There's this awkward 'middle class' of KZbinrs who have 200,000-600,000 subscribers who are making about the average income. It's a strange disconnect seeing people with enough followers to fill 10 stadiums who make the same as a teacher.

Ten Minute History but you have to consider, that you dont have to study something difficult to become successful on youtube. People bust their ass off for years in university learning shit like mechanical engineering only to get a job that pays less than a stupid kid on youtube earns, just for releasing shitty content. If anything, youtube should pay even worse. I am subscribed to many youtubers, but that doesnt mean i would go to a stadium and pay for a seat for every single one of them.

The KZbin middle class is rough if you’re using the traditional KZbin business model of relying on Adsense and one off brand deals. However there are channels under 100k doing over $100k a year by doing different business models and diversifying... If you’re an entertainer rather than say a fitness or DIY channel it’s going to be harder to make money and diversify unless you prioritize large brand deals and merchandise...
@LetsBuildThatApp6 жыл бұрын
Having done KZbin for 2.5 years and crossed the 100K mark, I can tell you that its been a lot of fun, stress, anxiety, work, and discovery. Compared to my old 9-5 job as a Senior Software Engineer, I think being a content creator is without a doubt more enjoyable. Not only do I get to create whatever I want, I also do not have to endure the painful monotony of meetings and useless feature development. That being said, my niche in programming has helped me out a lot. Being the only person delivering my style of content has helped separate myself from the more established channels on KZbin. One word of advice I have for people looking into KZbin is to ask themselves: Would you do KZbin for 3 years if it didn't pay any money at all. A lot of the time spent in churning out content goes unseen and remains unseen even after success.

I've been making KZbin videos for over two years, and as of now, I only have 146 subscribers. That's fine by me though, because it's not about the money or fame. To me, it's about having an outlet that makes me happy. I look at KZbin in the same way that most musicians look at music. It's a form of creative expression. I want to make movies, and it would be amazing if I could gain a career out of doing that, but if that never happens, I will always feel pride in knowing that I have the tools to make my own movies, that my friends can enjoy and I can look back on and be proud of :)

But I feel like a lot of KZbinrs that I follow have come from hardship, and still struggle with it all. But I’m just glad you’re here. I’m glad you’re doing this. I get the fact that money cant buy happiness and that people who have problems that money might not help. But being on the poorer side of the economy myself I can definitely say that money may not make you completely happy but it can definitely help. Having financial security and knowing that you have money in case something happens can make you relax alot more then not having it. People with money do not understand what it is like to be in constant stress about stuff like, what happens if I get hurt and I cant work, or I get sick, or what happens if I get laid off? For people who are in the lower class and are on the poorer side have to worry about this every day and have sleepless nights stressing about is this bill gonna be paid on time, am I gonna have enough money to split between rent and gas for my car. Money may not be able to buy full happiness in someone's life but it can definitely help in guiding them to happiness.

Hey Boogie, I've been doing KZbin fulltime for just over 6 years now and everything you said is so true. I've had months where I've made more money than I knew what to do with and I've had plenty of months where I didn't know if I was going to pay my rent. Thankfully I'm still here and I wanted to mention that "money management" is key to youtube. It's like being a realtor. You're not going to sell a house every month, so you save money on good months to be ready for bad months. I've been through all the ups and downs of youtube both mentally and otherwise. It's a hell of a roller coaster mentally(why don't they like me now? they loved me before...etc etc). Adding twitch to youtube 5 years ago helped with the money stress but at the end of the day you still depend on the kindness of others and/or how "relevant" you are. Even doing this fulltime for years I'm still not stable financially, it makes me questions if this is even worth it anymore, yet here I am. lol.

Most people who are now trying go become successful KZbinrs have not accounted for Timing and Talent... that is where “luck” plays some role in success. The other thing is very few aspiring KZbinrs are bringing something new to the table... Peter McKinnon and Doctor Mike are not 20 year old meme lords... but grew to be successful in a short period of time, even without catering to the average KZbin Audience. Sailor J, got to 200k subs without great production or focusing on a niche purely on personality. They were successful because of their talent and the fact that at the time nobody was delivering what they could deliver... The mental health message you brought up is legit. KZbin for me has been therapeutic on many levels and made me money vs spending it on a shrink... That experience is super rare though. It was the fact it gave me more confidence in presenting my thoughts creatively and sharing my ideas in a direct way. What also never gets said is that most larger creators did KZbin as a hobby for no money for 4-6 years on average...

