In the 80s my mum would take my brother and I with our toys and colouring books to sit in the solicitors waiting room until paperwork was done. Apparently young children with the potential to be noisy influences the speed that the solicitor worked 🤣

I feel your waiting-for-house stress. These things can really drag on. I had months and months of it after my house sale was agreed. Still had the terrors that it would all fall through until some point during the actual move day. The elation and utter relief once it all eventually happend was unbelievable.

This just sounds so crazy! Where I'm from, you talk to your bank before getting into the buying process, and get a loan promise for a maximum amount (based on your income, employment status, credit score and general financial status). THEN you start looking, and once you've found a place, you convert the promise into an actual loan. Takes a few days, and then it's done and you're the new owner.

You can get what's called an agreement in principle in the UK before you've found anywhere to buy. Basically a bank will say what they would potentially lend you based on your financial position, but it's not a guarantee.

5 months of being strung along is not right, even with the UK mortgage market. Once you get to the end of this process you need to be careful with your charges, especially those from the broker. You should take the time now to read through the broker contract - making notes - to make sure that they don’t try charging you for things that you shouldn’t have to pay. Possibly also demand a discount for their inability to move things along at a reasonable pace. Having this amount of instability constantly in the background is not good for both mental health and also the decision making process.

I empathize so much with this, had a very similar experience (gaslighting, continuous postponing, lack of communication, etc) but with a potential employer that did not end well. It was absolutely brutal and what I hated most is that I was either waiting (holding onto the smallest shred of hope that rationally made no sense) or being disappointed with further updates or new problems. During this terrible unstable process, I found that talking and relying on my loved ones really helped ground me and not spiral. Also just incessantly giving myself pep talks and emotionally checking in consistently helped as well. Take care of yourself during these times and I hope this all ends very soon for you!!

We feel you Evan, we’re currently first time buyers, 7 months in to a simple 3-person chain. The property at the end of the chain has been empty for 2 months now. We have a 7 month old baby and I’ve had to postpone my knee surgery waiting for these lazy solicitors. Standard practice seems to be to send an enquiry and then disappear for a month. Constant prompting required with feeble excuses and making constant mistakes, very poor attitude and we have been told multiple times that we can just go and find another solicitor if we are unhappy despite being at completion point (for over 2 months now). If you treated customers like this in any other job you would have been fired a long time ago. Hang in there bro, we will get through this. They will not defeat us!

@thepeanutgallery1699 3 жыл бұрын
@@phoebethegreat6253 As long as you're moving/cycling the clothing and it's in the light, it should be ok, but I had a *lot* of bolts of wool. It's not the moths themselves, it's eggs/larva that will eat their way out, I believe. And it's not all moths, it's the tiny little white clothes moths. Regardless, like Evan, I now have a phobia of what *could* happen which may seem a bit over-the-top but is a triggering reality. The other thing that freaks me the f*** out is fleas. Usually they'll bite you and move on outside, and they're not usually an issue with today's preventative meds, but after you've grown up with an infestation problem with the old family dog in the 80's where fleabomb after fleabomb wouldn't rid the house of the problem, you have a permanent PTSD response to anything that itches or resembles a potential flea problem. 5 dogs later I've never had a flea problem since, but it's still a terrifying thought.

Filling in forms and getting them witnessed for us to be told something is wrong and it must be done again. At the moment we have had 2 weeks of nothing while our Solicitor deals with a cyber attack. We should have been moving in on Friday but we now have no idea what’s happening. I can’t wait for the day when everything is sorted and I am sitting with my feet up and nothing to worry about. We have done the complete opposite of you and are moving 2 hours away from London and commuting in. Feel your pain over the house stress - it's truly a horrible process! We finally completed on our house last month, and the whole process was just one complication after another. The final couple of insults were exchange taking over a week to actually happen. This left 2 days between exchange and completion, at which point we found out our broker hadn't actually covered the full cost of the property in our mortgage. Too late to reapply for the right amount, so we had to find another £2k to stop it from all falling apart. But I promise, it is DEFINITELY worth it once you're in. Good luck and try to stay positive (hard as that is).

In my 40 years living in the UK in 12 very varied property types. I have seen many moths in my home, but never had a problem with them. They are less of an issue now a days as we use more man made fabrics. But in the days when all clothes and carpets etc were natural fibres and much more expensive they were a massive issue as their larvae eat natural fibres. A lot of British people associate the smell of moth balls with old people as that generation are more likely to have natural fibres and use moth balls.

Waiting without having control over your life is terrible and I think you are handling the situation really well. A few tings that went through my head while watching: Moths and their larvae can be killed by putting the clothing item in the freezer over night. Or outside, if it's freezing. Some people recommend 60s in the microwave. I'm not sure I would risk it, myself. Regarding the pizza photo - I am not a professional photographer in the slightest but from a consumer point of view, I'd suggest trying to not show the grease stains. I found they make it look unappetizing.

Me, throughout this video: I'm genuinely worried about Evan's mental health. Evan: *Pulls out giant packet of biscuits* Me: Aww, he's going to be fine 🙂 Might be the most British thing I've ever said. Anyway, I've only started following you recently but I genuinely hope you're OK.

Man, this made me stressed FOR you! I'm sorry it's been so much longer and messier of a process than you hoped. Here's hoping you were right and you've had your last delay. (And I am SO glad that refinancing at the end of a fixed-term is not the same hassle as getting into it in the first place. We've been in our house for 5 years now and refinancing was a breeze compared to getting into the place.)

This may not be relevant, or you might be past caring, but I wonder if you could make a complaint to a consumer protection agency or relevant professional accreditation body. From what you've described, it seems an unreasonably arduous process. Hang in there!
