The same happened to my 1999 C4. Very easy fix, impulse speed sensor. I found the diagnosis online. Stopped running when hot, but turns over. Starts when cools down.

It is quandary: to use or not use a 40 Jahre! Mine now nearing 120,000 miles. I can’t resist. Hope we meet up one day!

I had the same problem.... The engine DOES NOT need to come out to do the crank position sensor --- I did this job myself in 20min. My problem ended up being the fuel sending unit.

I hadn't heard you say before that you bought this as more of an investment, but I assumed as much.I think standard C4S's will be on the up at some point too.

Really enjoyed the piece to camera in the 40 year, especially seeing the dog which showed off a different side to the usability of the vehicle. I’ll have to now explain to my wife why I need two 911s following your logic of having a special one “for best”… wish me luck!

Good call. Seeing the dog in the back will help sell the wife on a 996.

Engine doesn't need removed to replace crank sensor. Easy to do anyway and no need to do other things. That's a choice.

Blocked cooling? a stuck thermostat or something? It sounds like the issue is heat-dependent. I'd flush the system and run a line through it. Engine out job is always a big deal. FYI I had the brake pipes done without removing the engine -- not me - but it can be done.

Looks like it is running hot anyway? I had cooling mods done(gt3 waterpump and thermostat relocation) and mine doesnt get above 80c ever. Looks like Lee is running way above that

I had the same problem with my 2000 Boxster, my crank sensor was bad. You could see it on the Tach gauge, normaly you will see about 200rpm while cranking before start. When parked hot and aint restart you could not see any movement on the Tach gauge. Change the sensor without engine out. Everything fine since 5 years now. Good luck finding the fault

So annoying to deal with problems but you have to have some patience for them. I hope you get it sorted, soon!

Fuel pump and crank sensor are the most common cause of your symptoms and in that order of frequency. But Nick at PCB is probably on the right track. Your symptoms of intermittent engine cutout and refusal to start, combined with the noise at the front of the car, will almost certainly point at an evap problem (causing negative pressure in the tank) often combined with a weak fuel pump not able to deal with the negative pressure on one side of the pump, with the high pressure it is trying to develop on the high-pressure side of the pump. Normally the evap problem is down to one of the two control valves, one called a shutoff valve and the other called a purge valve, which many call both a "purge valve". Both a quick and simple fix and easy to diagnose, especially if the noise from the front is repeatable, even if the engine cutting out is not. The original fuel pumps are failing more frequently since ethanol has crept into our fuels in recent years in the UK (even in super unleaded fuels contrary to what many think) All of this is based on my experience of being a Porsche technician with my own business just up the road from Nick at PCB for about 35 years, but it could be something else, such as the DME having a dry joint or the MFI relay having a dry solder joint or overheating.

Hopefully something simple and inexpensive. Another chap mentioned that he thought it was likely the impulse speed sensor.

Hope you manage to sort out the problem. Dont know if you talk about the same sensor, but on .2 crankshaft position sensor is an easy fix from underneath the car, one bolt one clip. Also looks like yours runs a bit hot. I'd consider low temp thermostat and radiator cleaning. Mine rarely goes above 82 in hot climate. Cheers
@bigmacdaddy1234

When a car is running hot, you are supposed to fix it and use the correct thermostat. You are not supposed to run a low temp thermostat as a fix.
@9WERKSTV
@9WERKSTV Жыл бұрын
Thanks, it already had the low temp thermostat in place. Unlike when I installed it one my .2, in the .1 it keeps temps cooler when the car is moving, but in traffic it has always got a little hot…

You've gotta learn how to drop the engine yourself. I've dropped my 930 many times - by myself - with only a floor jack and I believe the 996 is about the same. It's the ultimate bonding experience with your Porsche and you save tons of moola! Anyway, I hope it's an easy fix.

Have you looked at the battery cables? I had a similar hot start issue on a 996 C2 that was cured with replacing these, again not a cheap repair due to labour.

Worrying they don’t know how to diagnose a common 996 issue. I had a crank sensor go at 70mph down a duel carriage way - car felt like it got a shunt, lights on dash flash and went out and then the car totally cut out. Once the car cools it works again as that crank sensor shrinks and grows with heat - that’s how it works. I got it correctly diagnosed over the phone by the leading 996 garage in the U.K (be nice to see them featured in this channel). Williams Crawford was the nearest garage to the breakdown and they replaced the crank sensor within an hour as you can simply change it from underneath. It’s a circa £150 job. Even if it doesn’t need doing the crank sensor is a very wise replacement part as one day it’ll cut out when driving and could be dangerous, so for the little money, treat it as a wear item and drive with peace of mind.

With the ducktail spoiler, a 996 rear looks somewhat similar to the 928’s butt.
@longtailgt
@longtailgt Жыл бұрын
Hey Lee, I've a question for you. Do you think you would you ever remove the ducktail and revert back to the standard electric spoiler? I think the standard rear silhouette is an iconic look and, at least in my opinion, the ducktail doesn't suit it (or any modern 911 tbh) that well. I think the 996 would look far nicer without the ducktail. Just something I was wondering about. Hope Lil' Irish gets fixed soon!

I had a crank angle sensor go on one of my Alfas I was turning right off the North Circular and even made it onto the radio due to the biblical traffic jam. It does happen and crank sensors can cause an intermittent fault. I managed to limp 200 miles back to Lancashire.

Odd that your garage thinks the engine needs to come out to replace the crank position sensor, there are a few videos on KZbin showing how to do it without dropping the engine....
