Here's an interesting bit of trivia - I had a friend whose family fled from Soviet-controlled East Berlin before the wall came down in 1989. He lived in Nevada for years as a private pilot (I think it was a charter/shipping service) and had an opportunity to meet Linda Harrison "Nova", the woman on horseback with Charleton Heston at the end of the first Planet of the Apes movie, and even had a date with her. He had a rough life after those years and passed away about 7 years ago from adult onset diabetes, but he used to always talk about meeting her, it was one of his most cherished memories. He remembered her being such a sweet and kind woman.

I’m a child of the 60s. My collection of toys was primarily various space models, probably first issue Lost in Space toys (a styrofoam Jupiter that was pretty cool), Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, GI Joe of course, Bat Man, Major Matt Mason galore, and lots of bubble gum cards. My family wasn’t well off so what I had got loads of play time so sadly nothing is left. I can say they were played with and quite enjoyed though. I would have loved anything from The Invaders. Loved that program. It would have been cool if there had been figures associated with The Night Stalker, but I probably wouldn’t have any as I started University in 76. Good times and hey, I got to stay up for the moon landing in 69 and saw Mercury through Apollo on TV so I suppose the real deal was cool. When I grew up I became the Production Director for Lucas publishing, producing magazines for the official fan club and the Star Wars conventions, call “Celebration”. My boss collected Star Wars props and anything Star Wars so was thrust into that world when I worked for Wizards of the Coast in the 90s. Probably the most amazing place I ever worked at. I wish I’d had Star Trek toys as a kid as hands down it was my first love.

Dan, you're one cool cat. Being a lifelong Planet of the Apes mega fan is actually how I first stumbled upon your channel. People forget that sci-fi action figures (Sorry, not dolls - because... Why call Kenner's 3 3/4 inch toys "action figures" when they only had 5 points of articulation, THE SAME AS BARBIE, but classic 8 inch Megos had 14 to 16 points of articulation?) and other assorted merchanding trends actually started with the Apes films. I'm currently reading The Making of Star Wars ("Episode IV"), and George Lucas actually owes a great deal to the Apes franchise, because 20th Century Fox was only interested in funding another big budget sci-fi flick because POTA had been such a huge cash cow for them. The "Go Ape!" craze had mostly subsided by 1975, so Alan Ladd Jr. was quite pleased to discover that the then fledgling filmmaker who'd only recently scored his very first huge hit with a surprisingly low budget film called American Graffiti, intended to do a sci-fi epic for his next project. Sure, Star Wars will always be its own unique phenomenon, of course, but over the years, I've come to realize just how many preexisting properties heavily influenced Lucas in the 70s. Everyone knows he was trying to reinvent Flash Gordon, but there are also clearly evident concepts taken directly from Star Trek (because Spock, on the bridge of the Enterprise, psychically felt the destruction of a Vulcan ship in an episode of the original series long before Ben Kenobi "felt a great disturbance in the Force. As if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced."), Dune, The Six Million Dollar Man, the Kung Fu TV series, and yes, even Planet of the Apes. I'm sure that's why Lucas first approached Mego to produce Star Wars figures before the film had even been released. He had seen the merchandising bonanza created by the Apes franchise, and he obviously intended to quite literally "ape" that particular pop culture phenomenon. As a result, to this very day, a lot of collectors would still love to see a line of 8 inch Star Wars figures done the way Mego would have made them if they hadn't stupidly turned Lucas down back in the 70s!

Joes, I collected the Super hero figures, the Aura Prehistoric Life Creatures, and MAD Magazine as my uncle was the editor at the time, (Al Feldstein).....there were other odds and ends things I collected I'm sure.....then I discovered books and well, the rest is history, but lately I have been trying to collect those things of my youth.....I did enjoy the collections and walk down childhood's memory lane.

I saw Star Wars day 1 second showing in 1977@ the Lowe’s Theater on 86’th street in Manhattan. They handed out buttons that had “May the Force be with You. “ to everyone. I still have the button and wore it to Empire and Return. I saw both the first day they were released. And I also wore it when I saw the prequels. I also have the movie program from Star Wars I bought that day. It’s not in very good condition because I kept flipping through it. I collect cheesy horror and scifi movies from the 50’s and 60’s and have at least a hundred.

