This was a MASSIVE German Yellow Jacket colony inside a ceiling space behind a flooring joist. This colony was well into the 10,000 individual range and was absolutely PACKED with larvae and pupae
I pulled the nest out, and took it home, and fed it to my Emus, Rhea, Chickens, and Squirrel!

I wasn’t allergic when I was young. I used to get stung regularly as a kid because we spent the whole summer outdoors and I always liked to explore. Whenever the neighborhood kids discovered a nest (usually bald faced hornets) we would go to war with them. Attacking with rocks or firecrackers. So, anyway, when I was about 13, me and my cousins were in the woods in Pennsylvania when we accidentally stepped on a ground nest and we were swarmed pretty bad before we realized it. I got several stings. And that was the first time I had a serious allergic reaction. Anaphylaxis. I had to go to the hospital. From what I understand, it could’ve been a species related allergy. Maybe southern or eastern yellow jackets that I’m allergic to, and not all species. That would make more sense to me, because I don’t remember being stung by a ground nest specifically before that incident. But, either way, I’ve been very careful ever since that day. I have only been stung one time since then by a single yellow jacket that flew into my armpit while I was riding a bike. I had an allergic reaction but it was mild. Just a few hives, no big deal. But I still have to be very careful.
@HornetKingOfficial

I'm a nurse, and the term "allergy" is thrown around quite a bit relating to bee and wasp stings. It's more accurate to refer to it as a sensitivity. Some people are very sensitive to insect venom, and some people, like me, are not very sensitive, but at any point, I very well could establish a sensitivity to insect venom. But that doesn't make it an allergy, per se. It's splitting hairs and more of a semantics game within the medical community, but either way, your body overreacts to the presence of the venom, but everyone's body just reacts, to the presence of the venom. Peanuts, a lot of people have zero anaphylactic response when they eat them, some people can't even be in the same room with a peanut; that's an allergy.

@@DB-sd3cw I went to an allergy specialist when I was a kid and that’s what they told me. They said you can be allergic to one species and not another. But I suspect it may be different for everyone. You just have to be tested to find out.

What a large nest in such a confined space (for you to get to!) After watching some of your videos how wasps and hornets invade inside the home, I do my weekly walk around my house (usually when I’m mowing) to make sure I don’t see any activity and proactive to seal any area that they could enter. That would be a good video to make, look for areas wasps or hornets can enter and fix/seal. Great videos Bret, keep them coming!

I think your are referring to an epi pen. As soon as you feel like your breathing is affected or you feel swelling in your throat area.... You inject the epi pen into your thigh and then get your butt to the hospital. Or rather that's what I've been told to do. Thankfully, I have not had to use my epi pen. 🤞🤞🤞

Question I have always wanted to ask about ground nests. What happens when it rains? How do these nests survive when it rains allot? It seems like the holes would fill up with water (or at least partially). Love your videos!!
@HornetKingOfficial
@HornetKingOfficial Жыл бұрын
Think about how when it downpours and we get 2 inches of rain. Well wasp nest entrances are only about an inch in diameter, so the most that gets down the entrance is 2 inches of water, dispersed through the soil, and any that makes it down to the nest, runs along the floor of the tunnel and down into the cavity. The nests are suspended about an inch off the floor of the cavity, so no water would touch the nest. Even any water absorbed through the ground at the top of the nest, would be moisture, not flooding. Now, if the nest was started in a lowland, or a gully, and water storm runoff came through that area, yes, the nest would be flooded. But in my experiences, they don't make their colonies in too many low-lying areas.

I've got a dumb question that I'm almost 100% certain you've answered before.... how do you identify the males? Do they have a different pattern or is it something else? I always enjoy your content and knowledge, Cheers Mr King.
@HornetKingOfficial
@HornetKingOfficial Жыл бұрын
It's not a dumb question but I have answered it many times. Males have an extra abdominal segment, making their abdomen longer and more slender than females, and they also have an extra antenna segment on each of their antennae; they are jet black and hook to either side of their head, like ram horns. That's the best way for someone watching to identify them.

Would it help to have like... some sort of custom-made attachment for the vacuum hose to attach to, that when you attach it and slot the hive against it, it sucks out the larvae from their slots? I'm thinking of like, the functionality of a shower head - but in reverse; And the more larvae that gets sucked up, the stronger the --force-- suction emitted from the remaining holes that haven't sucked one up. I dunno... just a random thought.
