Still ev cars are a niche market in India, need 4c charging vehicles and infra. And good spot range, and also in a capital price comparable with ICE. Hybrid, hydrogen, aluminium etc are gimmick as they all are ICE with lower efficiency.

I own a Harrier and Atto 3. I also do lot of highway drives. EVs are not only good for city drives but are good for Highways as well(especially where charging infra is good). One of the frequent drives i take is from Hyd to Palakkad which is around 1000kms. In Harrier it used to take around 17 hours and costs(fuel only) around 10K one way. In the Atto 3 it takes around 20 hours and costs around 5K. That is with fast chargers averaging around Rs21/KwH. Added to that, my harrier has been to service center a minimum of 7-10 times apart from regular services. However, the BYD has been only to service centre at prescribed interval. I have done 60K in total in Harrier in span of 4 years and 20K in Atto 3 in 1 year. If the EV is reliable I can see that becoming a first car for many. The only issue I worry is resale value. What would be their parameters to determine the resale value of an EV.

I was a naysayer on EVs. But after a lot of test driving and consultation with various friends and acquaintances I bought a Hyundai Kona EV - it was on a significant discount. And it is a superb car. I simply consider these as Alternative Fuelled vehicles and use mine accordingly. The cost of running Im seeing, over these last 6 months that I ve owned the EV, is only around 10-15% of the cost of running a petrol vehicle. And the acceleration and handling of my Kona is superb. Being a car made for EU Zone, the build quality is far far above the normal Hyundai vehicles that we Indians are used to.

Problems with Ev- 1. You just can't compare it with ICE vehicles. A 200 km range car is suitable for city drives and weekend nearby getaways. A 300 km range car can do most of what you want from a car. A 400km range like curvv ev will cover almost 98% of your real world usage scenarios. 2. U can't really know what an EV is untill you use one, for say 3-6 months or so. Then you will get to know, you can make it your primary car if real world range is 300km 3. Fast charging infra needs to develop more. I have seen tremendous increase in number of fast chargers within a year. Though now the challenge is that there are too many different apps to use those chargers.
@fireinmyblood
@fireinmyblood Ай бұрын
well said bro, but have u seen the curvv... Its criminally small, and feels exactly like nexon... and for 20-23lakhs is not worth it... the windsor is a better car at 13.5, but with the range of 300(400 is the mark which makes perfect sense to me too)... the app problem is also solved by MG, they have some ehub system, which shows all major charging in 1 app... EVs will take off when roof top solar becomes common. With roof top solar, running cost of EVs becomes nearly zero! Moreover cost of batteries is dropping 30% year on year. So with a deflationary price curve and free electricity with roof top solar, EVs are unbeatable!

New technologies in battery, like sodium batteries crashing the prices and 3. New technologies soon replacing EVs like hydrogen based (perhaps more long term). Any counter thoughts?

Let's say normally you keep a car for 15 years and after which is resale value is almost peanuts so even in case of ev if you use it for 15 years n say it has 0 resale value , but by that time you might have already saved atleast the amount of resale value of ice vehicle. Further to answer your questions about new battery technology , it will atleast take another decade for it to become mainstream, n hydrogen vehicles also it will take atleast 12-13 years to become mainstream. So yeah they come a few years before your 15 years if you buy an ev now so, it shouldn't be much of a concern u can buy a new n more reliable hydrogen vehicle or better battery tech then , n for sodium battery who knows maybe you can fit that battery into your current ev

Great Podcast , an hour well invested. Didn't knew about a v16 . People will buy more evs if 1. No Range anxiety-The day car like a Tata safari charges for 500- 1000 kms in 10 minutes. Which means next Gen battery tech. 2. Govt needs to really invest in charging infrastructure. There should not be 1x but 10x charging points at each charging station that too working with an attendant like a petrol stn. 3. Like C type chargers which are universal in Mobiles , only the fastest of chargers should be mandated by law, also whether a car selling at 10 lakhs or 2 crores should have the same compatibility.There should not be any variation , only fastest DC chargers mandated by law. 4. Real estate developers should be mandated to have at least one charger for 5x flats, else penalized with taxes. For those developers who have projects running incentivise them to develop charging infrastructure by giving special tax waivers on next new project. Having said am a firm believer that Cars are Emotional Purchases , but Evs are lifeless , would never buy a EV despite all its advantages till there is no option left.