It's too bad they didn't merchandise the bejeezus outta LOGAN'S RUN. One of my favorite movies, but aside from the MARVEL comics, the movie poster, and the soundtrack album, what was there? No action figures, no Mazecar toys, a whole lotta nuthin! My brother had an Ankh pendant made for me, which resembles the ones seen in the movie pretty well. I do know that there are Gun props made, even ones with working 'ammo' that makes the Flare effect, but whenever I saw them available in niche markets, they were rather spendy. A lost opportunity for MGM to cash in on LOGAN'S RUN fans, I must say.

One thing I always wish existed was a toy museum which featured all the toys from my childhood & then some. I'd especially would love an omni-mover-style darkride where you ride past dioramas of large scale animatronic replicas of the figures, vehicles & playsets. Playing in the background would be themes from Star Wars, GI Joe & Masters of the Universe, to name a few. You could have a diner where the walls would be decorated w/vintage lunchboxes & of course a toy store that would sell both modern & vintage toys. How cool would THAT be? ❤

Almost any "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" related items from books to bottle openers. The Masterpiece 31" Nautilus model is the piece that made me slow down on the collection, it seemed to satisfy something in me. The 1966 Batmobile is there, and the Hero vehicles/characters from the Irwin Allen shows, the Invaders ship. I'm tempted to make a Robot Chess set with all of the famous ones as the pieces, Robby and Maria as the King and Queen, B-9/Bishop, Gort/Knight, with a tall slender Spaceship as the Rook, and Huey/Dewey/Louie as the Pawns. Too much to list, and it's all a sore spot with my (owner) Wife. Good Show Dan. 👍👍⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐😎.

Dan, that was an awesome episode, geeking out about what you, and everyone who submitted photos, are so passionate about! I'm humbled you picked my photos in this segment. As a side story about my collection: i had a small die cast Millenium Falcon for years. Recently, i found out a childhood friend of mine passed away a while back. This was a girl who, back in '78, stopped by after my family moved into our home, with a Kenner Millenium Falcon, asking if I wanted to come out and play with her Star Wars figures. I found where she'd been laid to rest, stopped by, laid some flowers...and took my die cast Falcon and buried it next to her grave. Hopefully, wherever she is, she appreciated the gesture, leaving my Falcon for her play wherever she is, as she first did when she first met me 40+ years ago.

It was a little bit of everything but alot of playsets and action figures. Over the past 3 years I sold most of it off "for great profit." I did keep my Speeder Bike promotional toy produced by Huffy for Kenner from 1983 and all my MOC Star Wars action figures. Thanks for sharing your great collection, nothing like nerding out over vintage toys.... LOL

I still have my Remco robot, in the same color scheme as yours. Mine isn't exactly mint, the bubble is missing one of the tabs that held it in, both claws get broken at some point and were glued back on, the rubber on the steering wheel is long gone, and I don't think the motor works any more. As for the Moebius robot kit, I've wanted it, but the one thing that's stopped me from getting it, and this may sound silly, is that I know I wouldn't be able to built it with all the lights and sounds that I would want. I saw a video on here of someone who had built it into my dream model. Full, accurate lights, voice and sounds, remote control treads, motorized torso, animated brain, power pack activates and deactivate the robot, and the most mind-blowing feature: all the little chest buttons can be pressed to turn the lights in them on/off.

I have collections from many different favorite movies, but probably my most extensive collection is what I have from 2001: A Space Odyssey. The largest of these is my 5.5-ft long Discovery 1, which has it's own special shelf above our couch. I also have several different versions of the Moonbus, Pan Am Space Clipper, Aries 1-B, and the Space Pod, along with three 1/6th scale astronauts (red, yellow, and silver suits). In addition, I have many signed photos and posters from the movie, along with poster boards I've created for 2001 displays that I've done over the years, including when I worked with Kier Dullea and Gary LockwoodI have lots of models from Star Trek, and several scratch built models from Planet of the Apes, Dark Star, Fantastic Voyage, and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. My largest non sci-fi collection would be my X-15 rocket plane collection that goes along with my book on this subject. The largest piece in that collection is my 4-ft X-15 which used to hang in the offices at Edwards AFB during the time the X-15 was flying in the 1960s.

This was one of my favorite episodes you've done so far! Even though I've pretty much stopped adding to my collection because of my age (late 60's), reason being I don't want to make it any harder on my children after I pass to have to deal with all the stuff. I've collected various sci fi like Robby the Robot, B9 Robot, Star Trek, Dr. Who, and some 1/6 scale action figures. The one sore spot though is a 24" B9 Robot I got on ebay. After receiving it, I was horrified to see there wasn't a remote control for it. The person selling claimed he didn't know it came with one. Even though this thing has all sorts of things it's suppose to do and takes a pile of batteries in the main robot, it still won't operate without the remote! Sadly, I was never able to track one of these remotes down so it just sits there looking cool but never moving. With that said, I for one would like to see more of the collections type videos by you. Keep up the great work and never let go of that inner kid!

