And honestly, from watching this the UK bureaucracy seems even worse than ours in Germany is and we already always meme around about how unnecessary everything seems to be. I’m so sorry Evan. We’re terrified about trying to sell our flat because of that form. Our service charges and rent are rising but our wages are frozen and I don’t know how we’re going to carry on affording it but we won’t be able to sell. The whole situation is horrific. I truly hope your situation is cleared now and you can start 2022 happy, healthy and warm in a place of your own. This year will become a bad memory swiftly forgotten under brilliant new ones in your flat.

I recently moved to and bought a home in Japan, and it was a unique experience to say the least. Comparatively to buying a home in the US it was simultaneously much harder and much easier in opposite ways. Some things were mind numbingly silly, but its just the way it's done here forever , while some things were so simple I wish the US would do it. I just do my best to smile and stumble through it all and learn not to have preconceived expectations. I can totally relate to what you are going through, hang in there Evan,

Evan we have so much in common! I moved to the UK from Florida in 2017 to pursue my MA in Environmental Law. I also applied for a mortgage back in August and I've JUST received my mortgage offer as of 3 weeks ago! Now you just have to go thru the conveyancing which let me tell you is an utter nightmare also and takes 2-3 months. So Unfortunately I doubt you'll be in your flat before Christmas as the lawyers are just nightmarishly slow at responding or conveyancing. But there is light at the end of the tunnel! We'll get there in the end :) I so agree with everything you said about British bureaucracy and customer service. It's truly nightmarishly horrible. At least my mortgage brokers (LandC) were absolutely amazing (thanks Hassan!!!)

Hope it works out Evan! I'm in the proces of buying my first house, and my issues (so far) were all at the getting an offer accepted stage - So much competition this year for any house round here! Finally I got one (by offering well over the asking price) and despite some potentally serious issues, my lender sent an offer through with little fuss. Now my homebuyer survey report has come through with a few more red flags than I was hoping for. Fun times. It's certainly not an easy process, and I feel for you with the nightmare you've had to contend with! Good Luck!

Such a rollercoaster 😥! I can sympathise as I’m currently in a bureaucratic nightmare in selling my parents place and my place and buying one place just me and mum together. My place is shared ownership which has its own challenges. My dad passed away last year and we’ve had solicitors contacting my grieving OAP mum asking for reasons why he isn’t involved in the sale 😡! They paid their mortgage off over 10 years ago but the bank didn’t update the Land Registry and it’s still showing as having a mortgage on it. The banks files are all in archive so we’ve had to request them to prove it’s been paid. I’m now off sick from work as, like you, I’m just drained with all the nightmare of ringing people on the daily and places only open office hours when I’m supposed to be working and my mental health has just crashed. Also the whole grieving process and packing up my parents place and then we had to have my 16yo cat pts last month it’s just been a whole thing 😔. We wanted to be in the new place by Christmas and we’re starting to lose hope now too ☹️ Try and keep your chin up. I’ll be thinking about you x

Problem of UK mortgages is just the delays. For no reason. Whenever they need paperwork from you, you have to immediately rush to send/up load info within hours. But the amount of stuff that takes days and weeks because mortgage companies/ conveyancers/ solicitors just sit on their hands through lack of proactively is horrific. You are paying to chase your own mortgage. Felt like taking a commission cut from everyone for the work I did to speed everyone up. BTW, if the lender was Pl*****m, I share your pain....

The house buying process usually isn't this complicated! I've done it twice, now for flats & with a decent lender\broker & conveyancer it's actually possible for everything to go well. Seriously, the types of calls you're putting in to the fire guy should be getting done either by your broker or conveyancer - this shouldn't be you doing any of this, otherwise what are you paying for?!

I never bought property in the uk, but I did my law degree there and married a brit with every expectation of settling permanently. I absolutely agree with everything you said about bureaucracy being rampant and run by sloths. it made my blood boil when I lived there, made worse for the fact that whenever I complained about it people who had never lived anywhere else could not comprehend what I was complaining about. that frustration of being told on one phone call that everything's fine and sorted and then 5 minutes later you find out it's not, and the circular finger pointing, and never being able to get the correct information for your situation are things I've experienced as well, to the extent that it affected my degree classification and my ability to stay in the country. one of my housemates in uni had a misunderstanding with our uni admin and they gave her this bullshit runaround for over a year, during which she wasn't allowed to enroll but was still billed for tuition. I can't even imagine how horrible it would be in your situation, literally depending on these clowns to have a stable place to live. it's a testament to your character that you've made it through this especially coming into winter which is depressing in itself. I hope you take some time off once you're moved in to let the stability of owning your own place sink in, and heal from this experience. anyway I just wanted to let you know your frustration is valid and you're not the only one who thinks the uk is as bad as vogsphere.

As someone who has never tried to buy a house, I can't believe all of this you've been put through! It's truly insane. What would've happened if you weren't able to continue living in airbnbs? You would've been out on the streets. It's awful and feels like the classic UK attitude of 'oh you're gonna be homeless? but you didn't have the documents so it's your own fault.' I'm glad you're using your platform and influence to try and spread awareness about this issue.

My last house move in England was super stressful and messy and I did not even need a mortgage! I understand how you feel.

OMG! It's a pain in the arse for self employed people to get mortgages! I've been self employed for over 20 years and still looked at differently to those employed. Not sure why? Even with a good credit score, my life story is needed. Hope everything gets sorted.

Oh god that seemed so stressful🙈 in the UK if you need anything done you have to keep on their back, its not the way things should be. Im so relieved for you it all worked out in the end, enjoy your new home🎄

Absolutely. To be fair, after a cumulative 20 hours of hold time in the past month, the genuine kindness I got to experience from the lender's customer support team was a breath of fresh air.

The US is backwards on a lot of things but the home buying process is much easier and simplified. 30 days from offer to closing. I dread buying in England.

Damn, man. Fucking hell idk how you did it (the sheer executive fuction to be able to go through all that exhausted me to listen about it, can't imagine how low your battery must be). But hey. You did it! Dragon slayn! Congrats! I can't wait for you to finally move into a permanent home, and also am very curious about that piece on the scandal thing! CONGRATS AGAIN!!

Oh my goodness what a mess! I work in architecture so I'm aware of the cladding issues and how much of a pain (although somewhat needed pain) it can be. I'm also right at the beginning of my own mortgage journey and I am dreading anything horrendous happening. I'm so glad you're nearing the end of this! Buying a property is stressful, and buying a flat in London as a lone, self employed person makes that so much more difficult.

I am so so sorry Evan, this is so painful. It shouldn't be this bad for anyone. It broke my heart to see you nearly in tears. A sad heads up, once you have a mortgage agreed it doesn't get passed in a week but this is ridiculous x

I literally just secured my living situation here in France (Literally waiting to sign the lease while watching this video)! I lived in an airbnb for 3 months before I was finally able to find a place. I'm glad things are looking up for you. Hopefully we both are settled in our new homes by christmas

Clusterf*ck indeed. I've been following your mortgage journey the past few months and my conclusion is that it *almost* feels easier to rob a bank than get a mortgage in the UK. Best case scenario: you have a lot of suspicious cash to buy the house. Worst case scenario: you go to prison for a long time. But in that case you don't have to move between Airbnb's all the time.🤔
