We refer kwailo as white foreigners here in Malaysia 😅 nothing derogatory just a term referring to white people. In Malay we call them Mat Salleh

As a white foreigner living in China, it’s very informative and interesting to hear the perspective of black foreigners living in China. Good job, Aiden

As a transgender cornealous South African, I can say China has been the most open minded and respectful place I’ve been. I look forward to more visits with the likes of my friend George.

I am an ABC canto and my parents always use the word 鬼佬 but never meant it in a derogatory or perjorative way. Is this word comsidered offensive and racist in China now? Thanks

the literal translation is a derogatory meaning..the ghost guy..

I'm Chinese but I agree with you, I never heard the word is considered derogatory. We always call foreigner that. Don't know why Aiden say it's racist.
@tempestmars1233 ай бұрын
as a native Chinese, I would say yes, 鬼佬 is derogatory per se, even though many people are desensitised with the term like your parents.

香港也是用鬼佬形容外国人,其实由来是因为外表不一样,第一次接触外国人以为见鬼😂
@aiden_qiuu3 ай бұрын
Honestly, directly translated in English. I think it’s kind of racist and it’s like unfriendly tone, but like since we are native to the language, I think we kind of just get used to it and also nowadays the term is referring the same meaning as the past.

I don't know if I would consider that girl a foreigner in China, since she was born there. It's really confusing to say the least. I'm sure there are some racism in China against black people, but the US is still one of the worst in the world. China did not have black people in their history, so they did not have the same history as America did. What that man said about the older generation being more racist, that's true. The older generation grew up in a much different China. The new generation of Chinese people are growing up in a more richer more civilized China.

本来一直以为中国不存在种族歧视, 但看完视频后才知道还是存在这种情况, 特别是"猴子"之类的, Shame on them! 很感谢这些黑人朋友在中国经历这些之后依然觉得中国是一个很好的地方.

to me, gui lo is not a racist term, it is just a word that cantonese people how to describe foreigner in a slang term. I can see you got stuck on how to explain the word in a better way which is fine but please don't tell foreigner that is a racist term and create more misunderstanding between Chinese and foreigners

The young Hong Kong'er burned up their city for the British. I holp they don't try to do that in the mainland
@downtomars62683 ай бұрын
Today "gwei lo" which originated in colonial Hong Kong simply refers to white people, not a specific racist term, where the reference is used positively, neutrally, or negatively. As far as I know, most of China do not use it, just certain southern parts like Hong Kong.
