For more information on this topic, I have written a “field manual” called Engine Performance Diagnostics which is available at www.scannerdanner.com as an eBook or paper book.
Want even more diagnostic training? Whether you are a DIY trying to fix your own car, someone looking to become an auto technician, or a current auto technician that wants to get more into diagnostics, subscribe to ScannerDanner Premium www.scannerdanner.com/join-sc... There is a 14 day free trial.
On ScannerDanner Premium I will bring you right into my classroom at Rosedale Technical College. You will find page for page lectures taken right from my book as well as exclusive classroom type case studies. What is so special about these classroom case studies? I pull live problem vehicles directly into my classroom and we troubleshoot them in real time, using and applying the theory and testing procedures we learn during the classroom lectures. There is no better on-line training of how to troubleshoot automotive electrical and electronics systems anywhere!

Great information, as always. Been a long time viewer, and have benefited greatly from the knowledge. Everyday on my way to work I would listen to a video in the background. It's amazing, the amount of parts changers out there! Can be frustrating, depending on where you're working as a technician when dealing with parts changers. Anyways, just wanted to thank you for all the great content, and let you know that out here in Northern California your teachings are just as appreciated as everywhere else! If I were in the Pittsburgh area I'm sure i would've gone to Rosedale Tech. But I need to give a shout-out for my technical college, Butte College Automotive in Chico CA. Great school as well! Razor sharp instructors, beautiful facility, reminds me of Rosedale (whenever you show pictures of the classroom or shop). Thanks again! I look forward to every new video release!

Your premium channel has helped me a lot. It's very well organized and easy to follow along. I keep notes when I leave for a while so I can remember where I left off. I don't comment as much as I use to but be assured I'm still learning.

This is major step up it will be awesome with a major guest in Brandon. I would make the trip over the Atlantic for it but have kalready booked in May for my annual Italian trip. For those who don't have premium it is really detailed and well structured and takes you on a journey from the most basic circuits through to how to figure out complex systems you have never seen before.

This video would've been handy for me about 3 years ago. I had to learn all of this on my own to diagnose my '99 Explorer. It had all of the symptoms of a bad crank sensor (no spark, no RPM signal, check engine light on while cranking), but the sensor was good. Turned out to be a bad ECM. The ECM basically acted like it wasn't getting a signal from the crank sensor, even though it actually was getting a perfect signal. I bought a used ECM off Ebay, but still had to tow it to the dealer to reprogram the PATS. It was finally fixed after that. But I did pretty much all of the same testing you did first (I wanted to be 110% sure before going through the hassle of towing to the dealer!)

Happy New Year, brother! Been another great year here. Thank you for all you do! I've found the different types of crank sensors are my weak spot. I confuse one for the other, then forget how the other works. Sucks getting old! I need to brush up on all that on your Premium channel. I don't have a Facebook account - I still talk to the people I want to talk to from my past, but the rest, I'd rather leave in the past, if you know what I mean. Hoping I can get out there in May, but the way things go around here, I won't know until we're closer to then. Seems like every single thing I own is now 20 years old and failing all at the same time. Just broke my favorite Snap-On ratchet a few weeks back - got that in '00 when I was at MMI in Phoenix! Had my ancient TV fail, then the flip phone, tire balancer, wifi unit, and of course normal breakdowns on the fleet of vehicles I own (mostly the newest one! The '07 Silverado). I've also had to fix my 20 year old Blue Point multimeter I also got when I first arrived out west in '99. When it rains, it pours, every time. Hopefully things turn around by then, lol! Anyway, enough of me whining about life! God bless you, brother Paul!

I was working on a mercedes ml350 and had a crankshaft sensor code.the sensor is a three wire sensor so i tested each wire and i had 5volt ref, second wire i had another 5volt which i knew is the signal wire which uses a pull down system from what i have learn on ur channel so definitely the last wire is a ground wire.i back probe the signal wire and unplug it and still i had 5volts.base on this teste i knew my integrity of the wiring to the ecm is good so i knew my problem is focus on the crankshaft sensor and signal plate.i wanted to pull the signal wire to ground and listen for some kind of reaction which is the bypass test for pulldown.but i didn't have the courage to do that on an diesel engine since i haven't try it on diesel engine and moreover the car is an expensive car so i was afraid to blow the ecm...i have try it on many petrol cars and it works 100%.Mr scanner i think u are the best teacher i know on the Internet and the best auto diagnostician ever.i have bought ur ebook but i haven't been parts of ur class but the free videos on utube has made impact in my life and people are wondering where i got my skills from.what i have learnt from utube channel is not even taught in our university in Ghana.thanks u very much,u are my God father and my Hero.

Have you ever tried the ditex sensor generator tool. Watch the data pid, induce tool signal into the harness, and watch rpm signal move according to your parameters on the tool. This verifies circuit integrity from sensor to computer and ground wire. Also seeing the data react, we confirm computer processes the signal. You would still need to backprobe the sensor itself to see if the sensor does not produce signal, but the generator eliminates wires and computer immediately 😀

Hi Paul, u instruction series has been an enormous help to me even better has allowed me to better advise and help others. I’d like to suggest some areas where I am looking for better info and training, and not finding much that is structured and educational online, and that u cld consider expanding into. This include explaining operating principles and testing of ADAS systems, more on ATX electronics systems and testing, and finally hybrid and EV systems (the latter is a bit tricky coz of the very different and very real dangers and high voltage risks). Interested in your thoughts Alex

Happy new year Danner, you are a wonderfull person. How much are your lectures usable on diesels and european cars?

I do not work on any diesel systems other than my RV. We just do not have many of them here in the US. As for Euro cars, I do not teach manufacturer specific stuff, I teach universal principles that apply to everything on the road, including much of a diesel system.

Figured I'd mention, you can just put a clamp meter around the CKP wire and watch for milliamps. Super easy. 👍

The tungsten test lamp is not a great tool for finding this fault as it takes too long to cool down and flicker when fault finding a wiring break. An LED one would be better as it will be more perceptible to the eye. What would be ideal for this kind of fault is a votage sensing tool which makes an audio tone when the voltage fluctuates up or down as you move the harness around while fault finding wiring breaks. This would be helpful as you can't always see the DVM or test lamp from the drivers seat if you are checking the voltage at the engine bay fusebox. May be there is a tool out ther that can do this already?

Paul does your book or premium channel cover OBD1 diagnosis at all? I have a great 1997 F250 5.8L FI that is giving trouble. There's not a tech in my town Mobile, AL that I can find to even consider trying to diagnose it including ford dealership.

I feel like you had mentioned in older videos that pcm's don't always monitor/update certain data pids if the engine isn't running. It may have been about attempting to bypass test a map sensor or a maf sensor where the engine wouldn't run, and a bypass test also didn't work because the pcm wasn't monitoring that circuit (even though wire integrity was good.) I'm curious if this car was the same way-without a crank sensor signal, the pcm simply wasn't expecting/even looking for a cam signal - which is why there were no loss of crank signal codes. Perhaps if you unplugged the crank sensor once the engine was running the code would come up. Interesting. Just like you mention-it would be nice if the pcm was smart enough to see a cam signal without a crank signal and scratch its own head and set a code! Happy new years :)

So Paul after you determined it was the sensor do you also teach the trick with a cordless drill with the key chuck to induce the signal. That way you can bench test old vs replacement? Use to start the MB 190E when crank sensor went bad with a drill rpm was all over the place but engine ran. Great teaching the younger guys with that trick.
