Continuing to Clapham Junction makes sense. There's a lot of money to be spent. Also CJ is very busy and thus would increase that. So at least a 9 figure sum (£100m+) really needs to be spent there. Escalators, new wide overpass with coffee and other shops, improved signage, etc. Once completed, you can fly into Gatwick and just one change onto the Northern line.

I would love for TfL to build the station as a big box, similar to Canary Wharf, but square. Makes total sense not to extend it to Clapham Junction, models found that trains will fill up at Clapham Junction and not serve the new development properly, defeating the point of the extension. Relief for trains from Clapham Jn into Central London will come with Crossrail 2. Because TfL found that an extension to Clapham Junction was not feasible almost instantly, the capacity upgrade at Camden Town has nothing to do with it and is only relevant to operationally splitting the line in 2.

Amazing video. Perhaps rename Battersea Power Station to East Battersea or Battersea East as it’s to the east of Battersea Park. I do hope that the Northern Line might extend to Clapham Junction which is already a busy interchange station where London Overground meets with National Rail (South Western Railway and Southern). Plus I think that the Northern Line to Clapham Junction could be proposed when Crossrail 2 does get the go ahead with a new twin tunnel portal being built to the north of Wimbledon station.
@DavidShepheard4 жыл бұрын
I hope they don't. It's really annoying when the estate agents and property developers trying to gentrify London erase the local history by changing the name of a place. The original case of this is Clapham Junction, where the builder's of the station didn't want to admit it was in Battersea, so pretended it was in Clapham. There have been several attempts to get the Battersea Power Station demolished by stealth. Locals have had to fight to stop it getting pulled down. Battersea Power Station is an iconic landmark. Everyone knows where it is.

Camden Town in its current state makes that an impossible suggestion. To separate the Northern line, you'd have to completely rebuild Camden Town so that the two lines don't cross each other, which simply isn't the case at the moment. Currently, either central branch can access either Northern branch, which would limit capacity on both lines, so it's best for now to keep it as one line. But rebuild Camden Town, and you're onto something.

It has never had an Underground service, the nearest being the District Line at Putney and Southfields and it never had a Green Line service in their heyday. It is definitely the poor relation in local transport and has seen its bus services cut back drastically in terms of mileage and other places served. It is crying out for an Underground and or Tram service but is ignored every time. Obviously the Wandsworth Councillors don't give a toss!!!

@madandy31764 жыл бұрын
Why the bigger tunnels? If they were concerned with safety they would not even think to run trains packed with people into blocked tunnels so if a train breaks down or the power goes then people can walk either back or forwards to a station. If you get the Victoria Line in the rush hour the trains are totally cram-packed and one behind the other so there are at least two stops between stations. I heard somebody describe it as them risking passenger safety by kettling people onto trains in tunnels because they,would not all fit on the over-crowded platforms. I mean, in Summer they advise us to take bottles of water onto the tube. Right? Let us take a reality check here. It's 1-2 minutes ride between pretty well every station underground which is in no way a hazard meriting such advice, so it follows that this advice indicates a deliberate police of putting passengers at risk by overcrowding trains in tunnels.

I went to London about a fortnight ago (before the coronavirus restrictions really took hold) and found no mention of this new bit of Northern Line on the tube maps - surely by now they'd have the new branch in dotted lines with the caption 'Under construction: due to open 2021'.

Right now, Camden Town is the only station where the two lines connect but aren't separate (Kennington and Euston both have separate rails for separate branches of the Northern line). (This is just LUL/LUL near-misses. There are many more involving NR, Overground and DLR.)