People who say money doesn't matter have more money than they could need so they no longer understand the struggles of not having any money. And no, I'm not talking about "I Don't have enough money to pay for a new graphics card, or a new house I wanted or a car" I'm talking about having enough money to simply survive or keep your family alive. A lot of people suffer because they just simply don't make enough money to keep themselves or their families fed. And that is what leads them to depression, So if that kind of person got their hands on money they'd probably be fine with life.

People assume doing what you love in life for a living would be a dream, but for me it was not. I love to build, fix and ride motorcycles, but then I started doing it for money and all of a sudden it became stressful. So I stopped because I don't want to take the soul out of my favorite thing for money. I just do it for myself now and work as a landscaper in which I am happier and get to do what I love without the stress.

Do it for the love of it bud, life is not about money, although it does help to have it.. You never know, if you post your sketches online, one day you may be recognized by someone who would be willing to do a deal with you in which all you do is create and they take care of the business aspects of it, you probably wont get the full financial gain as if you were to do it independently, but who cares you would be able to do what you love and reach more people with it.

As an entertainment professional, I can say that ALL of this is true for us too. Whether you're A list of D list, there is anxiety and accepting and coping with that is all part of it. No matter how successful you are, you have problems, and it takes a mature individual to resolve and cope with them, whatever they are. A highly successful individual once told me "We're just ordinary people, who do extraordinary things." ANYONE can do extraordinary things. That is human drive.

I actually started being a KZbinr when I was looking to fix the hood latch to my Ford Ranger which broke on the way to work one day (music teacher here). Seeing that I saw some other viewers could not totally follow most of the highly technical language of the DIY videos I researched, I used my teaching skills and made a video for everyone just to be able to have a clear video on how to fix it. I continued doing this with other DIY projects and eventually reviewing products and I feel lucky to say it has created some side income for my family and allowed me to review products that I never thought I would be able to review. My five year old son now does videos with me and it is a great thing to do as we review products together that we use and just started vlogging adventures together. If you do something you're interested in, it makes all the difference. I will have to say though that the original monetization rules with no limitations on subscribers and minutes viewed made me very motivated in the beginning of my video making as I saw my AdSense revenue begin to slowly climb over the years.

My family use to be well off, and I overall loved it, we had no worry's of getting by. Now I need to sometimes attend foodbanks and hope the bills will get paid. I love also making videos for youtube, and at first I did think of just the money.. always thinking if these guys can do , why cant I. Now I make videos to help people with Info they are seeking .. and that feels good to me :) But I am so happy Boogie finally said which most you-tubers wont say is the LUCK.. tons tons of luck, ohh and timing. 7 years ago there was not as many channels so it was easier to get noticed. Now if you come up with a channel topic, its been done a million times.What really gets me is how someone like Boogie that gets tons of views , is nothing fancy.. no music tracks, no cinematic editing, no opening or closing editing.. just plain out webcam and his face covering the topics he covers. and people love it!! I am one of them, in that case it is a knack he developed, he is not afraid to open up to us were most channels tend to hide being a fancy game or eye candy etc. Thanks as always Boogie and keep it rockin.

