Hand of Doom being a ‘rekka’ out of backdash is pretty important. 1. You can avoid throws as well as strikes, which is rare (aka unheard of) for a reversal in strive, which means you can make most of the top tiers cry. 2. Due to strive’s special kara super mechanic, you can cancel the startup of hand of doom into a super, which basically means you can cancel backdash into his supers (though I bet it’ll require some practice to do it fast so there’s an avenue for skill expression). So even though Last Horizon isn’t stated to be invulnerable on startup like super mappa, you can still use it as a reversal. 3. Hand is delayable out of backdash, which means it has the potential to beat a lot of OS’s that might beat other reversals. 4. You can combo out of it on counterhit meterlessly. This too is unheard of. 5. Hand isn’t even counterhit recovery on block. Once again, completely unheard of for a reversal. Do NOT be sad that it isn’t safe. In the context of strive, Hand of Doom is privileged at a level I can barely even fathom, and unless it has some quirk in the frame data like being minus on normal hit, I’d wager that Slayer will have the BEST defense in the game just off of this one move. Also Last Horizon is described as a strike, and nowhere in the trailer does it say that it can hit blocking opponents.

Minus on normal hit. You mean may dolphin for about 2 years. (and yeah a lot of moves are minus on normal hit, but you can cancel them so it's irrelevant, hit only adds 3 more frames (4 if crouch hit), unless it has a property like trip launch or direct knockdown etc) But yeah Slayer is going to be turbo cracked.

@@Awuga guilty fear strive’s design philosophy seems to be to make universal mechanics, well, universal. If it is a strike, chances are it can be red roman cancelled on hit or block. Strive seems to not really like exceptions, and would rather implement weaknesses into moves instead of artificially limit a move’s access to a universal mechanic that it otherwise would have. Therefore, I believe it will likely be able to be rc’d on block.

That move slayer does where he dashes forward with a blue disk behind him is Blue Wild Assault, and out of all 3 versions, they gave him the setup version. Red is for combos, Blue is for setups, and White is for winning. You might find that weird but TBF they gave Johnny, a setup like character, Red and Elphelt, the combo machine, Blue.

04:26 Hiya Lucid, Long time viewer and guilty gear enjoyer! I play a ton of all 3 mainline Guilty Gear Games including strive, so i can explain how this interaction works. This is a Guard Crush Combo, which takes the place of Black Beat combos in strive since there is no air teching. When you get hit by a guard crush attack, you enter a stun animation for a brief period of time. while in this animation you can only do 3 things. Block, Deflect Shield(season 3's 50% burst meter that pushes people a mile away) and Burst. *note that i included block here*. Guard Crush isn't like blockstun, so if you let go of block you can be hit during this animation. thats what creates the black beat combos for strive. so in this case Nago simply just let go of block and got hit with what looks like Slayers C.s. Now why would you let go of block? well in strive Guard Crush has another delineation from Blockstun. after leaving block stun you have 5 frames of throw invincibility, built in so you can mash on characters throws like Nagoriyuki's Bite or Potemkin's Buster. this creates the strike throw we all know and love since if they guess wrong they either get tossed or get counter hit. *Guard crush doesn't give you that at all.* if you get hit by a guard crush attack you can get thrown the first frame after you recover. meaning strike throw turns into guess for game as they lose the option to mash on you and have to backdash or jump. You can see this with Johnny's Cards allowing for Throw Resets(Still not as cool as his dustloops from XRD) and Nagoriyuki's white wild assault and 6HS(Both cause Guard Crush). which leads to Nago being able to have even more frightening corner pressure. Why does this matter to slayer? it means that he can strike throw the shit out of people off his HS Follow up "Master's Hammer" because of the guard crush. so either they get caught jumping or backdashing with a well timed C.s, or they get thrown which gives Slayer his "UNIVERSE" Counter hit. Basicly means Slayer as a character will be Viable. High Low mix that can lead to a strike throw situation if they stay too defensive? Going to be very strong. My guess for what could make him worse is no invincibility when dashing.... which would be a bummer, but kinda like his Backdash in this game being reduced to a meter-less reversal, there have to be ways to counterplay him. The good news is with his backdash in netrual you can do some minor mind games of going for 446S for his Backdash attack to make them play it safe on wake up, and then simply just perform a wake up back dash to disconnect from the opponent's pressure. No more fully invincible wake up grabs sadly, but makes sense considering Strives design philosophy of reducing certain powerful options and simplifying mechanics to make it easier to start learning fighting games. the 100% tension also makes me super excited when Dizzy comes back as that could mean we have Gamma Ray come back! cant wait to see that in action! Edit: also wanted to add that we saw from the trailer that you can combo into his 100% super move, so like Sol's Alpha version of Heavy Mob Cemetery. Second Edit: 08:10 This right here is similar to Strive Baiken. Blue Wild assault leads to a stagger state that you can combo into her S.Kabari , so for slayer if you spend 50% burst you can combo into his bite on grounded combos.

Awesome analysis! blue wild assault into bite was something I didn’t consider at first, but looks like a very potent option for starting his threatening universe pressure. His vacuum scratch looking move also makes me think that this character is going to be biting a ton, probably the reason why his dandy pressure doesn’t seem to have meterless follow ups with no counter hit.

Slayer’s 6P was shown in the gameplay video. It seems like it is a lot faster, but it is just an elbow bash as opposed to slayer’s whole back. A fast 6p is honestly probably a lot better for strive, since you can’t low profile any of the reversals in this game, and if slayer’s 6p had the same startup as it did in previous games, it would make beating stuff like elphelt’s Rekka and Rekka resets impossible without meter. It is sad to see 6p go, but slayer is probably better of in strive with his new one.

Explanation for guard crush and universe counter hit Guard crush: this is an effect that has extended blockstun. Unlike regular blockstun, it has no throw protection of any kind whereas any other blocked attack has 5 frames of throw protection. Additionally guard crush deactivates the affected player's input buffer for the duration of the effect thereby making abare defense and reversals much harder to do. What this means for slayer is that there is potentially a situation that exists where you can guarantee bloodsucking universe on your opponent however the situations where this is possible will likely be difficult to set up for Universal counter hit: counter hit in strive exists in levels where certain attacks allow for higher level counter hit states than others. For example, Sol's 5K inflicts a smaller counter hit state than his 5H. What this means for slayer is that universal counter hit guarantees that slayer gets the maximum level counter hit state off of any attack he lands on the opponent while the buff state is active meaning he can in theory get a much higher level counter hit off of his 5P or 2K than he otherwise would without the buff

It's kinda a replacement for unblockables which have been all but entirely removed in Strive (for example, Johnny has guard crush instead of unblockables) as well as a way to enable true 50/50 strike throw mixups without fuzzy options as a possibility.

Guard crush doesn't guarantee a command grab except in cases where the grab works on airborne opponents (pot can get heavenly guaranteed if he has meter for it + RC heat knuckle on block for example). Otherwise you can just hold up to avoid the grab.

I think the universe counter hit functions like a R.I.S.C. counter hit. Slayer combos off of uncharged dust (which sends the opponent straight up like a R.I.S.C. counter) using a universe counter hit, as well as attacks doing 30% extra damage. Super Mappa Hunch seems like a pretty low damage super. It only takes Nago to just before the N in his name, and it is out damaged slightly by universe pilebunker, which takes Nago to halfway through the N. Still seems like a good move though, given that it is a fast, fullscreen, invincible attack. Just surprisingly low damage for a super.
