I use these clear pencil pouches to organize all the little things I want on the plane. Pen, gum, tissues, lip balm, wallet, anti-bac wipes, headphones, etc. I put it in the seat back pocket. At the end of the flight I wipe it to get the icky germs off and pack it back in personal item bag. I found large ones (11" x 8") on Amazon that even fit a paper back book or my e-reader. I find the seats so tight nowadays that it's hard to get things out of my bag once it's under the seat. I'm not a contortionist! I actually stow this bag in the big outside pocket of my wheeled suitcase and pull it out before putting the suitcase in the overhead bin.

After seeing this video, I followed the link for the backpack and ordered it. I absolutely LOVE it. I already have some backpacks, but none have the top opening like this or as many pockets. I also ordered compression cubes and other things you posted in your videos. I don't fly so much anymore but I take tour bus trips with groups, train trips and car trips. Your tips are just as appropriate for those, too. One item I always carry is a very large trash bag (33-gallon size) instead of an umbrella, to use as an emergency poncho in case of a heavy downpour. Since I carry small scissors, I can easily cut a face hole and slip it over my body, or split it down the side and wear it cape style. Love, love, love your videos & I'm guilty of binge watching the same ones over & over!!

Heading to France in September! If you are planning on using a backpack for your personal item and to carry during the day while on your trip, keep in mind many sites and attractions limit the size of backpacks. Museums in particular do this. The attraction’s website will most likely list this information so make sure to check. I’ve even seen museums list a size limit with no offer of a place store your oversized item. Just be prepared so you won’t miss out!
@lisamyers58243 жыл бұрын
Yes, this has been my experience as well. I'm from Philadelphia & several museums have a "no backpack" policy. I'm also packing a small waist pouch for my trips.
@SnowySpiritRuby3 жыл бұрын
@@lisamyers5824 The reason some (not necessarily all, but for sure some) places have a "no backpack" or "only small backpacks" policy is because people are less aware of how far they stick out when they have a backpack on as opposed to a purse (and thus are at greater risk of the backpack running into things on accident); if this is the case, putting a strap over one shoulder with the backpack hanging down at your side, like a purse, can sometimes circumvent the rule, since this type of rule is more for making sure people know where their bags are at all times and how far they stick out. Another reason some places have a "no backpack" policy is for security reasons - I don't actually understand this one myself (since a backpack can be tiny yet still forbidden, yet a purse or other crossbody bag can be huge yet still allowed), that's just what I was told when I asked about it for the Statue of Liberty (back when that trip was still supposed to happen last spring, 2020).
@lisamyers58243 жыл бұрын
@@SnowySpiritRuby yes the museum explained that people generally have no idea how far those backpacks stick out ( I'm sometimes definitely guilty of that 😏) . Good point on the size thing as well. Thank you.

I use my travelon crossbody bucket purse. You can roll it to fit in your luggage or lay it flat. It also holds my water and dslr camera. Small wallet and other essentials like chapstick, phone, etc. Many museums want the item in front of you. A backpack can knock things down. Some places let you wear your backpack in front. My husband went with a messenger bag instead of a backpack.

On travel day I add my iPad and water bottle oh and a sweater. Even with all of this I can slip in my crossbody and or wallet depending on where I am going. Has 2 outer stretch pockets for water bottle or umbrella and a front RFID pocket for wallet, passport, credit cards etc. Its now a more plasticized fabric too which makes it easier to clean. Plus it comes in really cute colors. Lastly, when I'm not traveling I use it to keep my art supplies organized just for taking to another room, or to take them to the senior center (where I teach a class) or to friends homes to do projects together. It also makes a super weekend bag of course, when you aren't flying. I also have a few Samantha Brown pieces for small trips when I pack very frugally. Her underseater is nice, but in my experience her stuff doesn't last that long. Even though they claim to warranty it, those pieces are always sold out so they never do end up replacing them! For the past 5 or 6 years I have been carrying a relatively large backpack I received from work as my personal item. It is shocking the amount of stuff I can put in there! And I don't really mind shoving it under the seat in front me and if needed, putting my feet on it; it's solid black and very sturdy. For someone thinking of getting a backpack, make sure you won't mind possibly mistreating it a bit; sometimes you may have to. Really appreciate all your tips and tricks, Laurie!

Buying that backpack. Thanks for the info! I, too, don't like a bottomless pit, dark bag. I need feet, a firm bottom, zippered closure so everything doesn't fall out, and LOVE the tiered storage for all our devices, magazines, books, and the water bottles. That thing is amazing!

Good information on travel bags. One more thing I've been doing for awhile now is I have a thin, very flat fanny pack around my waist for my essentials like ID, money, cards, meds, tickets. It's flat against me, unnoticeable under a jacket or top shirt. If I ever had to exit the plane in an emergency, it would stay with me, ( men get to keep wallets in their pockets). Owl brand is the one I use. Only $10 on Amazon last time I bought one. I'm on my second one in 10 years. Actually, I use it for my all around town "purse" or personal bag. Hands free, safe, and convenient.

Thank you Laurie for these awesome tips. The tip that has worked wonders are the lil pouches vs my previous toiletry bag. Visiting family in Metz and Lille, France next month. Depending on regulations we will cross into Belgium and/or Germany. For other viewers, you can do it! I’ve been carry on + personal for 5 years now. I’m a plus sized woman with large feet. I always pack 3 pairs of shoes, 2 pants, a skirt, a dress and at least 3 tops, cardigan, swim suit, undergarments and a large scarf and 1-2 small rfid purses and a few S hooks. BTW I traded my higher end 21” to the collapsible 19” ikea carry on. Loving it!

I also keep a small pouch with a few cleansing wipes, sample moisturizer, small makeup pallet, travel toothbrush, travel toothpaste, a few safety pins (different sizes), ear plugs, small individual eyedrops, and a travel hairbrush. I keep a small first aid kit and a small pouch with sanitizer wipes, 2 disposable masks, OTC meds such as Tylenol, Benadryl, etc. These items stay in my personal item bag at all times.

I need only a few liquid items (eye drops, etc) for in-flight but don't want to rifle through after TSA to pull the items out (or remember all that I need) so I have a snack size baggie inside my quart size baggie, then when I'm through I just pull out the snack size & put it in my personal item backpack. I just ordered a weekender bag similar to your striped one with the brown bottom, but mine is an animal print. I’m very excited to get it. I have recently decided that I love the hard shell carry on bags. Mine is hot pink and will go well with my new weekender because it has a splash of pink- anyway, I love that you can pack loads in the hard shell bag, and then squish it down and compress it, and zip it again! So great cause since it’s not cloth, there are fewer seams that might rip when compressed. Sorry for rambling, but love your tips😘 Anna