Not going to lie, it sounds like his video is about how successful people get a lot of money but it doesn't equal to being happy. While you won't be always happy, a single small bump isn't going to send you out of control. The big point he miss is for many, money allows people to find what makes them happy. At worst, it's a layer of security. I've personally been on both ends. A few years back I was so poor I couldn't even afford to get tea at Mc Donald, and I learned that when I was trying to buy something to drink. I'm still at the point where a single small bump can dramatically wreck me. I'm absolutely tired of it, but I can tell you I'm happier now than when I was literally making $8 a week or working for food. While I'm not nor ever have been in debt nor ever taken out a loan, if I get an F or D in a single class. If I get hurt, majorly sick, or whatever. I'm done I'm absolutely tired of feeling like I'm on pins and needles. I'm tired of thinking about buying a tank of pure nitrogen gas with a mask to kill myself. I'm tired of having to be lonely for the trade off for a POSSIBLE better and stable future. I'm tired wanting basic items like food and having to question money. I'm tired of having to find ways for things I want having to pay for itself. I'm tried of having to try to find the next way to make a few dollars. I'm tired of always hunting for a stable job that will pay a normal amount and be around longer than 6 months to a year. I'm sure plenty of others can agree to most of what I said above. Yes while money might not be the shot of dopamine to your brain every second. Even now with the bit more I'm getting now between everything. I'm a lot happier than I was when the best I could do was $8 a week and working for food. At least now when I see a game I want, for the most part I can get it. At least now I actually invest money without it being in the singles or tens of dollars. (Even with that being said, at this time I would still tell myself if I was a kid to just end it. I'm 30 and again I'm still on pins and needles even after all this time. Even after having 3 degrees and working on another. Even after all the stuff I dealt with, I virtually am not even sure if I will find a good stable job, get in a good relationship, and get to a point where I don't have to be worried about the fundamentals.) BTW, when I said invest we aren't talking about a major amount. The good news is if I ever make it, then I have the knowledge to how to properly invest money. But in the market you only get a given %, and mine is about 10% yearly. Keep in mind 10% of 100 is $10. I'm investing because at least I have some safety net at worst. At worst if I'm on the verge of taking my own life because I'm that miserable I can try to find a game like Skyrim to escape in and I don't have to worry about the cost (giving this doesn't happen often).

Craig Bennett II If you are thinking that much about suicide I'd recommend going to your doctor and asking to be put on anti-depressants. They are not a cure but they have helped me get through some dark patches. It can be really hard when you don't seem to be getting anywhere (and don't even know where you're trying to get to) but what is more likely: reality has ceased to function and nothing you do matters, or you just haven't figured out your life yet. You've got three degrees, man, that's impressive, and working on your forth? Being a student is a valid, respectable identity so make the most of it. Apply for summer internships related to your degree, there must be some kind of programme at your university. That will get your name floating around with the right people and bring you some opportunities in the future. Go the extra mile, not everyone appreciates it but there are others who spend their time looking out for someone like that. Also, pay attention to yourself. Don't burn yourself out. Get your everyday tasks under control and build a proper routine. If you have a bad day don't waste time beating yourself up, don't even think about it, just pick up the pieces as best you can and keep moving forward; it beats lying around feeling sorry for yourself, getting nothing done and then feeling even worse. (The anti-depressants will at least give you the energy to keep on top of that.) You are clearly academically capable so the most important thing is to keep your health in check. 30 is still young but it is time you really pushed yourself to figure out where it is you want to be and strive for it, even if you can only figure part of the picture out, go for it. Things will start to fall into place, and hopefully you wont be feeling this way when you're 40. Good luck.

[sic] thanks for the advice, but it's a bit complicated than just taken a pill. As far as my thoughts on suicide, I've been thinking about it even when I was in middle school. I've attempted it a few times, and something went wrong each time. I tried getting a gas can to blow up next to my head, but the fire kept burning at the opening of the can but nothing happen. I tried boat flares that turned out to be bad, poison, and so on. This was all between middle school and HS. After I got in college I tried a few other things, but I kinda gave up mid way during my first degree. I've been only thinking of using something like Inert asphyxiant gasses is because things haven't gotten better. And at least with that method there would be 0 pain involved, and it would be kinda quick. Anyways, I'm pretty close to getting done with my last degree and hopefully by then I will be able to start on a stable life. I hope by mid of next year at least with a career, I can have something stable. So at least for the next year or so I won't be doing that. Anyways, talking about the problem or talking pills doesn't help. I gave the condition a name. I call it situation depression because the problem is with the situation I'm in. The only real fix is fixing the situation. And talking about my feelings or taking pills isn't going to magically bring money in or whatever. That's an escape, and I can do that a bit cheaper with playing games. As far as jobs. Getting my name out there isn't the problem. If you check out some of my older videos I get into a bit of what I'm into. I even had cnn, IBM, and others ask me for an interview. The problem with that is many of the jobs were only 6 months to a year and half long. Many of them required a stupid amount of travel. And all of them require me to move. Like the cnn one wanted me to move 2 states away and only work there for 6 months. So after the 6 months I would be screwed. IBM wanted me to travel 90% of the time, and that job only stay around for a little over a year. I know what I want, and it's to have a family and to provide them with a good stable life. Those jobs wouldn't allow it. Like I can go on and on about my situation and what happened in the past. But at the end of the day my problem is purely getting from the situation I'm in to a good one. Even after all the time, effort, and so on. I have doubts it will work. The point of me making the first post is to point out how what was said in the video flawed. Again, thanks for trying to help

