I usually set a cap of 3-4 weeks for major photo trips, and do a couple of those each year. Recent examples have included Iceland, Ireland, Canada, and Japan, and over the next few months I will be adding Scotland and Morocco to the list. For closer destinations, I usually limit trips to around two weeks; recent examples include Northern Spain, New Mexico and Death Valley.

Yes the color of the kislux is beautiful and it is a great decision, maybe one day they will add feet and straps. It would be nice to have a bigger bag during the colder months when we have to store gloves, beanies, scarves, etc…

I think the one piece you might be missing with the fStop Bag choice is the harness system. The Tilopa 50L is the "smallest" bag from fStop with proper padding in the harness. When I am carrying a lot of gear and/or will be walking a lot I use the Tilopa, not because I need the capacity but because I need the padding for comfort.

Now you have me thinking if I should try to downsize my camera bag a little more! I always feel like with the video gear though, I end up needing that little bit of extra space. Right now, my favorite bag to travel with is a 35L - but always that anxiety about if they will try to make me check it if the overheads are full - as it it just a bit too big for under the seat.

Always interesting to see what others use and their thought processes. I moved from the Lee filter system to the Kase system when I got the Nikon Z 14-24 lens because it has the best filter holder for this lens and eliminates the need for a specialist 105 mm screw-in filter. I tried the Nisi system on loan first but found I got colour casts with the ND filters.

Mine (authentic) also has a smell inside! I don't know what's going on because none of my other products have the smell of the kislux bag. Called LV and they said it is normal and I can wipe the inside with a damp cloth. I thought the lining was suede but it's actually microfiber so I'm going to look for ways to remove the microfiber smell because the smell is keeping me from using it often.

Thank you again for another wonderful video. The three lenses are brilliant. I have the f-mount version of the 14-24 lens and it is a beast, but what a wonderful lens it is. The other two are, in my opinion, one of the best lenses that Nikon makes and covers such a great focal range. The combination of all three is perfect. I hope you have a safe trip, enjoyable trip. I'm jealous because they are two locations that I would love to visit someday. Stay safe and look forward to future videos.

Amazing what you were able to get in such a small bag. I’ve decided to try out using a sling bag for my trip to the Sienna Awards in late September. After a few orders and returns to Amazon, I found one that comfortably fits my Z7ii with the 28-400 mounted and the 17-28 and filter kit. I won’t be hiking long distances so can hand carry the tripod. This is easily the least I’ve ever taken on a trip.

There are some great magnetic filter sets which cover the nikon z really well. Maven makes amazing 112mm filters. If you carry a 112mm set and a 77-112 adapter u can filter all 3 of the lenses u mentioned on that set. Also if you go for any other 2.8 lenses. The hood for the 14-24/2.8 also fits on the 14-30/4, 24-70/2.8, 70-200/2.8, and 50/1.2

Nice Mark, I use a 45 liter hiking bag (can be extended another 10 liters) with camera bag inserts. I'll add a water bladder to that and put it in my duffel bag empty, then fill all other luggage in the duffel bag on top of that. In addition for carry-on I use a hardshell case with the camera geatr in the inserts. I'll hang the camera with long lens on my neck such that I have more space in the carry-on and I don't exceed the weight limit. This has been a successful combination of travelling to Iceland for some years now.

Caution regarding carrying the Small Rig multi tool in your camera bag through the airport. I had a similar almost identical tool made by Novoflex that was confiscated from my camera bag by airport security at the Sydney, Australia airport. Like the Small Rig tool, my tool only had screw driver type bits and did not include any knife blades. You may get away with it as I had on previous flights until the flight from Sydney.

An interesting dichotomy would be the gear for the trip vs the gear for the trail. and the weight difference. With the drone and electrical gear, I would think that they, together with the photo gear, would tax the musculskeletal system. Perhaps lugging the medium format set all those years got you in shape. :-)

Interesting. Begs the question of how many other bags are you bringing with you for clothes, computer, etc. My typical bags include a Pelican case for camera stuff, a backpack for computer, Kindle, medications, glasses, etc., & a large 4-wheel bag to check that contains tripod, a camera bag, clothing, jackets/rain gear, extra shoes, water btl. I can use the backpack or camera bag depending on how much stuff I need for the day. Backpack goes onto 4-wb.typically this is ~75# give or take depending on availability of laundries.