Why was the Kennington loop necessary when trains the world over can just drive back in the other direction? Are there not enough lines of track or points at the station or something? Insightful answers appreciated, cheers!
@frediculousbiggs14 жыл бұрын
It's because the Charing Cross branch platforms are on the "outside" of the Bank branch platforms, allowing a cross-platform interchange when travelling south or north. The only way of doing this is by having a loop. It can be seen here: carto.metro.free.fr/cartes/metro-tram-london/index.php?gpslat=51.487242&gpslon=-0.10117&zoom=5

@Wasserfeld.4 жыл бұрын

Any reason why is wasn't extended somewhere useful like Clapham Junction?
@jamesebrown20434 жыл бұрын
Why more underground interchanges? Like through Chelsea Line as Crossrail2, and there's more; Waterloo & City line terminates + underground depot sidings at Clapham junction from Waterloo. Well Waterloo & City line goes from Waterloo to Lambert North, North-West Kennington, Vauxhall, Nine Elm's, Battersea Park South-east where btw Battersea park STN of Southern rail + Overground and Queenstown Road by South-Western Railway, then Clapham West where a town picks somewhere like High St of shops, and finally Clapham junction terminates, see. That's why someone plan was, (like me).
@Wildcard714 жыл бұрын
From Battersea to Clapham would be an even smaller step than the extension itself. More ideas: removing Circle Line and run the Metropolitan Line beyond Aldgate to High Street Kensington Watford bypass (Metropolitan Line, already officially mentioned) Bakerloo extension to New Cross gate; proposal: take over the Lewisham to Hayes Line Central Line extension to Greenford via Drayton Green
@jamesebrown20434 жыл бұрын
@@Wildcard71 It just one problem thought; how do we get all-a-way through to High St Kensington from Aldgate from Metropolitan Line if there has enough room platform lengths against S8 as 8 cars because all Circle + District lines manage S7 as 7 cars of platform length fits with via Victoria station. So how do we get there for more information? Figures, why do we use Metropolitan Line 7 cars of S7? Anything else you want say or don't want to whatever you like?

I think their point is that the stations on either side (of the 1/2 station) are both in zone 1 (W'loo and 9 Elms, High St Ken and Bayswater). I don't think that's the case on either side of Earl's Court.

The Northern Line needs splitting like the Metropolitan Line. The Hammersmith to East London section is now the Hammersmith & City Line, with Aldgate serving as the Met's southeastern terminus.

"You're not allowed to ride the Kennington loop". Actually, you are. That's why it exists - it was upgraded to be safe for passenger transport and that's why they don't chuck you off the train at Kennington like they do at every other terminus.

@@SimulatorTobi I've checked the working timetables and each terminating train waits at Kennington (crawling round the loop) for 7 or 8 minutes before heading back. I can't tell how much of this time spent in the departing platform, but it would probably be faster on foot.

It seems strange that they had the TBMs in the ground pointed in the right direction and didn’t dig through to Clapham Junction. Platforms and interchange could have come later. I guess they would have had to dig under the lines their and that would have added risk. Still.

Good to see London is building plenty of housing that the average Londoner can't afford. Kind of like here in San Francisco. er. I mean across the Bay in SF. I was forced out by SKYROCKETING rent and landowner greed [those who own homes know that by keeping the supply tight, their property gains a LOT more value- so they always come out in force when density increases are proposed.]

So is it going to be called Battersea, like you have shown on the maps, or Battersea Power Station, which would just be ridiculous ... (a) the power station won't be there any more, (ii) there are no other rail stations called Battersea so why does it need a suffix, and (3) Battersea Power Station station is plain silly?
@paulkennedy87014 жыл бұрын
There are no other stations called JUST "Battersea". However, there is Battersea Park and Queens Road Battersea. They may think that having one WITHOUT a "suffix" might cause confusion. Especially if the undifferentiated one is a NEW one. There are 4 Kensingtons but none that is JUST "Kensington". The same with the 5 Ealings, the 6 Harrows and the 7 Actons.
@jacksugden81903 жыл бұрын
Shame there will be no direct service via Bank, think due to this, it’s a floored service if you want a direct train to Battersea, in the end it was just one of those things.