Man u have 3 degrees and a 4th on the way if you haven't found a stable job by now u never will .
@TheAIKnowledgeHub6 жыл бұрын
My first degree is in aerospace. Long story short, NASA at KSC had a deal with the college where they would train us to work out there as part of the degree. Like when I took a class on NDT, I had to go on site to learn how to test items and how to test something with using methods that didn't break the item. My last year of that, Obama killed the man space flight and that killed all of our spots out there. The following degrees are in networks and general tech. I got them because it was cheaper to do that than straight into the one I'm in now which gets into a PM level in industrial technology. I figure if I don't get a good job within x amount of time after I get done. I'm just going to go into the military (Air Force). If that doesn't work, then I'm out of options when it comes to having a stable life. At that point I might as well plan on moving all around the world, and never being in an area long enough to know it.

Hi Boogie. Just wanted to say a lot of this resonated so hard with me. I am by no way near your level. I've recently hit 2000 twitch followers and average a little over 20 viewers and here's my story. The constant worry of people hanging around, the not knowing what game to play next and running out of content, the travelling to events and having to socialise, responding to messages, running a discord server... it makes me suffer... I lose sleep, I fret and worry and sonetimes I wish I'd never have started. The I could focus on me, my IRL, my dog, my family, and not have to dedicate hours every single day to growing the community and bettering myself. It's stressful and a lot harder work than people realise when you truly want to try and make it big. Thank you Boogie, for saying what I've been feeling

As an aspiring KZbinr, thank you for this video. Edit: Money is not my biggest motivation. Yes I would love to be able to work for myself and not have to worry about saving every penny I have to eventualy have enough for a deposit on a house. That being said my main motivation is simply my love of video games and wanting to build a community I can talk with about the video games we all like! I love having a creative outlet that allows me to create videos that im proud of and make me feel like im being productive and adding value to the planet. I'm a massive introvert and have serious self-esteem issues now and always have so maybe becoming a full-time KZbinr was meant for me. Im willing to put in the work, its always been my dream and I am determined to make it happen.

I was introverted as a kid. I didn't talk to anyone, I was extremely shy. I didn't like that. I know I am not like that. In truth I know I have all the capabilities to be there in the spotlight. I love that feeling of the lights and the camera and it just feels right. So, I started to improve myself. I'm always scared but I'll be the one to take initiative and start a conversation. I realised that courage is not something you just have, you build it as you go through life or you don't. I'm not brave, I'm just focused on being better than yesterday. Nobody will fix my mental issues for me. This is something I learned from watching you boogie and many other KZbin creators. That's my message. I learned from so much pain and so much anxiety and depression and from all the videos I watched that you can build your stage and your set and start doing what you love, even if you don't become the next star. You just think you don't, but you do. Thank you boogie for years of videos that have inspired me and given me the feeling that I was worth something. You probably won't read this comment since there are so many and I don't expect you to. BUT we'll meet someday, because I really want to shake your hand and thank you in person for making me fight my own shit, break myself and build myself.

This video feels refreshing, thanks dude! Imo, making a KZbin channel is worth it. I started making videos having absolutely no clue about neither filming nor editing (I'm still improvising tbh) and the coolest thing about it is finding your own little community, learning some editing tricks, watching yourself improve.. I think it's a really fun thing to do, even if just as a hobby.

I don't want to be a rich KZbinr. I just want to have enough to live on my own, and to get out of this shithole town that I live in. Also, I've tried working a "real job" in my area, and it was a living nightmare. It was immensely unprofitable, and I was treated like I was lower than shit.

