you decided to leave your current property. I know, this is probably all obvious in retrospect… I hope everything works out. There’s some good ideas down here in the comments.

I always wonder if people think past the step of adding a contract to deals like this and determine how the contract would have actually helped.. or not helped. Usually a contract means, at best, better odds of financial compensation after breech of contract. Most likely it also means more time and stress going through litigation to get it...not good! Actually contracts often end up functioning only to draw out the pain even longer and with more $$ when you get the lawyers and legal system involved which is the last thing people want. Plus he has not yet refused to help them with the financial hit they are taking. If they aren't planning on asking him to help financially then a contract would literally not have helped with anything. He has to say "No" to their request for compensation for this mess before a contract would have served a purpose. The contract exists in case he refuses to follow through.. not to force him to do it. In regard to these ladies time, future plans, losing the home and stress this caused it would have happened pretty much the same way had a contract existed. A contract alone is often not enough in these situations. Here's 2 options to help protect against this happening this way again... 1) Moving bonus paid in advance. I almost always ask for this when the other side backing out exposes me to risk of either time or money loss. 2) If a bonus can't be negotiated then there's still an option. Each party deposits a predetermined amount into an escrow account. If either party backs out then the other gets the whole pot. And if any potential litigation will them be the burden of the one who backed out. I've done this a lot. It eliminates the need to trust and helps you to adjust to the fallout of a bad business deal. Both of these options would have given him more to lose than the time he spent on a few phone calls which is all it sounds like he invested in the deal. It probably would have made him take it more seriously.

@arrowheadguys7637
@arrowheadguys7637 2 жыл бұрын
There are definitely lessons to be learned from this. I've been on both sides of this situation, the young person needing help and finding the wrong person to trust because they told me everything I wanted to hear, and also more recently as the business owner with huge ideas for growth who got ahead of himself and when things didn't work out, ended up hurting others. As I've learned from those mistakes I'm sure both you and Mike will as well moving forward. As I said yesterday in the video that was taking down, in today's economy finding work should be easier than finding housing that will accommodate your needs with 6 dogs. It was hell for me finding a place to allow 2 dogs, and even then I had to lie on my lease because of the breed of one of my dogs. My suggestion would be to relocate if housing is completely unavailable in your area. Start looking for places with better housing options, find a house that will work for your needs, then find employment in that area. I own a lawn care service and the entire industry is desperate for labor, and we're paying a lot more than we used to. If you find housing, I would call all the lawn care companies in that area and see if they're hiring and find out what they're paying. I suggest this because you've mentioned experience in that field before, and its usually something you can start ASAP. I'm sure you're looking for other options too, but thought I'd throw that out there because in my area literally everybody I know in this field is desperate to hire people. If you need anything to review, you are welcome to borrow anything in my collection as long as you "use my shit" and if you need to sell anything in your collection I am almost always open to buying knives lol. Let us know when you get the gofundme or patreon set up and I will contribute there as well. Do some research and see which options have the lowest (or no) fees and fastest transfer policies so avoid delays down the road getting the money into your bank. You might also consider something like Cashap or Venmo.

Lots of wisdom in your post. For sure, we business owners have the toughest time getting excited about future plans, using that excitement to motivate employees, but also knowing when to draw the line and temper our expectations. That enthusiasm that drives us can also be very destructive if we don't control it.

@@ZPositive I like to think us Anthony's got things figured out Yeah, growth opportunities are the hardest thing for business owners to manage, especially if it's significant. It's easy to get over-excited and make plans for everything to work out perfectly. The problem with that is it requires everything to go perfectly to work. I just turned away a chance to double my business because everything would have to go perfectly and I would have had to make promises I don't know whether I could keep. Sucks to turn it away but was the best avenue. I've said yes to similar things in the past and it's never worked out

Unfortunately in the end it literally is gonna put you guys out on the street. If I had to guess, I think he probably had a big vision moving forward and figured you guys would make your way out no matter what, so he just kept saying yes and a plan with no real backbone ended up forming but for you guys it was the only option. That said, I’ve seen situations end quite poorly when one person is controlling another persons income and living situation while also being in a completely new place. This is a union job . Also I do not live in a big city more like a rural area with a few Big Towns probably similar to where you live . There are these kind of jobs everywhere in every industry right now. Like one guy commented earlier it's easier to find a really good paying job then it is to find a house .

I have a rescue dog and he's a member of the family and I'd like to rescue morebut it's not in our budget to do that right now. Saying that to say this which your not gonna like. It's sounds like some of those dogs need to go back to the SPCA until you can actually afford to rescue so many dogs. Look I get it and I don't like saying that but it sounds like based on what your saying is that you've taken on too many dogs and that's a big reason your in the financial situation your in. With 2 incomes it shouldn't be that much of a struggle. The situation with REC a side. I'm praying for the both of you . I hope that what I said doesn't offend you because that's not my intention at all.

It may not hurt to look into job opportunities with some of the big knife companies, mainly the ones you test and do reviews on. Product loyalty and honesty can go along way. Plus these companies have the money to get you there and settled with relocation packages. Just an idea. All the best to you both.

Here is a wild idea, come to Vermont… if you can work at construction or farming or day care for dogs, not a rat race, regroup. Work, dog friendly we’ll find housing less then 30 minutes to a good job… maybe start a knife community here… we really don’t have one. But what we do have are strong communities that let you be the strong people you want to be

This kind of experience cant be bought, only earned through anguish. God blessed you with conviction and discernment which will give you a better life and opportunities. There was no way to know this unless you have savvy business people around you, which you dont, but you always set the terms before anything. And get it in writing. No matter how sweet the deal and how nice they are. I dont think you did anything wrong, in fact you aced this test. God bless you

Damn that’s insane to hear about REC. Sometimes a business grows too fast for the owners to handle, but it’s insane to know people are counting on you and to put that situation on the back burner. At the very least you put an assistant on combing retail listings or something if you can’t handle it yourself. You’re dealing with this in a much more mature way than I would, which I admire you for

I own and run a business and completely agree with the OP. Business ethics are not an oxymoron. As an employer, one is responsible for his promised whether they're in writing or not. A contract is a contract. These young women were told it's a no-go at the last minute, after they'd already made concrete plans to depart, and apparently REC was aware of all this. Ultimately, this comes down to responsibility and professionalism, and REC dropped the ball. Makes me a bit angry, if I'm honest.

Having not ever met this "Mike" or even heard of this company until today, this sounds like a top down problem. First, their guy left "suddenly", which is the first red flag. Did he say why the guy left? Cause employees don't leave bad jobs, only bad bosses. And it seems like you dodged a bullet. If this is how he acts to non employees, I can only imagine the struggles you'd have to suffer as employees. Personally, i don't trust people like that with tons promises. And if he was actually serious from the beginning it would have been in writing. I think y'all dodged a bullet. Wishing you the best of luck!

I just would of tried finding someone to take in my dogs until I got settled. Well listening further I guess salary should of been the first thing. IMHO, you should monetize. Taking money from youtube doesn’t compromise you and your viewers can support you via subscription. It doesn’t stop you from refusing “shady” deals that would compromise your ethics. At least you did not move to Ohio and then get hit with a company policy disallowing employees from posting opinions on social media about vendors/knives carried by REC. Mike ghosting you during the ProTech fiasco may have been him, or someone close to him, considering opinions as a liability to his company. To be fair though, he surely knew who he was associating with so, it may have very well been someone else in the company or possibly a vendor that encouraged him to part ways with you. I am sorry that this turned out the way it did and I am praying for a new door to open for you and Nicole.