Govt needs to really invest in charging infrastructure. PM Edrive scheme will oversee installation of 22500+ fast chargers, there are already 5500+ fast chargers. Personally I don't think govt should get into any business like telecom etc, they should let pvt players handle it as PSUs are lazy and inefficient. Rather give the money to companies like JioBP, Tata power, statiq, chargezone, zeon, etc and see how fast EV infra builds. These brands made 5500+ chargers in last 5y, without govt support, imagine what they can do WITH subsidy > 3. Like C type chargers which are universal in Mobiles , only the fastest of chargers should be mandated by law, That is not an issue, all EVs use CCS2 which is same as cars in europe or africa or america. No variation, all cross compatible. > 4. The fundamental thing about any technology that replaces the existing technology is that it is better in every aspect. for eg: the transistor replacing the tubes, steam engine replaced by internal combustion engines etc etc Now when you look at EV technology, Its not actually better than the outgoing ICE in terms of range, or charging times, passenger comfort due to increased floor height etc… so unless you address these things, don’t expect EV sales to outpace ICE sales… massive RND must be going into battery tech, as that is the single most crucial aspect that address the challenges faced by EV.

> Its not actually better than the outgoing ICE in terms of range, Curvv EV and ZS EV easily get 400km range and their ICE models have similar range 40L x 10kmpl = 400km Further, 99% cars are used inside city and only 1% cars go on highway as per NHAI stats on toll collection > or charging times, You charge EV overnight at home for daily commute, it is in fact saving time as you don't have to go to petrol pump and stand in queue while idling and wasting fuel > passenger comfort due to increased floor height etc… Not an issue in Born EV platforms like BYD atto3 or MG Windsor. In future more Born EV models will also come from tata, mahindra, hyundai, msil etc. > so unless you address these things, don’t expect EV sales to outpace ICE sales It is perception issue also, people equate ev = gay, no charging infra (5500+ fast chargers are there + 99% time you need just home charger)

If you are majorly doing city drive and have a fixed parking where a home charger can be installed, EVs are suitable.. else go for an ICE variant. Unfortunately, no one talks about the quality of the automatic ride, no sound inside the car, less impact on brakes due to regenerative braking, etc. Personally, I am happy that many people are not buying EVs. Else there will be huge queues near charging stations.

Do that with an EV and the battery will get bricked! There's also the simple problem of progressively falling resale values for EVs. The first thing is to remove the wrong promotion numbers 1. Why does company need to introduce test range of 300km while practical range is 230-240km. Every Indian EV buyer knows the test range is of no value and what is value is real world range? Consumer feels EV manufacturer is not honest and transparent 2. Resale value. Indians compare EV resale as Mobile resale after usage of 5 years. Absolutely depreciated and no value unlike ICE engines. 3. Range drop with years. Indians compare mobile battery with Car EV battery. Everyone feels the mobile cannot hold much charge after 4 years and so does an EV car would have far below range after 5 years 4. Battery warranty period is no doubt an assurance period. After the warranty, EV owners need to shell a minimum of 60000 to 90000 which blows the whole saving equation. Hopefully the BaaS of MG solves this 5. There is no fill it, shut it, forget it. Charging a battery is time consuming. For Just In Time and Tactical Life situations EV is not a life saver and infact a burden. Imagine its 10:30PM, a depleted EV battery and you have an emergency situation at home to take an elder to a hospital and you are not confident on 10%-15% charge remaining. Waiting for Ola, Uber or Auto is an inconvenience. Situations demand these tactical /rapid response needs. 6. ECO Friendly ?? Not really when all the smoke is at Thermal Plant generating electricity to charge the battery. Also no EV manufacturer educates consumer on how batteries would be recycled. 7. Beyond all these are viral videos showing battery smoke and explosions Address all these and educate Indians well. Then may be EV is an option

