This is VERY specific in PA. Pennsylvania State Police have been known to issue warnings and even citations to fire companies for anything other than a red, white, or amber light on a fire truck. Even so far as to go after places for using the red/white/blue or red/white/green combos in roto-rays and even some particularly asinine troopers claiming multi-colored tank gauge lights on a pump panel or cab were a violation of the law. The only way a fire department vehicle can have red and blues is for the company to have sworn in fire police, if not you can be arrested for impersonating a police officer. Basically red is fire, red AND blue is police. All blue is only for POV's and is a courtesy light only, they have zero force of law and garner you no special privileges.

Still not sure why this isn't just a police vehicle, it's staffed by police, has limited police powers and controls traffic like police yet it's fire? Why not just a police marked vehicle?
@iamReddington

Keyword is limited police powers. Fire police are essentially half firefighter half cop. Traffic control is a HUGE part of most scenes. Don't have correct traffic control and first responder's lives could be at risk.

@@iamReddington still a task which can be done by either police or fire department alone, doesn't really need a thing in between with both worlds combined I guess ... @@iamReddington here firefighters in each state have the law to stop traffic, and in at least one state they're also allowed to direct traffic; And it that specific state the FD runs extra blocker units to manage the traffic, they place cones, they have message boards, arrow boards, stop signals etc. And well yes actually it IS a task of the police. On urban and rural roads done primarily by the plain normal PD stations, on the highway primarily done by the highway patrol; That's what they have their cones, message boards, signal discs etc for We don't have sth similar like Fire Police at all, there's simply no need for it; Not even on highways without any speed limits, it's all done by plain normal fire department and plain normal police department, no mix of both

For all the questions about fire police, there are only a small number of states in the Union that actually have fire police. It is not just a bunch of old guys as some commenters have suggested, in fact most modern standards preclude anyone not in good physical condition from being able to do the job. In my region we have many officers as young as 18. While the vehicle in this video is very well done and maybe toward the upper end of the spectrum, squads and traffic units properly outfitted to do the job in accordance with the MUTCD, Will typically cost a minimum of $100,000. Like any other public safety job it takes equipment and professionals to do the job well and do it right especially in dealing with high speed freeways, large area shut downs and evacuations. For more information you can look on Wikipedia or search Pennsylvania special Fire Police and read about the specific designation we have in our state. In our County we have a fire police task force (consisting of strike teams of five squads or traffic units like this video per strike team) to respond for large incidents or incident involving durations of several hours or longer. When a large freeway is shut down and rerouted through business districts, you can have as many as a dozen and a half or two dozen firepolice officers on a single call. Hopefully that explains a little more how it works, at least in Pennsylvania. And yes many fire police officers are also firefighters (dual role) and just volunteer where needed most.
@mikel9567
@mikel9567 4 ай бұрын
I'm a Traffic Control Supervisor as well as an EMT. To properly equip a vehicle to MUTCD standards isn't going to cost $100,000. The majority of the cost in this truck in the video is in the reader board which can cost $20,000. You can spend as much or as little as you want but you don't need $100,000 - unless you want a rig like this. I suggest you read part 6 of the MUTCD to educate yourself on what is actually required. Also, per the MUTCD, an 'emergency' is different than routine traffic control for construction. While every department should strive to do it like the MUTCD outlines, the reality is on an incident you don't need to follow the same rules as a road crew doing maintenance work.

Honestly this is the dumbest thing I’ve seen, 150k on a truck for traffic cones and directional equipment? I know why we have fire police, it’s for 80 year old volunteers to feel like they still help, but it’s stupid make the police do there job and control traffic.

He also forgot to mention the part where there is only one road of any significance in Bloomsburg (US 11) and this routinely is the first thing to respond for everything from medical assists to structure fires. But look at all the fancy gold leaf!! Oh yeah and the state police have told them they cant use those like $2k a piece speed bumps which they are so proud of on any state roadways (seriously they called every news agency that would listen when they bought them). Terrible waste of money to carry around some cones, flashlights, and vests. That traffic board is useless too since most of the people who drive in PA cant read anyway.

Nice rig and concept. I don't know any towns in my state though that have an extra $150,000 to spend on a vehicle to haul traffic cones around in. We tend to call these vehicles police cars. If an incident is so large or extended then the local or state highway dept. will bring in barricades and what not.

In Virginia and with a Volunteer Fire Department, I don't understand the Fire Police unit. Are the Law Enforcement assigned to that station? All of our Law Enforcement is provided by the county or state. Traffic control at MVA's is done by our Firefighters or if needed VDOT. We do have Fire Marshals in the county Public Safety Department or VSP (Virginia State Police.) If you could maybe do a more detailed visit with one the Fire Police units explaining what and who they are, that would great. I enjoy all of your videos and hard work. Thanks and be safe.
