Real talk... A great question surrounding a very important topic. How does the world perceive autism and other disabilities when considering the age of the autistic person? There's two parts (more than two actually) to that answer. It's better...but also worse.

This definitely made me realize/think about that all parents/teachers/etc. need to be informed and inform their children about Autism. My Goddaughter is Autistic, but hers is different than Abbie’s… that being said I’ve been semi familiar with autism for 20 years, but the past few years since I found your channel my eyes have been opened so much more! I can’t tell you enough how glad I am to have found your channel and how wonderful y’all are and how much I enjoy your videos!

Something I really love about your family is how patient, understanding, and kind you all are to everyone. You've been a great role model for me over the years and it definitely means so much to me in my growth as a young adult.

Last year during lockdown in spain the police molested a man; people were screaming from their balcony“ he’s sick stop beating him” after a while his older mother came running and she sreamed “ loco, loco” I was very mad and cried like a baby. Those scumbag police need to be better educated.

After watching the body cam footage of that young man's horrifying encounter, I (special education teacher to adult students, many on the spectrum) am working with my district SRO's (school resource officers) to try to develop a training for students on how to interact with police officers. This collaboration is also working to better educate police on recognizing differences between individuals with cognitive impairment vs potential substance abuse.

I just want to say thank you for everything that you do. From the bottom of my heart, thank you. I am a teacher at a private inclusive education school. We need people to advocate for the non/pre/less verbal population. I've been seeing so much advocation from the verbal, loud, and proud which is AMAZING, but I think their needs and experiences can be different from those on other parts of the spectrum and I don't want the voices of our less verbal population to be watered down. You have built such a huge platform and I am SO thankful for how you use it. Thank you.

As a parent without a child on the spectrum, I feel it’s very important for all of us to know these things. I know I would like to help in my community. Little different but we just had a older lady here in Loveland CO that was tased and attacked by the police and she has Dementia. The officers involved have been fired(thank goodness). But it does show how bad we need to train our police better to handle those types of situations.

Troopah!! 🤗 I've followed y'all for years and have never commented. I'm a retired ABA therapist and think y'all are awesome. I'm always amazed at how so much has changed with autism awareness yet so much stays the same. Our schools here have inclusion programs etc where all the students are around autism everyday and are educated about autism. Starting in the elementary schools, then these kids all know each other through middle and high school. These kids end up educating their parents and so the ripple effect begins. Why don't all schools have these programs? Back in the day, we had to fight to be able to bring a shadow into the class for an autistic student that we had to fight to get them into mainstream classrooms. So I know a lot has changed, but the ignorance of people never ceases to amaze me. 🤦🏼‍♀️ It was heart breaking what was done to that young man. Awareness! Awareness! Awareness! Thank you for all that you do.

Trooper! Thank you for taking the time to talk about this topic, I really appreciate it 😊 I found it interesting how in some ways it's gotten easier as Abbie has gotten older in terms of people being aware. It makes sense how with kids it could seem like they're just misbehaving. Also, side note, I was SHOCKED when I first saw the video and saw my comment lol. I was trying to focus on the video but was also freaking out internally! Thanks again for all you do. It's really important to see a teenage perspective. Most of my experience has been with kids on the spectrum and I'm not sure if it's just me but it seems that often there is more focus on kids. Take care!

Trooper. That was an interesting question, thanks for addressing it. The questions and your answer made me think about society and the general reactions of people: Younger children, people think the child is having a meltdown or is a brat and should “know better” on how to behave in public. Teenage, people more accepting or have a better awareness that the person has a “non-typical” form of communication/interaction with others. Late teen, adult concern or early judgement about person having a substance abuse issue possibly split with maybe people also being more aware.

I have a friend who got me to watch your channel, and it has helped me understand her child and one of my cousins who has autism. When I was told what they had I didn't understand . I worked as a relief teacher in daycare and came across youth (kids) who have similar issues and they were not getting the help or support from professionals due to waiting list, time, money, resources, education on it. I am now a scout leader who would like to see more education/training support for all people learning about the disability community.

Recently while stuck in the ft Lauderdale airport for an extra 6 hours, I befriended a amazing young man and his brother. He was getting very anxious due to one delay after another. I hope that by us chatting, he was able to relax and forget, at least for a few moments, about the delay. This young man and his incredible brother absolutely made my wait shorter. I wish I had made the effort to get contact information. I’d love to see and chat with them both again. 💖

I have a different situation. My 2 children were born with physical disabilities. I was concerned that if there was something to happened either of my kids at anytime. We wanted both the police and fire department to be aware of where they were in our home so that they would be able to help them first. They had at that time put the kids information on their call out board. This was way before the big breakout is social media. Now it is in their system when any calls come from our number and address. It didn’t hurt anything to use the disable card at all. You are just trying to get information to help other kiddos, young ladies and young me as well as parents. Like you said you are not using it just to benefit for Abbie and your situation. I appreciate all of your content as you have taught me so much. I do have a now 20 year Olson the spectrum. He doesn’t get the social cues to feel that he needs to think about what he is saying or doing. He is very smart and it was also very smart. I think that all the home special needs need to enjoy being out while supervised. We all have to use the bathroom at some time. We are all doing our best along the way. I try to be non judge mental about what is going on with the individual with Autism. The parents are just trying to get a loaf of bring and some milk. I would hear so many comments about what my son was doing and that we needed to take him hope and enforce him to not to act that way around others. Your doing great!