Consumer feels EV manufacturer is not honest and transparent Tata is now giving C75 range number ie 75% owners will hit the given range as per the test. Range and mileage testing is done by ARAI, not brands themselves, so it is ARAI to blame. Anyway, C75 range is tested at 120kmph speed so it should be accurate (is very much accurate in my case of nexon EV) > 2. Resale value. Indians compare EV resale as Mobile resale after usage of 5 years. Absolutely depreciated and no value unlike ICE engines. 3. Range drop with years. Indians compare mobile battery with Car EV battery. Everyone feels the mobile cannot hold much charge after 4 years and so does an EV car would have far below range after 5 years Due to lack of awareness, people think EV battery will last only 3y like mobile so nobody wants it, you are equally guilty in spreading unnecessary misinformation battery life is in cycles, avg car used for 50km per day will take one whole week to consume entire battery ie 1 cycle, LFP is rated for 3000cycles, even if you get half the cycles ie 1500 and 200km range instead of 300km, you can still use same battery for 300K km How many people use same car for 300K km? We have 2 nexon EV which have crosssed 160K km in 4y, one at 187K and another at 201K km. Both people are using original brakes and tyres on their car, still their car gives same range as day 1, no range drop. By the time a driver covers 300K km they have saved almost 15-16L in fuel cost and another 2-3L in servicing cost of vehicle Even if they need to scrap the car or replace battery, they are in net saving > 5. The thing is that when you have even 50% EV penetration, even you office parking (and home parking by default) will have slow charger at least. Drive from home to office and put on slow charge (1kW) then come home put on charge again (3kW) So the situation where you are low on charge is not going to happen in first place. > 6. ECO Friendly ?? Not really when all the smoke is at Thermal Plant generating electricity to charge the battery. QUESTION : IS HYBRID CLEAN OR NOT? EV is just a hybrid with the dirty engine pushed outside the city far from population centre. only 60% energy comes from coal, 40% is renewable, which is even better than hybrid which has like 10% power from electric and 90% from engine. > Also no EV manufacturer educates consumer on how batteries would be recycled. Firstly there is no need to recycle, "reuse" comes before recycle in 3Rs, and you can use EV battery as backup power or in other ICE to EV conversions. Most of tesla model S batteries are used this way only, there is not even a need of having high recycling capacity Also, again you are spreading misinformation, tata has tieup with tata chemicals and MG has tieup with LOHUM and ATTERRO for recycling so pls research before spouting bs in comments > 7. @benkennobi4883. Very good response. I wonder why no automotive channels cover all that you have mentioned. I do not want to promote misinformation but this is what an average consumer / common man thinks. They compare it with their everyday objects and experiences. I wish the EV salesmen are well educated on this topic as they are the last mile influencers. I still wonder why big diesel generators are not replaced in the buildings with powerful batteries to handle power cuts when buses are EV powered. I again guess it’s the response or recovery time to full potential after a use. Electrification is the way no doubt. But would the energy required to mine rare earth metals to make a battery worth it? May be that is the reason EVs are expensive as they need to account all the costs. But I am sure battery tech would improve year upon year. India promotes EV so that oil imports are reduced and we as citizens completely agree with that viewpoint. But using EV requires a certain amount of planning and discipline unlike owning an ICE engine.

For 2 wheelers, where range is not a concern given they are primarily meant for short city commutes, it is just a matter of time for the manufacturers to start rolling out new 2 wheelers, be it scooters or bikes. For 4 wheelers, range is still the primary concern for most of the people who can only afford to keep a single car. Not just that, even charging at home is a concern for many today given many apartments still do not have the wherewithal to charge in the parking space. I was posting from my perspective, where I live in my own home. Windsor with a real world range of 400 km would have been a milestone... even on long trips, say after a 300 km stretch, one could stop for refreshments once ... but if anyone is planning a 1000 km trip or something, why dont u just take a flight and rent a EV @ ur destination... vacation should be fun, not a pointless and endless labor spend on the highways...

If one is buying EV just because running cost is low then be careful unless you have your own home with solar panels installed. EV meters may be feeling cheap as of now but at the end of the day its your electricity board/provider and governments who decide the unit rates and rates always increase. CNG is the best example. Push people to go green and then increase prices comparable to that of petrol and bear the inconvenience of loosing trunk space, long queues, short supply etc. as well.