If you looked into the gap you could plainly see that the robot was made of old Japanese food cans. The labels (painted directly onto the can) was simply turned inside out and used...

Ahhhh! The POTA Treehouse is the centerpiece of my collection. Got an unopened one about 6 years ago and had a hard protective case custom made for it! You're the best Dan!

I grew up in Marin County. If you know you know I saw Star Wars when it first came out. as a kid after graduating culinary school in San Francisco I applied at Lucasfilm for a sous chef position in one of the buildings at the ranch. The original Yoda is there under glass where I interviewed in the foyer. There’s a private fire department at the ranch and a bad ass kitchen. George Lucas‘s old house was in San Anselmo where I grew up. so at local events, you would always see characters that he sent down for like the Christmas parade and the local firehouse pancake breakfast

This video has me seething with jealousy 😂. Growing up we had three boys stuffed into one room and we really didn't have the room to collect anything. My mother was notorious for throwing out toys she felt weren't being played with. 😢😂

Super awesome and amazing collection! Alot of your collection brings me back to what I also had or wanted. For me, I had so many collectibles. Most from the 70s-80s you franchises and a small but significant number from the Japan market. Oh, if only I had the foresight to know how collectible all the toys I had from the 80s would be and had kept them all. I would still be in nostalgia heaven.

Born in 1969 we had the best Christmas years as a kid growing up in Buffalo NY. Finding all of my old toys as an adult is something else. Having a replica of a phaser from TOS Star Trek I would have given up my left arm for back in the 70's! Thanks Dan for the great vids and memories!

This was the best episode, Dan! Thanks for sharing your stuff, and the stuff of others! I have some collectibles, but my two significant fan experiences both revolve around Star Wars. I've been to Skywalker Ranch twice and said hi to George Lucas even! Second, when I was 7 years old, my cousin interviewed David Prowse, and I got to ask him what it was like to be Darth Vader!

Wow! What an awesome trip down memory lane! Between my brother and I we owned nearly the entire Kenner vintage collection of Star Wars toys. But unfortunately, I sold mine off about six years ago to pay for repairs to our septic tank. I literally flushed my childhood down the toilet. “How sad is that?!”😢

Very cool collection of stuff! I didn't even know there was so much out there. Most of what I had a kid in the 70s and 80s is long gone. Since then I have collected a few things, mostly Star Trek movie posters which are rolled up in tubes, and someday they will be framed and on a wall whenever my wife and I have a house. These days I build models, most of them Star Trek. I built Star Trek models when in my teens but thanks to what I learned from the TrekWorks Channel hosted by the late Boyd Crompton, I can build them with much better quality. Other models are the Titanic and the Daytona Spyder form Miami Vice. When I finish some I'll send photos. Other than TV and movies, two walls of my home are covered with stuff my wife and I have bought at renaissance festivals.

No collection but I do have a great memory of a Dr. Who convention. Peter Davison was the star: my sister embarrassed the hell out of me by asking Peter tons of questions about David Prowse (his close friend) but asked NOTHING about Peter himself. 🤣

