Rob, I feel your pain mate. I've never done it in such an expensive car but have twice in my almost 20 years of teaching drifting had that moment where you miss judge the steering lock of a car you're not used to and all of the sudden the car takes over and you are instantly going backwards, looking out the back window, hand on the back of the passenger seat like you are about to do a pro reversing move, all the while apologizing to the passenger/owner of the car and promising them you are going to fix their car way before you even come to stop completely unscathed. I have taught a few dozen people how drift their vehicles using my local tracks, industrial areas and back roads. That 1 or 2 times you get it wrong in other people's cars (or a new purchase for yourself) seems to be what people are judged on even though they did no damage and haven't done in the last 20+years of doing it. It doesn't matter what other people say about it, you didn't die, you didn't total it, it's all good.

How much you can see his emotion when he describes the top speed, and hitting those top speeds, that is what driving is about sometimes. It's not a thing that is easily describable. Funny that’s exactly how I felt when I spun my crown Victoria, I’ve been driving civics and accords all my life and knew fwd was a whole different ball park from rwd... so I get the vic... and after about 6 days of ownership my neighbor (also a car enthusiast) wanted a ride in it... so it’s me him and his girlfriend driving this tank with a couple mods in the rain... we get around the corner and the rear end just kicccckkkkks out. Mind you were only doing 15-20mph. I tried to correct it ended up over correcting and spun it 180 onto a curb... broke the axle cracked the rim... I didn’t care about the car because it could be fixed... I was just so embarrassed and apologetic toward my neighbor and his girlfriend for spinning it with them in the car... even when I see them today I still feel bad for it...

I remember being told by a police advanced instructor telling me about the problems most drivers have with any kind of spin -which is, even though most of us know and understand about countersteering and turning INTO the slide, the SINGLE MOST common mistake people make as the sliding wheels begin to regain traction and grip, that THEN is the time when you should IMMEDIATELY unwind your opposite lock and countersteering! If you don't do this VERY rapidly, the car will instantly throw you into a spin the OPPOSITE way - the pendulum effect. He finished by saying this is what happens in 70-90% of accidents involving spins that he's called to!!