EV have there batteries installed below the cabin, so boot space is not a issue... new WIndsor is offering 600L boot.. the cost of electricity is true, but wat is the alternate... will the govt reduce price of petrol, its already crossed 100... Plus the transport minister has clearly stated that they want to ban Diesel immediately and petrol later... All Govt buses are being converted to EVs, check out the recently released EV policy... EV is the direction the govt wants, and electricity price can be control by building a dam, solar farm or wind mill... can make a Petrol farm? india is already fedup of the oil imports... the Future is inevitable...

@@fireinmyblood trusting governments too much causes financial blunders for middle class. Same minister clarified that he is not against petrol/diesel. My point is any minister/politician doesn't get stuck due to his EV issue. They have fleet and too many people to take care of them. Government is already increasing electricity prices like crazy even though they themselves declared that 58% of total electricity is coming from renewable sources like solar, wind, hydro etc. So, push governments to come up with comprehensive policy where right everyone including Ministry, manufacturer too are responsible and accountable. At this point of time EVs are sold just by shaming people for air pollution but then same people regularly travel in chartered planes. My simple point is anything beyond 10 lakh is huge amount for a middle class person. So, bring the BEV products, along with infra and uniform standards before pushing people to buy it.

@@fireinmyblood boot space issue was with CNG and comparable issue with EV is actual range and battery charge suddenly dropping issues... Government never brings down prices of the things from where they get direct taxes. As of now more than half of our electricity is coming from renewable sources like solar, wind, hydro etc. Still, do you see any drop in electricity prices? In contrast you will be charged crazily as your electricity usage goes up. Same minister recently said that he is not against peteol/diesel. So, don't put so much trust in government. This same minister was very vocal about hybrid cars. What happened? My point is that both Government and manufacturer should be held accountable if they are handing over half baked products. In case of EVs it's kind of forcing people into buying it. There are hundreds of cases where EV owners were stranded at roadside due to some technical glitch. All these vehicles are almost brand new. Same thing is with charging. Many societies are not allowing EV meters cabling in parking lot and electricity boards are also not willing to give EV meter that easily. So, do not force/shame people to buy EVs. Anything beyond 10 lakh is huge amount for a middle class person. People who promote EVs for environmental reason travel in chartered planes or at least have AC at their home. Let's force governments to promote hybrids including E100 vehicles till this EV mess is standardized.

I wanted to buy an iQube. I do not have fixed two wheeler parking in my society, nor at the office. I ended up buying an Ntorq. Tomorrow if Tata Power manages to install multiple charging stations in my society and somehow manage to link it to my home electricity meter, I would shift in a blink. As an enthusiast, forget about the sound and feel of ICE. I can take my tuned daily on a long drive with no/ minimal planning. And someone with modest income can have a car that can give you a lot of fun. It’s difficult with an EV, you can’t just go on a long trip without planning, you need to keep your speed under check to ensure range. And an ehtusiast ev is not accessible for the regular joe. So to me EVs make little sense. I am in the market for a second car for family, we usually do around 250-300 kms a month with this car. I was excited with the comet ev and Baas but 1500 min kms just made it useless. I might just get a cheap hatchback (used). Easiest decision ever. I own an electric scooter bought purely for experience and I love the running cost but the scooter isn’t for a city run, if I run it on sports mode it looses range like an old iPhone. For Neighbourhood runs it’s perfect.

When the time comes to totally replace the battery.....what is the total cost that the customer has to bear vs the cost of using ICE during the same time period? What is the total cost difference between EV and ICE over a 7/8 year time period.... assuming they are both used the same?
@girishiyer4996

@@main_stream_media_is_a_joke few things, as far as I know you don’t need to replace battery completely after 7/8 years, let’s consider the worst case and assume we will have to replace full battery, it will approximately cost 5-6 lakhs… Considering my use case I cover min 8000 km/year. Cost of ev charging (including fast charging) is ₹3/km, for ICE it’s ₹10/km (I own a Nexon petrol manual, in city it’s less than 10…mileage in highway it’s around 15) I approximately took it as 12km/l… and ₹110/l Fuel cost: EV: 8000*8*3 =1,92,000 Petrol: 8000*8*10=6,40,000 So in 8 years, I will save 4,48,000. Now consider maintenance of ICE, and increasing petrol cost, it will be even more than EV. Note: this is all working out because i m buying it right now when they have 3 lakh discount going on for Nexon.ev, without that discount you would have to drive a lot of extra kilometers for the EV to become valuable