Mad props to you for all the stuff you saved from your youth! My first real collecting jag came thanks to Star Wars. I DID collect the original 12 action figures and then some. I wound up adding many of the 2nd series of original Star wars figures including Pilot Luke, Power Droid, R5-D4, and the 4 Cantina creatures. When ESB came out, I got Yoda (orange snake), the FX-7 medical droid (with all the arms), and IG-88 (because I liked the idea of a robot bounty hunter). Early on, I even went so far as to write to Kenner HQ in Ohio and ask for replacement weapons that my little brother kept losing. Eventually, they sent me a COMPLETE set of spare weapons including multiples. I also got the mail-order display stand for the original 12 figures. I also got my Boba Fett figure via the original main-in offer on the figure cardbacks. In fact, the Boba Fett was so new that the cardbacks had a sticker on the back covering over the original diagram of the backpack rocket-launching feature. UN-Fortunately, I wound up giving all this stuff to my little brother for some bizarre reason. Fortunately, he assures me that he has all his Star Wars toys safely packed away among his belongings in his house including all my old stuff. Over the past year I went about re-collecting all the figures I had and then some thanks to E-Bay and "I Had That" Collectibles in my hometown of Belleville, IL. I also no have the complete bounty hunter set from ESB. All figures have original weapons and capes including my original Leia. At one time between 1978 & 1981, I built many of the MPC plastic model kits (X-Wing, Vader's TIE, R2, 3PO, and the Millenium Falcon (the first time I ever experimented with weathering effects). As a 12-13 year old kid, I was fanatical for ANYTHING Star Wars, so I began to save anything I could find in magazines or newspapers such as articles, photos, and movie listing ads which were pretty sizeable back in the day. I still have all this stuff safely packed away including a nice, big 1977 "Happy Holidays" movie ad: filmartgallery.com/products/star-wars-5 Later in 1979-80 when Star Wars was re-re-released prior to the ESB premiere, I saved my ticket stubs from the couple times I went to see the film again. In 1978 for my 13th birthday, I got the Kenner "3-position Laser Rifle" aka, the Stormtrooper rifle. This unfortunately went into the big toy black hole of my teenage years. My brother still has his, though it is in heavily played-with condition (rode hard, put away wet). Several years ago, I found a great condition blaster rifle on E-bay complete with the 'D' ring on the butt. It was advertised as non-working, but by painstakingly winding some string around the inner rotating barrel piece, I was able to spin the barrel manually, thus un-freezing the electric motor, and now it works fine. To that, I added a beautiful metal DL-44 Han Solo blaster from Todd's Costumes: toddscostumes.com/props-and-accessories/star-wars-accessories/ I have many of the Topps trading cards including the entire first series as well as the stickers included. This collection also includes a couple cards where I tried to paint in blaster fire that was frustratingly missing. Fortunately, this was only 2 cards. I have several (most) of the Wonder Bread cards. I scrounged many of these from the lunch line at grade school, and also like you, I recon'd the loaves at the supermarket until I found one that I needed. I also have several of the stickers that came free in boxes of General Mills cereals. I still have all the items that came with my memberships to the Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back Fan Clubs (membership card, 8x10 photos, patches, stickers, T-shirt transfer, posters, book covers, pencil...). Unfortunately, I never kept my copies of the official "Bantha Tracks" newsletter. I still have my batch (not complete) of 10 or 12 "Star Wars Poster Monthly" magazines, my original 6 Marvel Star Wars comics, my original paperback novel (read and re-read dozens of times), Alan Dean Foster's "Splinter Of the Mind's Eye" bought in 1978, my 1978 Star Wars calendar, my original set of 4 Coca-Cola posters from Burger Chef, "The Star Wars Sketchbook" I got as a gift from my mother for graduation 8th Grade (Catholic school), the original soundtrack LP set I got for my 13th birthday, and my original "Story Of Star Wars" LP. Still have my Beta format copies of "Star Wars" and "Empire", as well as several different VHS Original Trilogy sets, the DVD set that came out just BEFORE the "Special Edition" releases, then said Special Edition releases themselves. I also have the prequel & sequel films on DVD, as well as the Genndy Tartakovsky animated "Clone Wars" series 1 & 2. I also add to this collection my eyes which were privileged to bear witness to the one and only airing of "The Star Wars Holiday Special" on November 17th, 1978. Being an adult with a job and disposable income, I have also acquired a Stat Trek collection I could only dream of as a kid. This includes many of the Diamond Select starship models, communicators, tricorders, phasers, and Klingon disruptors. I also have a beautiful Wand Company phaser replica. My wife scored me a large "Undiscovered Country" cardboard hanging Enterprise. I have a Micro Machines boxed set of classic Trek ships that come out in the 90s. I also have a replica Original series ship's intercom panel with a motion sensor that makes the classic Enterprise door "woosh" when crossing the beam. As far as older stuff, I have the original 12 books of novelizations of the original episodes by James Blish, and am only two volumes shy of completing the Star Trek Fotonovel set. My other collecting binge came in the form of Doctor Who sonic screwdrivers of which I have about 7 or 8 (thanks to the now defunct ThinkGeek web store).

Dan, I’m the same age as you & did the exact same thing you did with the loaves of wonder bread-carefully trying to look through the package to make sure I wasn’t getting a double. These cards were the first thing that I could remember getting that was Star Wars related. I would even volunteer to go grocery shopping 😑 with my Mom, just so I could check the wonder bread. 🤣