I understand and agree with alot of points in the video. However it was almost entirely negative. I'm just saying if It was that bad, you wouldn't still be doing it. That goes for all these people you talk to. If the money, enjoyment, and just everything about it was that bad people would stop or quit. Just like with any job. If something isn't good or making me miserable I stop doing it. It can't be too bad considering how many KZbinrs there are making content as their main job. Sure you might deal with all the same problems everyone else has. Why would KZbin make that any different? It doesn't and that sucks. But you get to stay at home almost everyday if you choose, make money from your home doing stuff you enjoy. Someone else may feel and be the exact same as you but they can't do that. They have to go to a job that makes them even more nervous, drained, lots of physical work, more dealing with people, traffic, on and on that probably makes less money. If it doesn't make less money the expense of travel everyday, eating out everyday does. They also aren't siting at home getting to play games and talk about games and stuff they enjoy for income. So yea alot of stuff might be the same, but alot of stuff is also way fucking better and Its not that bad or people would stop. I think there needs be more positivity here.

Thanks for the info boogie, its nice to hear a youtuber speak honestly about this stuff. My boyfriend has been trying to do well on youtube and twitch for a long time, and does well for a while, but long periods of depression keep him from being consistent so people lose interest. I try to save up and buy him a piece of nice equipment each year for our anniversary or his birthday, hoping it might make him feel more confident and keep going, but its always great for a few weeks, and then halts. He's wanted so badly to be a gaming channel since the beginning of youtube, and I'd give my right arm for him to achieve his dreams. I hope one day we can afford to get him some medicine or therapy so he can.

I want to succeed at KZbin because I want to be able create a platform for my art and others. And wholeheartedly agree about the success, fame and money not being able to solve all of your problems because they're for the most part external things.

Another thing that people need to expect is the burnout that comes. I have hit that point multiple times & the more videos you make the more that is expected. Then there's the critics who will attack you no matter what you do. Let's not forget those who forget that you have a life outside of youtube. It's important to remember that in most cases it's only 1 person making all the content that you love & it's not always easy. I've attained over 37,000 subscribers witch is peanuts compared to boogie, but there are times where I feel overwhelmed. I know that everyone wants new videos but sometimes I just can't juggle between youtube & life. That is really the only complaints I have but i know that it comes with the territory. Thanks for the video Boogie. Really puts things into perspective.

You said that just because they make a ton of money that it doesn’t mean you’re keeping it. Well, you’re still making it and investing it. I don’t make that much working in the criminal justice field, but I part of it for schooling (for criminal justice) and working out and that’s my investments.

This is an excellent video. I'm new to KZbin, but what's interesting is that while I make content, it does come on the back of coming from a dark place. Ironically, creating KZbin content for me has acted almost as a form of therapy, as it's allowing me to not only open my mind to a new experience, it helps me stay focused on positivity in my life given the subject of my content. Money in the future might be nice, but the passion and joy I have now is more valuable than any money could be.

Thats what we really need to hear. Too many channels only cover meme's and materialistic things. Here's a meme for humanity. "Wakes up 6am - works to 6pm, 6 days a week. their kids go to school and have no time to see their parents" . "Adults think they monkeys on a spinning ball in outter space; but laugh and tell kids Santa Clause is not real."

I totally agree. There is a tremendous amount of hard work that you have to pour into KZbin. My channel has sub 5k subscribers and it is based around my profession and passion of programming. Publishing 2 videos a week has been both exciting and stressful but I'm addicted to teaching, sharing and improving. I have a full time programming job outside of KZbin so I am often up hours before work creating new video tutorials. I have no idea what defines a small, medium or large KZbin channel but the work that goes in is huge regardless of size.

It’s interesting to think about what you said. Your “what if people stop watching tomorrow” is the same as my “what if my factory closes down tomorrow”. Or they at least share similarities. I’ve never thought about it like that. About the money: you’re absolutely right. It would certainly ease the stress of bills among other things. But if you’re depressed before the money, chances are you will be after you get money. No matter how many happy faces you put on.