How do you transport such a big tripod? Even with my smaller lightweight 'pod, it is cumbersome to get it and my camera backpack into an overhead bin when the tripod is strapped to the outside of the bag. I usually take the head off the tripod to make it short enough to fit inside my bad.

If you're going to be gone that long, I'd say bring a second Z camera (even a Z6 II or Z7 II) as a backup. Unless you have lenses for your Fuji that could be used for landscape sooting, then you may not need a second Z body, but my big thing about traveling for photography is to always have a spare body (even an APSC body if you must, in a pinch) because I have been on trips with people, and they spend all this money on the trip (say $3000) and they have an issue with their camera and have to use their phone. Even if they had just rented a camera for bought a cheap secondary camera, it would have saved them the hassle (and one person told me now they have to go back because they missed some of the shots they wanted to get because of a camera problem). So, a little tip I learned from a pro a long time ago, is to have a backup camera body of some sort, particularly to places you may or may not revisit again, just to be prepared. But your kit is pretty much what I have (minus the 14-24, which I am using and sticking with the 14-30 for now, since I found that to upgrade to a the 14-24 it would cost me about $1200 at least if I sold it, and more like $1800 if I traded it in).

Hope you can answer this question: I've been reluctant to travel overseas because I'm not too sure about the rules regarding camera gear since 9-11. So my question is, if you use your camera bag as your overhead bin bag, do you take a separate suitcase for clothes; and how about your tripod? Basically, can you also go over your luggage so as to avoid hassles during check in? Thx!
@darrend5489
@darrend5489 5 ай бұрын
I and most people I know bring a suitcase that is (Checked luggage) and I normally put my tripod and ball head in there, there is a risk of course if they lose your luggage, then you won't have a tripod but perhaps you could (depending on the location ) buy a tripod on location if need be. My camera backpack would be my carry on luggage and I normally include one change of clothing and some basic toiletries.

I also use the Kase magnetic system and do like their NDs and CPL filters. If you have a clear/uv filter on all the time and use the Kase magnetic lens cap - it can be a bit fiddly to get the cap off without pulling the filter with it. I also use the NiSi metal lens hood with this setup. Quite like it. I use it primarily because the plastic Nikon hood seems kind of flimsy and if it broke on a long trip then I’d have no way to mount the filters.

I'm surprised you are traveling with only one camera body. Wouldn't you fell better if you had a backup? Even if you buy a cheaper model, it would make for a more successful trip than not getting any work done because your camera is dead in the water. Admittedly 40 years of TV production makes me a bit of a belt-and-suspenders kind of guy.

Good morning, Mark. I have enjoyed learning so much from you. I have a challenge for you, and it may require a bit of belief in unique things. Photographing the back side of the rainbow in perfect condition is not impossible. I based my theory on the facts that we can see sun dogs, rings around the moon, and the sun through thin clouds. I am unaware that such an image of the back side of a rainbow, meaning you are facing the sun, has been captured. I don't know how to reach you, so commenting on your video is best. Anyway, Let me know what you think. I have some images close to what I am describing and would like to share them with you. I am a novice, and what I captured could be a lens effect. I live in Hawaii at 1400sf facing north and see the sunrise. Often, there are rain squalls between the rising sun. On that particular day, the sun's rays shone under the clouds and lit the rain curtain. Since it was still dusk and dark clouds provided the background, I could see colors in my photos above the bright lights passing through the squalls. Sorry for going off your subject. Thank you so much for doing what you are doing. Aloha.

The truth is, these bags were all overpriced. Now that we know they cost a fraction of the sale price and are so poorly made, it’s clear they weren’t worth it. Furthermore, many of these items are knockoffs. There are a lot of knockoffs out there at kislux knockoffs of such good quality that they’re no longer luxury items.