Trooper, and I totally get what you are saying. I was personally judged so much more when my daughter was young and at times people were downright mean about it. The really sad part about it is that some of the people who judged me most harshly were people who knew exactly what the issues were. Some of them were even family. These family members who did decide to judge and were the first ones to tell me how wrong I was doing it, also happened to be the same people who would spend a couple of hours watching her for me while I ran errands or something, and by the time I got home, they looked like they needed a few stiff drinks and a couple of tranquilizers lol. In most cases, it only took them one time. After they spent a few hours with her alone I have never been criticized by them again. You really do have to live it to get it. I do understand though. I have known her longer than anyone else on the planet and I know her better, but there are times when she makes even me crazy lol.

The real troopers are you, the parents. Thank you for always teaching us all a thing or 10! I have worked as a 1:1 aide for a high functioning child with autism and like you said autism doesn't have a "look". To see him as a child you wouldn't know thst there was a difference until a moment happened and then there was somw rocking or mumbling and pacing. As a 4ft 65lb 2nd grade child he appeared to be having a temper tantrum but, view these same mannerisms in a 16 yr old 5'10" young man and it now looks like a possible threat. I know nothing about what goes into law enforcement training but maybe there needs to be one that teaches a little about Autism. The safety of young adults with developmental disorders need to be represented more. ❤

Trooper!!!…I just wanted to say u guys are awesome, incredible & are super inspiring!! I have a background in nursing, & started watching you guys about 3-4 years ago now, so I could learn more about autism…I have learned SO much, have watched every single video since, & I think, have almost become part of the furniture! Lol!!😂 I’m no longer working due to a workplace injury (occupational hazard), but, u have inspired me to look into the education the police have here in Australia, where I am. I’m more than happy to help distribute & share knowledge! Knowledge is such a powerful thing!!! In some local area commands or LAC’s (what they call them here), they have mental health clinical nurse consultants/specialists, imbedded with the LAC’s that work directly with the police & attend “incidents” that are suspected/confirmed to be “mental health related”. They aren’t imbedded with every police LAC tho-unfortunately, that resource is usually only available in large cities such as Sydney (2 hrs drive south of me)…but I’m not sure they would have a lot of experience with autism-as you have said, autism is a different thing to say serious mental illness like schizophrenia, bipolar, etc. I know u guys aren’t family-but it feels like you are, &, as a result, u have made me think of other families here where I am with autism-what if it was my kiddo or family member with autism?…I would want the police here to be aware…I don’t know how aware of autism the police are where I’m at…I would like to know. Autism is global, not just where you guys are in the states…U have got me thinking as to what I can do to get the message out here, locally. I have a bit of down time now as I’ve been medically retired, so I will most definitely look into what is available here in the way of resources for the police in regards to autism. Again, more than happy to pass on any knowledge/& your collective “autism community” parenting experience (I very much know you are linked in with, & are part of an incredible autism parenting community with the Brazee’s, Wee’s & many others-not to mention ur connections with a dedicated team of autism specialists/professionals…AND “team Abbie” of course!!!) What an awesome collection of powerful “resources” & information that could make such a difference to autism awareness & acceptance-not just locally for you guys in the states, but globally as well!!!❤️

I loved watching this video. 🙂 I am an education assistant in a K - 5 elementary school in Canada. Since beginning my career it seems that the teachers I have worked with do you not have enough knowledge of disabilities (“autism, ADHD etc.). I wish there was more training made available for teachers and education assistants. It would be useful to have training every year so that educators could keep their knowledge and skills relevant and up to current practice standards. Mary

TROOPER ❤ I think a video would be the best way to go about things. Show all types of people/kids on the spectrum. I would make sure to share with all the small town police departments around us in Southern Ohio.

I really commend y’all for getting all of this info out for us. I think it is very important that the police learn the proper way to identify what the “situation” is. I pray that the people that be pay attention to you 💜💜. AFTER THE BEEP…. I was having a cocktail and happened to look through my glass as I watched. Was an interesting view 🤣🤪🥃 You guys are ROCK STARS!!

The people with developmental delays will learn how to do things by watching you doing repetitive things every day. Just like any “normal” child learns, you show them repeatedly how to walk and talk. Then one day they’re running everywhere and are talking none-stop! And you’re wondering why you ever taught them these skills. Lol But then on the other side of the coin … there are parents who wish their child could say just one word. We are all just want love and acceptance. And we ALL DESERVE IT!!! If you can be nothing but kind. Choose kindness🥰🥰🥰