I m considering petrol cost ₹110/l) Total running cost for 8 years: EV: 8000*8*3=1,92,000 Petrol: 8000*8*10=6,40,000 Saving = 4,48,000 EV battery cost: 5-6 lakhs Now consider maintenance and increasing petrol cost, you will benefit from EV. Note: All this calculation is working out because I m buying ev for same price as ICE, if Tata removes 3 lakh discount which they are currently offering, the entire equation changes and ICE will be more beneficial. For Ev to be beneficial you would have to clock a lot of kilometres.

Why so much into screen .... buying ev have multiple positivies as well as negative. As positives its not all about savings, its also about the eco friendly aspect. The increse in temperature day by day to an unbearable mark will lead a concern person to buy an ev no matter waht the cost is. Although there is also a loophole, as still many of the grid powers are caming from non eco friendly power plant( say thermal), so in that case you are not goona help reducing carbon emission even after using an ev. If you are planning to buy an ev only to save money, then buying an ev does not make any sense in terms of savings yet. Math is simple , its not rocket science, average user will drive a car hardly about 20000 km a year, and when you will calculate running cost for that , you will find that considering high upfront cost the evs low running cost does not matter upto 5 years. The 5 years net cost ( car cost +running cost) for ice or ev remains same. Only difference is that for ev you are going to pay high in the name of emi, and for ice (of similar segment) you are going to pay less emi but high running cost( fuel+ maintanance). The BAAS is just a new tactic from the company to attract people to buy ev. Most of the people do not calculate that deep about cost and all, if they feel the car is affordable they will buy. But those who calculate will find that the Baas will cost even higher if we assume one will use it for 5 year period( more than the cost of the car with the battery ). All about the peoples interest, think how much a larger screen cost😂 they goona do the same thing as a small screen. Its a car not a entertainmet cinema hall...😂 . No 2nd car buyer care for all this kind of things, they want the basics right. Ride comfort , powertarin. Its a long way ahed for ev to use it as a primary car, you can not take any ev to a long tour till now. It will take a significant time for develop a proper charging infrastrucutre when you will be able to take your ev and go anywhere you want. As of now any ev as a 2nd car for daily commute is the best choice. And you can feel good for your effort to save nature.

In ICE car, 100% of power is fossil fuel, so directly 40% improvement is there by using EV > If you are planning to buy an ev only to save money, then buying an ev does not make any sense in terms of savings yet. Math is simple , its not rocket science, You say this and then proceed to utterly fail at such simple math Nexon EV = 12.5L Nexon petrol AMT = 12.5L there is zero price gap so there is no money to recover, heck, you will pay more for petrol amt than EV in terms of OTR prices. Even if you compare LR model, it is 16L vs 14L so 2L price gap, running cost delta is ₹6/km ie in 33K km you are net saving which means less than 1.5 years not 5y. > It will take a significant time for develop a proper charging infrastrucutre when you will be able to take your ev and go anywhere you want. there are 5500+ fast chargers even today, and another 22500 built under pm edrive scheme in future, for 99% people, city driving is the main usage of cars, only 1% cars go on highway as per NHAI toll collection stats

Yes, definitely all power plants are not from non renewable source, I just want to mention it if the grid power is from non renewable source. The ex showroom price gap is reduced just few days back, still if you are going to buy the base model of ev then only you will get it in similarly priced high spec model of ice version. I.e. you have to compromise on features. Obviously the future is ev.. but for common people who buy the only car for the first time it is still on the expensive side. People who have money, they do not care anyways, if they want they will buy. This is the problem with auto journalists & automobile media in India. They simply act as YES MEN & promote whatever car manufacturers say. There is no critical evaluation or posing uncomfortable questions to car manufacturers. Look at these two. They're completely Gung ho & all gay, while the industry is going through a massive slowdown
