Sassicaia is one of the most famous Italian red wines sought after by many wine collectors and wine enthusiasts! It is made in Bolgheri, Tuscany and was the first of so-called Super Tuscan wines. In this video I will open and taste Sassicaia 2015 vintage, one of the most highly rated vintages of the last ten years.

I just can't believe that in the early 80's I was serving Sassicaia as a house wine at Donatello's Restaurant in San Francisco. We really liked the wine from the very beginning but it wasn't famous or popular in the city at that time.

Hahah, wow, yeah, great story. Interesting which wines we serve now as a every day wine by the glass that in the future will become an iconic and rare?! 🤔🤔🤔 Cheers! 🥂✨

Price has been skyrocketed for sassicaia, but I can’t lie it has elegance that other tuscan producer don’t have. Tried the 2018 few months ago, what an absolute delight. Though it will be amazing in 7+ years

Look I do like Sassicaia but many the prices are ridiculous. I thought the 2015 vintage tasted great right out of the gate. Two months ago though, I was on a press trip in Slovenia and a Cabernet Franc producer blinded all of us with his Cabernet Franc and a 2018 Sassicaia, we had no idea what either wine was. I said that the wine. (that ended up being Sassicaia) was more friendly but I preferred the other one (which was the Cabernet Franc) a bit more because it was slightly leaner and the tannins had a bit more grip.

I agree with You on prices; they are very high, but nothing really that crazy if compared to Napa Cabernets 😂😅😉 Of course, there are great, more affordable brands in Tuscany, Italy and other lesser known wine producing countries. But Sassicaia is a great brand also, that cannot be substituted with any other wine! 🍷🤷‍♀️

Just came across this video now - very well done, esp the opening sequence. Question: Given the legendary quality and singular renown of Sassicaia over these many decades, why has it not been promoted to DOCG status? Is this perhaps due to an element of residual hostility from the local authorities arising from its maverick origins and/or residual ambivalence to Super Tuscans in general? Or are there other/additional factors involved?
@NoSediment
@NoSediment 3 ай бұрын
In all honesty, I don’t know, I am wouldn’t be sure if they even want it. At this point Sassicaia alone is a much stronger brand and people probably wouldn’t buy it more (or pay more) if it was DOCG. + currently they have a monopole appellation (Bolgheri Sassicaia DOC) ☝️

@No Sediment Unrelated topic... For red wines meant to drink (not age worthy), do you have an estimate of how many years beyond vintage date you should open and enjoy..? I just opened Gnarly Head Old Vine Zin 2016, and it is wonderful... but I'm wondering if I'm pushing it a bit far out..? Thanks Agnese..! 🍷🙂
@NoSediment

I think it has very much to do with each specific wine. Zinfandel as a grape develops high alcohol level (helps in preservation) and some are high in dry extract - also might help. Therefore it is very individual. In general decent made red wines can definitely stay in bottle for average 3-5 years. They might loose some of the fruit freshness, but shouldn’t turn into a vinegar. 👌

That wine is probably the most expensive Cabernet I've tried as well. Yeah if your gonna go all out, go all the way n age it properly. Making sure your getting the best vintages. I wouldn't spend this much, but people do. Its interesting talking to people who buy this wine and others. All the storied about that Bolgeiri coastline or Brunello. Theres a huge wine and culinary experience all packed into that area. Tourist traps too, classic Italy

I think it can be a nice topic to discuss - how much is too much to spend for a wine? And how much doesn’t justify what is invested in the wine. But.. i also know blame us, the wine lovers for these expensive bottles, because it is us, who drive up the prices. 😓

Thanks for the tip! I had the opposite experience. I can't remember which year I got but given the price (around 180GBP) I expected to be disappointed, instead I was pretty much blown away. Sure, I'd had a few good Brunellos but nothing approaching that price point, so maybe I just wasn't used to higher tier wines?

I see you just dropped in from Italy to show us new wine. I must have retarded tastebuds because I've never found wine acidity to be mouth watering.
@NoSediment
@NoSediment Жыл бұрын
Acidity is mouth watering, and Your taste buds are not retarded. 😉 It happens because of pH, the lower the pH the more saliva will gather in Your mouth, its aim is to normalise the pH level again. This is the reason why sometimes, only from lemon aroma 🍋 alone our mouth fills with saliva. Its preparing, it knows what is coming. 😂😂😂 So when I say mouthwatering acidity, what I mean, is that it is high. 🤓 Cheers! 🍾🥂
