I hope you weighed it and did a full charge/discharge cycle to test capacity and Wh/kg.

Energy density includes volume which as you say is bigger too.
@AustinCooper907 жыл бұрын
Henrik Segercrantz I caught that too. He probably meant to only say “Energy” and added the word “density” by mistake

The jelly roll isn't just longer. It is also wider.
@dogphlap67497 жыл бұрын
+chubstheclown Exactly, my maths says 33% longer and 8% wider so around 40% more capacity than an 18650 and that assumes the chemistry is no better in that regard. Of course the cell takes up more room so Tesla won't be able to put as many 2170 cells in the same size battery pack. I guess overall the new cell format must be a worthwhile improvement or they would have just stuck with the 18650s.
@Phoenixklinge6 жыл бұрын
less cells -> less manufacturing -> cheaper packs
@tarstarkusz6 жыл бұрын
Which means this is not 30% more energy dense than the 18650. The energy density is more or less the same. It is dictated by the chemistry and not the physical shape. It may be cheaper to do it this way, but it has nothing to do with energy density.
@Phoenixklinge6 жыл бұрын
tarstarkusz density of the pack might change with formfactor though
@tarstarkusz6 жыл бұрын
No, it does not change the energy density. You might end up with lighter cells, but that is from the metal of the can it sits in and has nothing to do with energy density. Energy density is watts per kilogram of the electrolyte material.

Interesting dissection, but we're really all dying to know: - Mass - Current vs Voltage discharge curves - Mass-specific energy density - Volume-specific energy density Please comment if you have this information. Thanks

1. the holes for gassing: water vapor is detrimental to the electrolyte and cell lifespan, how can it have vent holes? 2. secondly what is weght of case to weight of jelly role?

Daniel Lewin, I think there is a real that ruptures, then the gases escape from the three half mm holes.
@MikeTrieu5 жыл бұрын
Given a small enough pore size, water vapor cannot permeate a membrane (at standard ATP). Dunno if that's 0.5mm, but that's the working theory.

The Powerwalls and Powerpacks are also built at the Gigafactory, and they are known to also use Samsung cells of this format type. How do you know this is from the Model 3 line and not a Samsung cell from the storage products?

Great job. I don’t have access to these batteries, but I would love to get detailed info. Any chance of doing a video where you weigh the empty cylinder as well the the stuff inside? Could you, also, provide the internal volume of the cylinder? Precision and accuracy would be greatly appreciated.

so the energy per volumen and weight is...? Why Tesla dont make cubic baterry than cilinder? He dont lose energy from the corner when he packing it? If he make cubic batterry can fit better when put in the large case. He make cilinder because heat dissipation?(corner missing = more airfllow or liquid flow)
@Cloxxki6 жыл бұрын
It's all a balancing act of effects I suppose. Round is more efficient in use /kWh of the most dense material needed, the can. How you're going to cool them and how much colling they'll need based on usage, chemistry, etc.

This isn’t a model 3 cell, look at the tear down of the battery pack and the positive terminal is very different... probably not a Tesla battery at all

the cid fuse in the lid should also be shown, small holes are not for gas release only to pop the cid fuse , please search '18650 cid' in youtube then update the wrong info in video, i only just discover about cid fuse. if cid fuse pops that cell is out of action, may play a large role in loss of capacity in a pack. how to tell in tesla pack if cid fuse has popped?
